So... he's signed with Washington for six years? Might be a smart move: He won't have to face the DH 120 times per year.
He reminds me of another former future great Yankee.

Well. Look at it this way, it frees up 20-25M per year for someone else. Happ plus 1/2 of Manny or Harper. They'd better not sit on it though.
Can't blame Corbin though. It was probably 20-25 million bucks difference. That's a lot to pass up. 1-2M les to play on your childhood fave, sure. What difference does it make? 25? That's a lot of money to leave on the table.
When was the last time we got "our man" though? Tanaka?
Doug K.
Just read it was 40M more. Or, since the Yankee offer was 5/100 40% More.
Doug K.
$40MM will buy a lot of beer. Shit, I'd play for the Red Sux for $40MM, and I hate those motherhumpers -- not that they're offering me a plug nickel, but you get the idea. Corbin's big problem now is that he hasn't lived up to el duque's standard for Upstate New York fanboys. He will rue the day, which will probably come about 4.5 years from now when Cashman picks up Corbin in one of his genius mid-season trades that, as usual, amount to a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.
Most valuable franchise in sports, or one of them anyway, and the Yankees can't afford to go out on a limb for the best pitcher available when what they need most is good pitchers? Where's Ed Figueroa when you need him? Or, for that matter, Gabe Paul?

Welcome back JA Happ?
DOUG K....SO RIGHT.
THEY HAVE BEEN PEDDLUNG THIS AUSTERITY BULLSHIT FOR, I BELIEVE, EVEN LONGER THAN THE LAST 3 YEARS.
FOR THIS TEAM TO NOT SPRING INTO ACTION AFTER WATCHING WHAT THE RED SOX ACCOMPLISHED LAST SEASON, IS UNACCEPTABLE.
THE METS ARE MAKING WAVES.
THE PHILLIES TOO.
THE NATS JUST THREW AROUND $140 MILLION LIKE IT WAS CHUMP CHANGE.
THE BRAVES ARE ON THE HUNT.
CLEVELAND WANTS TO DEAL.
EVERYBODY SEEMS TO WANT TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN....
....EXCEPT US.
IF LOW BALLING CORBIN IS THE WAY WE ARE OPERATING THIS OFF SEASON, THEN FUCK IT ALL TO HELL. [AND YOU ALL KNOW I DON'T EVEN WANT CORBIN]....BUT IT'S A PATTERN I SEE, THAT NONE OF US LIKE.
WE ALWAYS SEEM TO COME UP SHORT.
BUMGARNER AND KLUBER ARE SUPPOSEDLY AVAILABLE...
THE METS ARE MENTIONED AS A TRADE PARTNER FOR BOTH!!..[AND THEY HAVE ALMOST NOTHING TO GIVE]!!!
SO HOW COME CASHMAN CAN'T PULL ANYTHING OFF? WE ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE A PLETHORA OF GREAT ARMS THROUGHOUT THE MINORS!
....AND FUCK JAMES PAXTON!
THAT DEAL INCLUDED OUR #1 PROSPECT WHO WE SHOULD HAVE CONVERTED INTO A BETTER PITCHER LIKE KLUBER OR BUMGARNER!
I CANT STAND CASHMAN AND HAL MUCH LONGER.
IT'S HIGH-NOON FOR THEM.
....AND I'M FUCKING GARY COOPER.
None of us are going to be happy with the future.
You said it, ALL-CAPS and Doug K.
From the stats ALL-CAPS provided, it looks like we may have dodged a bullet with Corbin. But what ARE we doing instead?
The Paxton trade may easily prove disastrous, in giving up Sheffield for such an iffy commodity.
Corbin may not be Cy Young. He may not be worth all that money. But for the Yankees to let him go because of 40 million spread over six years and that sixth year itself...well, that's just stupid. So he sucks in the sixth year, even the fifth. How about the years before then? We just aren't interested in those?
I cannot understand the rationale used by the front office. Yeah, sure, maybe the Nats overpaid on an overlong contract. But this isn't a contest to see which GM is the shrewdest in the land, it's about winning. And the Yankees have boatloads of money, which, if they actually spent more of it, would generate an amazing amount of more money.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
I would agree in theory, John M. But sadly, I'm not sure if the Yankees CAN generate a huge pot of extra money, compared to the fortune they're already making.
The capacity of the current Yankee Stadium is 54.251. Multiply that by 81 and you get 4,394,331. As it was, the Yanks drew 3,482,855, or almost 43,000 a game last year.
In other words, they're pretty close to full capacity now, plus there's all that glorious TV money, souvenirs, Yankee Franks, etc. I think Hal is probably thinking, "Geez Louise, am I REALLY going to generate enough new revenue to offset adding another, what, $30-60 mill to the payroll every year for at least 6-7 years to come?"
I suspect he'd rather not gamble on that, particularly when his big, global vision is to build NYCFC, as part of his ongoing partnership with Man City and its Saudi sheikh owners. If he can talk the City of New York into a big real estate deal wrapped around a soccer stadium—and judging by the Amazon deal, these days the City of New York can be talked into pretty much anything—then he's home free, and forget about all this penny-ante baseball stuff.
