Two weeks of contests in Paris
Of every conceivable style
Athletes honed like hardened steel
Ladecky, Tebogo, Yee, Li, Biles
What focus and determination
To swim, box, dive, run, throw
Pushing their mental endurance
And how far their bodies can go
They remind me of what John Kruk
Once told a hotel lobby hater:
"Lady, I ain't an athlete--
I'm a baseball player."

Do you think Babe Ruth could beat Joey Chestnut in a hot dog eating contest when he was in his prime?
Yes
Oh, yeah.
Lovely poetics, Ike.
The truly unforgivable part of Holmes' performance yesterday, if I may chime in so belatedly, was walking Wyatt Langford with two out and a two-run lead.
Langford is a rookie with all of 6 home runs in 380 PA this season, and a .243 BA. You HAVE to challenge that guy in that situation. There is no reason NOT to throw him a strike on every pitch, save maybe 0-2 or 1-2. Gotta go after him.
The fact that Holmes did not reflects badly not only on him, but also Boone and whoever the pitching coach is. But we've said that before.
