Congrats to Boone and his zany cast of Goodfellas, Sopranos, McHale's Navy the '25 Yankees. We still don't know how this show will end. (Who figured last year's climactic fiasco?) But as we stumble toward the last-ever world series with umps who pee, the Yanks at least have a seat at the table. In July, they looked like experimental mice on one of Musk's rocket test disasters. Now, it's Houston who wears the albatross, (though Detroit may steal it.)
Either way, we get to watch Gleyber or Lil Jose get Septembered. (I speak for the Yankiverse: Let it be the midget.)
Okay, as promised, 10 takeaways from last night...
1. The postgame pollen party coaxed Boone to say the unthinkable: He used the s-word. Via the IT IS HIGH language sanitizer, Boone spake, "Don't take that poop for granted." How dare he! I can only imagine what horrible words escape his potty mouth when he's peed-off at a home ump. (Something he won't sweat next year.)
2. Kudos to the ninth inning comeback. But honestly, this felt more like a Whitesock giveaway than Yankee heroism. With the tying run on third, the Chisocks pitcher flings a hail Mary pass out of the endzone, (a la the Jersey Giants' Russell Wilson.) Jose Caballero came through, but it was the Socks who blew that game.
3. Anthony Volpe is hot - well, actually, warm - and, apparently, on track to start in the postseason. By my calculation, it will happen right around the time his cortisone shot wears off. Not whining. Just sayin'.
4. Last night's win must have clanked in both Toronto's and Boston's locker rooms. I imagine them watching, cheering each Yankee out, as the end approached. Instead of showing the Yankees celebrate, YES should have gone live from the Redsocks clubhouse. Now, that would have been fun.
5. A month ago, last night's loss might have broken the Whitesocks, maybe launched a losing streak. But you can't break what's broke. Chicago is a bunch of young players looking to impress for next year. Over the next two nights, they won't phone it in.
6. The Million Met March is once again viable. Damn. Last night, Mr. Mercenary went 1-4 with a walk. Wouldn't a season-ending slump be wonderful?7. Won't happen. Fortunately, for the Mets, the Cubs have clinched a wild card and have nothing to lose (though they have to worry more about the Mets than the D-backs or Reds.)
7. Luis Gil pitched well enough to probably secure the third - and potentially season-defining - slot in the rotation. But I don't like hearing that his fastball has dropped from 98 mph last year to 92. In the early innings, Gil dances in and out of trouble. I don't look forward to that, especially if the season is on the line.
8. As disturbing as it sounds, from an end-of-times perspective, I favor using robo-umps behind home plate. There's something about a blown call: When the ump calls a wrongful strike on Jazz Chisholm, you can see all his positive energy sink into the void. The lone downside: I believe robo-umps will help HR-dependent, one-true-outcome batters. In my opinion, the greatest threat to the game is too many strikeouts and walks, and hitters who swing for the fences.
9. Tonight, Rodon. Who would ever thought he might become a fan favorite?
10. Damn, I shouldn't have said 10. I got nothing.

I’d rather play against Houston than Detroit come playoffs. No need to see Skubal
Skeeball over Skubal. Let us not forget the mighty Guardians. They're hot, sure, but we might still be able to take them.
Go Mets. *cough*
Did I miss the pennant race? And "Septembered" rhymes with "dismembered." Just saying...
Right on, O Peerless One. Though I gotta say, if they ever make a case for players throwing games already, the highlights from last night will be Exhibit One. Not just the crazy wild pitch out of nowhere but that less than determined effort by their centerfielder.
Sure, why should he go all out for a team whose season ended long ago, and risk injury. On the other hand, that was pathetic.
Oh, well, we'll take it. Stranger things have happened—usually to us, and involving Alex Verdugo.
Actually, I don't hate the Mets. I was glad they won last night, and still have dreams of seeing a Subway Series. Not gonna happen, but it could be fun...
Last night’s win was fun, but as Hoss commented somewhat bogus. In the playoffs, you can’t count on a wild pitch or a dubious effort by the oppo CF. He didn’t even TRY to lay out and dive for that ball with the game on the line, then uncorked a thousand hop throw that would make Johnny Damon blush. There’s a reason why some teams only win 50 games a year.
Yeah, if I were the Sox manager, I'd bench that CF for the rest of the year. The guy was only 2 feet away from the ball. He likely would have made the catch had he stretched or, at worst, made a slight dive. Pathetic attempt!
10) Thankfully, Ben Rice didn't get blitzed enough to slip on the shower floor and bash his head on the tiled walls.
Or distemper
I don't know what to make of Luis Gil right now.
He was solid enough last night against the league's worst lineup. He's allowed 2 or fewer runs in 8 of 10 starts.
But under the hood, there are a lot of scary things happening. His velocity is down, his strikeouts are down, somehow he's walking more batters than last year, he's not keeping the ball on the ground, he's not getting batters to chase off the plate, etc. It feels like he's very lucky to have an ERA in the 3s.
Takeaway #10 on every list from here on out should be: "Brian was right about everything."
I agree. Gil looks like October fodder. Naturally Boone will start him in game 3.
My take, why is Cabelleo not in the Yankees lineup tonight? Really! I would lead him off in all remaining games leading into the playoffs, He adds a new dimension and has been hot. Ed McMahon does not make enough contact to groundoyt or popout.
Boone rule 3.14. -- always rest the hot hand. Makes them fresher in the long run. Like October golf.
Imagine if the Yankees handled injuries with any kind of competency perhaps Volpe could have avoid the summer of hades as his production numbers other than B.A aren't that bad
Lots of errors, though, Joe.
Jazz has a lot of errors, as well.
Scranton's looking to take the Governors' Cup tonight. Last night, JC Escarra hit an rbi double in the 10th, and de Los Santos, Headrick and Hamilton pitched spotless relief (a couple lesser arms were shaky and gave up a lead in the 9th). Other highlight was blog favorite Rummy, who hit a three run homer of Jacksonville's nasty, but young, lefty.
