Of course, the sport is soccer. Forget baseball. The Yankees have not been bringing home any cups, belts, trophies, flasks, jugs, commemorative boots or cowbells.
"Since NYCFC’s founding, we have been extremely proud partners with City Football Group, which truly sets the standard in world football."
Basically, the Yankees rent out their stadium, a reminder that - despite all the public money that went into building Yankee Stadium - Hal owns it.
"We especially offer our heartfelt congratulations to City Football Group’s dedicated leadership team, including Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, CEO Ferran Soriano and Board Member Marty Edelman, who is also Vice Chairman of NYCFC, as well as all of the NYCFC staff members who contributed to this incredible group effort."
Hal congratulates the owners, his fellow billionaires, and mentions not one player.
"As an NYCFC Board Member, I want to recognize my colleagues on the board for the roles they played in this tremendous accomplishment."
Basically, he's applauding himself. Who'll ever forget the great plays those board members made in securing the Cup! It'd be like him congratulating Randy Levine and Rudy Giuliani for a Yankee world championship - (if, course, we ever win one again.)

That is literally like claiming, "The FCL Yankees truly set the standard in professional baseball."
@Hoss...the standard? Not right now...but...USA soccer is ranked 12th in the world with a core of very good young players...as the years progress, and more US players participate in MSL, a team like NYCFC could be competitive will some of the better teams in the world in the future. They just need a real soccer stadium...and it will probably end up near Shitti Field.
I promise you Hal doesn't even know how many players are on a side, much less know any individual's name. But buttering the asses of fellow billionaires is just good fun.
ranger, haven't you read about Dear Leader's plans for "Soccer City" in the Bronx? A great big, 20-25,000 or so seat stadium, to be surrounded by luxury apartment buildings.
That's how the MLS owners see soccer—mostly as a real estate opportunity.
Sure, on paper it makes sense, in a way, to build soccer slowly as opposed to the NASL model. But just how slowly will it be? And will it ever come off?
Unlike pretty much every other country in the world, the US has teams and leagues in four, high-paying, better watched sports. Everyone plays soccer in the US on a youth level. But by the time they're a little older they're playing these other sports because they have a chance to make it big. Hard to picture when that will be the case in soccer.
