So many pitchers, so few choices

There are 12 fucking pitchers on our ALCS roster. 12. And the bullpen is threadbare.

You get past Weaver and Kahnle and Hill is the only serviceable arm out there. Maybe we need to call on Stroman. Somebody has to give our Big Two some rest. They can't come in again today and also tomorrow.

We have slack and nobody there to pick it up.

Cashman, as usual, did nothing for the bullpen at the trading deadline. Every guy he picked up off various scrap heaps or scrap teams is gone. (Hill being the only somewhat pleasant surprise, so you know how bad the rest of them were.)

Maybe we should have hung on to Caleb Ferguson. Or dug up Maynard Ferguson. Or given Marinaccio more of a chance instead of putting him on waivers. Or...or...something. Anything.

Boone is an idiot, yes, no question. But who the hell is there to bring in when he needs to quell the opposition? No-fucking-body.

I would love to see Gil put in one of his great seven-inning games tonight, but I doubt it. If we need middle relief, it's got to be Stroman. Weaver's arm is going to fall off.

Which means that, basically, we don't have a great chance at going up 3-1 tonight. A far greater chance at ending up 2-2.

But if Boone can just give Weaver and Kahnle a break so they can pitch effectively tomorrow before the day off Sunday, I'll frustratedly take 2-2 with three left. If those guys spend tonight in the jacuzzi, we have a much better chance of winning tomorrow and Monday.

Fucking Cashman. The incompetent, arrogant, shitheaded asshole.

What I fear most is Komodo dragons...sorry! What I fear most is the Yanks falling behind early and then quitting. For in addition to their general incompetence, these Yankees are also largely devoid of character. Get them down 3-0 or so, even against this moax who Cleveland is starting, and they will stay down, losing 11-3 or some such. And repeat tomorrow.

13bit said...

What do you guys expect, competence? Baseball smarts? You're asking for the moon. Hal was just crying on my shoulder and he wants you all to know that he does EVERYTHING FOR US and yet we still don't appreciate him. We must be assholes.

BTR999 said...

Totally agree. They’ve played that way all year long. Gil will be lucky to last 4, then Stroman will come in and it’ll be 6-1 by the sixth, and you can guess the rest.

BTR999 said...

It would be nice to win one game 8-2, and not have to worry about the 8th and ninth. Really missing Cortes here.

ranger_lp said...

It's more Ca$hman than Boone. They are using all sorts of anal-ytics to decide who's on the roster. If you remember, they overhauled the anal-ytics department...personally, I haven't seen any improvement, but, I can't see their data either...

I would IMMEDIATELY wash those tears off your shoulder and head over to whatever medical clinic is open and nearby you to have a deep fascia skin peel followed up by an emergency skin graft. Best to trust no one at this point and have the doctors use skin from your ass instead of trusting cadaver tissue.

You don't have much time....

Kevin said...

Hate to say it, but this team reflects the character that Boone seems to project. Nice, but no meanness, no spine. I'm sure that Boone the man isn't spineless, but as a manager....

Kevin said...

Very interesting read in "The Athletic" concerning the White Sox. Starting with the fanboy owner.

mik said...

"Cast whatever light you will." However you look at it this team is just over .500 since early summer. I don't expect much more than that now. That does not mean that they can not win but this team is no powerhouse.

Hey Gang, great news! Mark Leiter, Jr. has been added to the post season roster!!!!!! How exciting. I feel better about our chances already.

Now if we can only get Cashman to add his favorite prospect, Will Warren, to the roster, we can enjoy a lovely dumpster fire where the 28th WS Trophy should be.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Meanwhile, the mutts are trying to lose via pineapple insertion.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

Is Javier Vazquez available?

JM said...

Mets hanging onto the lead.

Hoss, my favorite Bob and Ray routine is the Komodo dragon but. Always find it brilliantly funny.

Leiter Fluid. Oh, yeah, that helps.

JM said...

We still have Brubaker, don't we? What the hell.

13bit said...

"Fucking Cashman. The incompetent, arrogant, shitheaded asshole."
JM - your eloquence soars like the flight of a thousand sparrows.

13bit said...

AA - I have no skin to lose on my ass, despite the fat underneath. It's all been scraped away by life. Instead, I had my unused testicles, so they just used the scrotum and it's a nice little repair job. Now, when someone puts their hand on my shoulder, they really cupping my balls.

Doug K. said...

Mets up 8-1 in the 3rd

JM said...

Thank you, Bit. That means a lot.

Mets and Dodgers keep the back and forth going. Dodgers destroy the Mets in first game. Mets take LA to the woodshed in second. Dodgers obliterate them, third game. And today, Mets kicking their butts.

Weirdest set of lopsided playoff games I've ever seen.

JM said...

I missed a game there, but you know what I mean.

HoraceClarke66 said...

I start laughing when I merely hear the words, "Bob & Ray," JM.

Also, love "Leiter Fluid."

I think all the lopsided scores mean two teams whose pitching staffs are basically shot, keep wanting to hold guys back for when they have a chance to win—another problem with overlong playoff system.

We'd probably have seen several one-sided games in the ALCS, too, but both teams' hitters are so incompetent (not to mention their base running).

JM said...

Drunks.

JM said...

LA has cut the lead to 5. Only the fifth.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

I have very good flashbacks to Bob and Ray on snl. Saying they didn't really like disco and preferred the acid rock of the 60's like the dead and the airplane.

Then they went into rod Stewart "do you think I'm sexy" with Gilda, Jane and Lorraine as the ronettes in glitter.

Still gives me chuckles.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

...and the MAD magazine parodies

Rufus T. Firefly said...

They're rapidly devolving into a Yankees/Red sucks game.

"Are we not men?"

Joe of AZ said...

Damn....do the Mets and dodgers NOT have pitching ... They making Yankee starters look like the best group among the remaining teams

mik said...

Let's do it!

mik said...

SOOOOOOOOOOOTOOOOOOOOO!!!!! JUANDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pocono Steve said...

So long as we score in every goddam inning, we should be fine. That's easy, right? Happens all the time, right?

mik said...

Yup, all the time. HA HA

mik said...

All's Wells that ends well!

Hinkey Haines said...

Wells done!

AboveAverage said...

Alls Wells in Austin

Pocono Steve said...

Gee, I miss Trevino.

TheWinWarblist said...

WELLS!! BREAK IT DOWN!!

JM said...

Nice to see.

JM said...

Finally moved him down in the order and boom.

mik said...

Verdugo does play an excellent left field.

Joe of AZ said...

Cle already going to the pen...interesting

TheWinWarblist said...

Gil needs to throw strikes.

Hinkey Haines said...

All Kwan does is hit the ball through between second & third. All the Yankees do is position Volpe up the middle. I wonder what would happen if Volpe was playing, you know, shortstop?

Joe of AZ said...

Its obvious Gil has not pitched in awhile

TheWinWarblist said...

Gil's velocity is okay but his location is all over the place.

mik said...

Modern ball does not look logical - just analytical. Drive me nuts

JM said...

Gil blocked Wells' throw so he had to double pump. Cripes.

TheWinWarblist said...

The umpire may be more drunk than I am.

JM said...

That was completely avoidable.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

That may be clinically impossible.

TheWinWarblist said...

Fat guy base hit there.

mik said...

@Hinke Haines - if Volpe had been playing in the true short-stop hole that run would never have happened. Good call.

Joe of AZ said...

Blake why dont you go fuckin talk to your rookie...ffs

TheWinWarblist said...

Rufus? Perhaps.

Kevin said...

Gil needed to come out with control. He hasn't, Boonie will be going to the bullpen real soon...

Joe of AZ said...

That was NOT a checked swing ass Ump

mik said...

Nope.

Pocono Steve said...

You get the feeling that Gil is about to allow something horrible

JM said...

Gil often has control problems, but this looks bad. Rusty.

Pocono Steve said...

Or not. Next inning he should be great!

JM said...

No way.

Pocono Steve said...

And so long as we score every inning, we should be golden!

AboveAverage said...

Needs to come out for at least one more inning

Kevin said...

Gil, 70 pitches in three innings. Not what you'd want...

JM said...

Looks terrible for three or four pitches, then he's Nolan Ryan.

TheWinWarblist said...

SWING AND A MISS!!! GRAB SOME BENCH, YOU BIG CHEESEBURGER!!

Kevin said...

At least.... But hey! We have Leiter now!

Hinkey Haines said...

I think that’s it for Gil. Will it be Stroman?

AboveAverage said...

Judge’s brain is on the IL

Hinkey Haines said...

Chisholm needs a day off.

TheWinWarblist said...

Jazz could shut the fuck up and have a 3 hit game and score a few runs.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

TWO TJ surgery's? How did the Yankee crackhead ANALytical team miss this guy?!?!?!?

TheWinWarblist said...

Stealin' Stanton can't run, but he still has sick bat speed.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

I know that NO ONE expects the spanish inquisition, but how can you not expect a fastball down the middle?!!

AboveAverage said...

Everyone needs to calm down and accept that we will lose. Peace and happiness (plus a little drool and piddle so be prepared) awaits all the do.

Hinkey Haines said...

Rufus, he wanted to get back to the comfy chair.

Hinkey Haines said...

That bunt was a gift out…

Hinkey Haines said...

Excellent inning.

JM said...

Good inning for Gil. Hope Boonebrain lets him go one more. Please, no Mayza.

Kevin said...

Esteemed commentators, do you send Gil out for the fifth inning?

JM said...

Yes!!

Kevin said...

Agree!

Kevin said...

But I have the feeling that Boone doesn't have the stones...

TheWinWarblist said...

We got ourselves a bullpen game here. I need a bucket of fried chicken.

TheWinWarblist said...

Boone will always fuck up a game by trying to steal an extra out of two from a spent pitcher

Hinkey Haines said...

Gold Glover out there…

JM said...

Fine play by Soto. Like a Gold Glover.

JM said...

Yessir.

mik said...

Holy cow! Small ball...

JM said...

Jazz can bunt.

Hinkey Haines said...

Good choice, given how he’s been hitting.

JM said...

Stanton!!!!!!!

Pocono Steve said...

Stantonian small ball!

Hinkey Haines said...

HELL YES!!!

ranger_lp said...

Stanton!!!

mik said...

That was not small ball!!!! What a shot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TheWinWarblist said...

Man of Glass!!

TheWinWarblist said...

The Hardest Part https://g.co/kgs/A5yUJEX

Hinkey Haines said...

Need 12 outs. So another half-dozen runs would be helpful.

Rufus T. Firefly said...

When does he pull a muscle?

Askin' fer a fren'

BernBabyBern said...

I'm still wondering who this #27 guy playing for us. You know, the guy with Stanton's old number.

Hinkey Haines said...

He swings! He hits!

mik said...

Sure would.

AboveAverage said...

We need one more run to weeen

JM said...

Ballpark got awfully quiet.

Hinkey Haines said...

Another nice inning from the pen.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Yeah, 6 more runs should do it.

TheWinWarblist said...

Maybe 8.

13bit said...

Let me just say THIS to the JuJu gods - we are definitely going to win this game. Put THAT in your pipes and smoke it. Muhahahahahahaha.....

TheWinWarblist said...

A four run lead is not safe.

Pocono Steve said...

Torres is slower than a very slow thing.

Bitty!? NO!?

Hinkey Haines said...

Ugh.

mik said...

John Sterling sounds so PISSED when pitchers throw balls. Why walk the leadoff hitter?? Make him hit his way on.

Doug K. said...

Kwan is a really good hitter

JM said...

Bring in Stroman.

Doug K. said...

Holmes

Hinkey Haines said...

Great. Holmes coming in with runners on base. That always works out.

TheWinWarblist said...

Aroldis Holmes. Great. Genius. Bet they never saw that coming.

Doug K. said...

Holmes with men on. The stupidest way to use him

TheWinWarblist said...

At least Holmes can't give up a 5 run home run. He can't. Right!?

mik said...

Big K! Now, how about a double-play to end the 7th?

TheWinWarblist said...

That was a good pitch.

TheWinWarblist said...

mik, I'm not sure you've internalised the IIH IIF ethos.

JM said...

Fuck.

ranger_lp said...

Not feeling good about the lead…

mik said...

Probably not.

JM said...

Me neither.

Hinkey Haines said...

What lead? It’s as good as gone.

Doug K. said...

Boone is so so so stupid

TheWinWarblist said...

See??

JM said...

Mayza and Leiter warming up fast.

Doug K. said...

Here comes the 3 run home run. Oh G-d Lieter is warming up.

ranger_lp said...

Feeling worse that Leiter is in the bullpen…

JM said...

Holmes. Boone. Shit.

Hinkey Haines said...

Holmes sucks.

BernBabyBern said...

Wisdom from The Master: "It always begins with a walk."

I'm getting a kick out of listening to Sterling while watching the TV broadcast. The Master sounds like he's having a lot of fun. ... Screw this retirement thing. Have him do like 10 games a year. That way it's not a chore and it's not too much for an 80-whatever-year-old guy, but he still gets a chance to do his thing.

Pocono Steve said...

How many programmed losses can we afford in the playoffs? ( Asking for me.)

TheWinWarblist said...

Why the fuck is Holmes still in there?

JM said...

Remember, Leiter has strikeout stuff.

Cough.

TheWinWarblist said...

That's it. I'm exhausted and ready for Lieter to break my heart.

Hinkey Haines said...

YOU DON’T BRING HOLMES IN WITH RUNNERS ON. EVER. Boone is an idiot.

TheWinWarblist said...

I said we needed 8 more runs.

Doug K. said...

Winnie - because he's better than leiter much the same way that a shit sandwich is better than a shit sub.

JM said...

He's 85 or 86. That's getting up there. But if he can do it, that's a good idea.

Doug K. said...

this X10,000,000

BernBabyBern said...

Man, I miss the days of Stanton-to-Nelson-to-Rivera

JM said...

Omg. Heart attack.

mik said...

We all do.

Doug K. said...

it is high, it is far, it is caught

Kevin said...

Thought that it was absolutely OUT!!!!!!!

JM said...

Strikeout stuff.

ranger_lp said...

Got out of the inning…barely…

Kevin said...

Whewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

JM said...

I did, too. Was sure of it.

Doug K. said...

It's only the seventh

Hinkey Haines said...

I have no idea how they’re going to get 6 more outs without giving up any runs. No bloody idea.

BernBabyBern said...

Cool, we got out of it while still holding the lead.

Now, we only need to get through two more innings, and we can hand it over to ....

to ....

uhhh .... well ....

We are so fucked.

TheWinWarblist said...

Top of the 8th. They blow the game now or bottom of the 9th??

TheWinWarblist said...

Jazz is pathetic at the plate.

BTR999 said...

Bottom of ninth of course.

BTR999 said...

Awful hitting by Judge/Stanton/Chisolm in the 8th. Especially Chisolm, who should be benched.

Hinkey Haines said...

Chisholm looks like Soriano did in the 2003 World Serries. He might as well be blindfolded up there.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Jazz is an awful ballplayer, and another terrible Cashman acquisition.

BTR999 said...

The beginning of the end.

HoraceClarke66 said...

WHY IS HE LEAVING LEITER IN???

HoraceClarke66 said...

NO, NO, NO! HE CAN PULL HIM AFTER THE LEADOFF DOUBLE! WTF IS WRONG WITH HIM?

HoraceClarke66 said...

HOLY SHIT! LEITER NEARLY GAVE IT UP LAST INNING!

Pocono Steve said...

It's a throwaway game. ALCS is a marathon, not a sprint.

ranger_lp said...

FFS…

TheWinWarblist said...

Bottom of the 8th and the best we have to send out there is Lieter.

Kevin said...

WTF??????????????????????????????????????????????

ranger_lp said...

We’re losing this one…

mik said...

This is embarrassing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TheWinWarblist said...

Of course.

TheWinWarblist said...

Pathetic.

Hinkey Haines said...

Losers. That’s what they are. Losers.

TheWinWarblist said...

Keefe is going to be inflamed.

DickAllen said...

The Williamsport Yankees

TheWinWarblist said...

Boone is The Moron.

JM said...

Our lack of an actual bullpen has caught up to us.

Kevin said...

This is proof that we are living in a simulation. NFW can this be happening.

ranger_lp said...

Rizzo doing his best Bill Buckner impression…

JM said...

Was thinking the same. Wow.

DickAllen said...

I’M INFLAMED!!!

Hinkey Haines said...

Leiter panicked. Rizzo choked. That’s all there is to it.

HoraceClarke66 said...

This is almost all on Cashman...but Boone is a fucking idiot.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Yeah, it's mostly on Cashman...

Publius said...

Rizzo should not be playing. I dont care about his hit(s). His appaling D has been the Yankees downfall the last two nights.

JM said...

The Tonys give us hope.

HoraceClarke66 said...

But why is the broken-fingered 1B still out there? WTF does Boone have against Cabrera? He can't start over Jazz, who is a joke, he can't come in at first for Rizzo. Why is he on the roster?

ranger_lp said...

Wouldn’t Cabrera be the third catcher?

ranger_lp said...

What a break…

JM said...

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

AboveAverage said...

And there’s the run we needed

Hinkey Haines said...

Finally, a squibber that helps.

JM said...

Listening to this announcer, I thought Rocchio was in the Hall of Fame already.

TheWinWarblist said...

We need to score 7 more runs.

ranger_lp said...

Blasé is a mere mortal…

Publius said...

They need 5 more runs. At least.
