Is it a year when we vanquish our greatest foe? Or fail miserably?
It seemed brutally simple: A three-game, make-or-break series.
All else has been prelude.
Suddenly, that outcome looks as foggy as the eastern horizon. With a new "storm of the century" approaching, lo and behold! the Redsocks could still blow this.
Suddenly, Boston needs to beat the Cubs this weekend in a doomsday tempest that has already blown up the schedule. (They'll play two today.) If they blow it, Boston could drop in the wild card standings, leaving the Yankees to play the Cleveland Indians Commanders Browns Cavaliers Guardians, whatever.
As the Yankees/Railrideers phone in their final three against Baltimore, this could be unexpectedly fun to watch. Why?
Well, if there's anything more enjoyable than watching Boston lose, it's watching Boston lose during a driving rainstorm.
How about a mud bath at home plate! Some golf ball-sized hail? Horizonal rain. Come on, ESPN! Come on, Weather Channel. Bring it on. I will happily watch.

El Duque, you're an evil man!
Red Sox have played so badly over the last few weeks that you'd think somebody there accidentally pulled a Ba-Boone special and hit the SELF-DESTRUCT button.
Ain't nothin' like watchin' somebody else lose when you yourself suck. Livin' life vicariously. Or anti-vicariously. Semi-vicariously. Whatever.
If (or when) the Red Sox lose, we should celebrate in style. Because that's likely the only celebratin' we'll get to do this year.
Now that the games are meaningless, of course the Bronx Bastards won last night and took 3 out of 4 against the Rays. Effing Cashman & Boone will claim their Bullshit Trophy. But we know the truth: Tampa didn't give a shit and was already preparing for the post-season.
The only hope we have is that Boston fails, wipes out totally, epic failure. Then Tampa gets ice cold sitting on their asses for a week. If those things happen, then the Yankees might actually have a chance to make it to the World Series.
I don't know about you's guys, but the thought of the Yankees making it to the World Series this year is kind of scary for me. Because 2024 will seem like a slap on the wrist compared with what most likely happens this year. Yanks were thoroughly embarrassed by the fucking Dodgers in 2024, as we all remember that walk off grand slam & that horrible 5th inning. This year, it could be the greatest drubbing ever witnessed, against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brew Crew routinely put up 20 runs in a game this year. How 'bout gettin' killed by a combined score of 100-6 in four games? Would that leave a sour taste in your mouth? If you're going to play terribly, better not to even make it to the grand spectacle, says I.
You have a good point, Hammer. And the 2024 World Series was a disgrace, particularly because the Dodgers were playing hurt, Shohei Ohtani pinning up his uniform sleeve at one point.
We are all too capable of playing a World Series just like last night's beaut.
Also, Carl Weitz is completely right. It's absurd that the Yankees are desperately trying to find the right, back-of-the-bullpen pitcher before the start of a best-of-three playoff.
They won't need him. (And hey, how about that Clarke Schmidt getting hurt again already? Are you kidding me?)
The guy who should be on the roster, instead of Michael Fulmer or Luis Gil—or Heliot Ramos or Ahmed Rosario or Ryan McMahon or Max Schuemann—is Oswaldo, inexplicably and unthinkingly discarded right before the playoffs.
Insanity.
