Basically saying that since the kids took over that the Yanks are probably spending under 30% of their revenue on players when most other teams are around 50% (which is also the number most major league sports prefers all teams to be at). Ooops!
Makes me wonder if they do remove the cap then would the Yanks spend a fortune on the Mannys and Harpers, etc or not? I'm thinking no. Seems the kids are simply flat out cheapos!
And thanks for the interesting article, Vampifella. I even have to hand to one of our rivals, Pinstripe Alley, for this one.
According to the piece, the Yanks spending on payrolls has fallen from 84.3 percent of revenue in 2004, to just 29.7 percent in 2018.
This is even more enraging when you consider that the Yankees, like almost all major-league clubs, always, are lying.
They claimed, for instance, that in 2004 their payroll was $222.6 million, and their total revenue, $264 million.
But look at their attendance for 2004: 3,775,292.
If you figure just $20 a head, that's over $75 million. Considering parking, souvenirs, drinks, and rat-feces-covered hot dogs, we're probably talking much more like $40-$50 a head in profit, or more like $150-187 million or so.
Throw in national TV revenue, radio broadcast rights, foreign broadcast rights (Yanks already had Matsui), YES local TV revenues, and out-of-the-park souvenirs, and I'm guessing that we're talking about a far go more than $264 mill in total revenue.
Maybe $300-$350? Maybe $400 mill?
In other words, the Yanks' payroll never approached 84 percent of revenues. I frankly doubt if it was ever more than 40 percent. Which means that now it's probably down around 15 percent or so—maybe less, considering how many media sources have been added.
Vampifella, I just read your linked article. I think everyone here knows I have been a bit wrathful since the end of the postseason. Just a bit. What's going on stinks of collusion among the owners with the Steinbrenners leading the pack. My rage is really starting to warm up. As BTO put it so well: You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet.
And yes, I thought that $20 was low, too, although we were talking about 14 years ago.
But yes, the salient point here is that baseball owners find a thousand ways to lie. They have spent decades saying they lose money every year...but, somehow, rarely take the lucrative offers for their teams.

They are just salting away our money.
$20 a head, Hoss? That is too precious!
MLB clubs do not report merchandising as part of their "revenue."
