Spring is coming, so esteemed Yankee great Goose "Rich" Gossage is shooting from the lip again. This time, he's taking a shot at the team's great GM, C-Money himself.
"With
power ... you turn into a f--king a--hole. Is that it?"
"If he
had any balls, he'd do what he wants to do," Gossage said of
Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman. "He doesn't think he needs any
baseball people around. Maybe he's right. The way the game is being run today,
maybe you don't."
"He
would've been gone 10 years ago if George was still around," Gossage said.
"He'd have been gone when he jumped out of that f--king airplane. Do you
think he’s a good f--king baseball guy, really? He doesn’t believe in f--king
coaching."
In 2017, Gossage ripped legendary Yankees closer Mariano
Rivera and their current closer, Aroldis
Chapman, for being one-inning pitchers, in
an interview with NJ Advance Media's Randy Miller.
"It's totally different, so
don't even compare me here," Gossage said. "Chapman's great. [Rivera]
was great ... for one inning."
We love the
Goose and don't completely disagree with him but it is what it is, as a wise
man once said. And Cash is king.

One of the best tag lists of all time. Some of us lie in the weeds and notice these things, Duque.
I can never hate Goose, just as I can never really love Cash. His criticism of Mariano, though, has never been rational. I know he has a lot invested in that ornery persona, but come one....Mo is Mo. Don't be a dildo, Goose.
I agree, 13bit.
I love the Goose. I met him a couple times, and he was very nice. I once saw him give a perfectly intelligible interview while simultaneously shelling huge handfuls of sunflower seed with his teeth and spitting out the shells. He should have taken that act on the stage.
But he's got to get that chip off his shoulder.
Unlike older Old Timers, the Goose got rich, and he made the Hall. Cashman might not believe in coaching, but I saw Gossage "coaching" the Yanks in spring training—which seemed to consist of retrieving baseballs and giving interviews.
As for Mariano, well, that dog won't hunt.
If you listen to Goose, you'll hear that his pretty much every save consisted of coming in with the bases loaded and nobody out, and striking out the side. I actually looked this up. He did it exactly once.
Goose saved a lot of games—and he blew a lot of games, 85 career relief losses and 112 blown saves, largely because he was put in for too long, and with too little rest.
And then there was his constant stubborn streak, which made him challenge George Brett time and time again...
It's not Goose's fault that he wasn't used well, just as it isn't Mo's that he was used more carefully. But he ought to stop with all the chest-beating about how he was the Humongous of relief pitchers. Nobody thought he was even the best of his time.
Might tell Gossage:
-- Moses didn't use indoor bathrooms. Pooped under the stars.
-- Ditto Jesus.
Sometimes change might be embraced......
Gossage was an entertaining force of nature stomping around on the mound and firing away, but he also supplanted the reigning Cy Young champion and all-time Yankee character, Sparky Lyle. The acquisition of Gossage was a harbinger of what was to come in the awful '80s, when Steinbrenner was a perennial contender for title of Biggest Asshole in Public Life in America and worst owner of an iconic sports franchise.
I don't know what's wrong with Gossage. Maybe he thinks the world has gone soft and needs to know how it was when men were men, and he walked to school in the snow barefoot and uphill both directions.
It would have been real easy for Cashman to laugh this off, be the bigger man. Gossage is a buffoon. Instead, we have another episode of Stupid Rich Men with Petty Grievances.
THE GOLDEN GOOSE SOUNDS LIKE HE IS DRUNK WHEN HE MAKES THESE COMMENTS.
.....BUT, I STILL HAVE GRATITUDE TOWARDS HIM AND KIND OF AGREE WITH HIS STANCE ON COOPERSTOWN CASHMAN.
LAY OFF MARIANO THOUGH, HE IS THE TRUE KING.
13 BIT AND HOSS ARE RIGHT ON AS USUAL.
Goose, remember your much heralded first appearance as a Yankee? Gave up the game-winner to Richie Zisk.
