Letter to the Editor: Maz still rules

Re: David Moulton's March 27 Daily News article, "20 years later, (Christian) Laettner's shot still one for the ages."

David, I must take issue with your designation of the Duke-Kentucky universities basketball game as the second greatest sporting event.

By any measure Pittsburgh Pirates' Bill Mazeroski's walk-off home run in the 1960 World Series to defeat the mighty New York Yankees was much more dramatic.

First, it was the championship game. Duke-Kentucky was merely the East Region Final. Second, it was achieved at the highest level of the sport. The 1960 Yankee roster included Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford - all baseball immortals.

You point to the fact that in the Duke-Kentucky game "neither team missed for a five minute stretch." In the 10-9 Pirates victory, every batter either walked or put the ball in play. There were no strikeouts.

Given the fact that the "Miracle on Ice" hockey game during the 1980 Winter Olympics was not the gold medal game, I think there is a case to be made for Pirates versus Yankees as No. 1.

No. 2? Tiger Woods' 15-shot victory at the U.S. Open in 1990 at Pebble Beach.
