Last night's big Yankee win - (Note: Every Yankee win is a big Yankee win) - roused several key narratives about a prodigal son, returning home.
1. Newly bearded Jonathan Loaisiga - back after throwing only four innings in all of 2024 - pitched a scoreless sixth.
Bleacher Creatures, turning backs upon somebody's arrival. |
2. Routinely bearded Devin Williams - the closer from Milwaukee, who's been a bust - pitched a dominant 1-2-3 inning, fanning the side.
3. Um... wait... damn... There was somebody else... back from a falling out? Jorbit Vivas? From Scranton? Cody Bellinger? He's now at .242. There was somebody... did I dream it? Cannot recall...
Oh, well...Check out that lineup. Nine blocks of granite, I tell ya! Still, I can't shake the feeling that somebody's missing...
Not Trent Grisham? He's having a moment. Aaron Judge? Simply the greatest player in the game. Every time I see Bellinger's numbers, they improve. Paul Goldschmidt is the AL Comeback Player of the Year. And let's hold faith in Jasson Dominguez, Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells. They've lived multiple lifetimes since the season started. Still... somebody from last year is missing from that lineup...
Wait? I got it? Ben Rice! Where was he last night? Will we see him today? (Game time: 1:05 Eastern.) Last I looked, Rice has never pissed on the Yankee fan base. I'm thinking of somebody else, but cannot summon the name.
Sorry, but there are several cool story lines bouncing around the Yankee clubhouse, and none involve a player who once wore the jersey and took it off. The Yankees won last night, and the bleacher creatures turned their backs.
Someday, maybe they won't have to bother. There's nothing to see, nobody to boo, nada to bother with. Wait... I GOT IT! D.J. LEMAHIEU! Where was he?

Well, he needed a day of rest after that grueling (checks notes) one and a half day stretch followed by a travel day.
He's old, Rufus. He needs his rest.
Game is at 7 pm for me, I can watch this one. Thanks, Carl!
Carl is King with that thing a thing thing.
Can Rice play 3rd? That’s the position of need.
An under the radar name at SWB is Jesus Rodríguez. Normally a C, he’s seems to be getting a tryout at 3rd. Batting an eye-popping .385 in 109 PA in Scranton.
You changed your avatar, I see.
.385 ain't hay.
How’s Lois and Jimmy?

A mighty joyful list, Ranger
The fans turning their back on Soto was pretty close to perfect as a response. Soto loves being the center of attention.
C'mon, man. Third base takes special attributes. it is mostly a reflex spot that requires a strong and accurate arm. You don't just stick people over there. Usually ( like me ) they are born with these skills, and always play there. Just like the great first basemen are born to[lay there. And they are lefties. (Often)
I can't get excited about hating Soto. As a Yankee, I enjoyed the way he sparked up the offense and gave the team the one-two punch it needed (and still does). But off season was his big payday. I can't begrudge that.
The Yankee front office are a bunch of entitled schmucks. The detail they balked over (luxury seats for his family) was chump change. But after the Yankees messed with his parents, a deal-breaker. Trost, Levine and Hal, just couldn't accept a Latino ballplayer as their equal. I'll bet their country clubs have similar rules.
I might have made the same decision. That inbred entitlement grinds on my last nerve - always and forever - and I would delight in kicking those clowns to the curb, if I were in his shoes.
But he's not a Yankee anymore, so I enjoyed seeing Weaver get him for the last out. But when the game is over, leave the outcome on the field. The Yankee leadership is loyal to nobody but themselves and treats everyone else like shit. I can't blame him for seeing that and kicking them to the curb.
