Glass Half-Empty, Glass Half-Full...of Hemlock

So, going into tonight's Showdown in Motown, what do we see?

Is it—glass half-full!—amazing that your New York Yankees are still playing .500 ball despite the fact that...

—Literally one-third of the starting lineup still does not have an RBI.

—The team has stolen all of 2 bases in 3 attempts.

—Aaron Judge has exactly 1 home run and 1 RBI.

—The Yanks are averaging more than 9 strikeouts a game.

—Our new, gloveman shortstop can't play the position.

—Gleyber Torres, our superstar of the future, is hitting .161.

—Our ace has no wins and a 5.59 ERA.

OR...is it half-empty?  Your New York Yankees are only playing .500 ball despite the fact that...

—Until the 8th inning on Sunday, they were leading the AL in pitching.

—We actually seem to have a rotation behind the aforementioned "ace."

—The bullpen has been all but lights-out—and is soon to be culled by roster rules.

—Stanton has been hitting about as well as could be expected.

—DJ seems to be back to form and is batting .321.

—Hicks has not only returned, but is hitting .333.

—New backup catcher Lee Trevino is batting .500.

YOU be the judge! But half-empty or half-full...look out for that hemlock!

Infield drop plates two, Maybin mentions "good juju".

Not sure what to make if this.

Just take the runs and don’t question how

Our best offensive weapon ... opponents who can't catch the ball.

Our "ace" has thrown 60+ pitches and has yet to get out of the second inning

This game's final score is going to be like 12-10 and neither team will have more than 5 hits.

Quick ... lobby to get the sticky stuff legal again. Then maybe Cole can get someone out.

Cole is a washed up headcase. Maybe...maybe...they can salvage him as a serviceable 5th starter. Another Cashtastic triumph.

Wonder what Cole’s excuse will be tonight…the cold I guess.

He won’t have to say anything. We’ll all be busy talking about the 89mph curveball that Julio Gallo fanned at with runners on.

I think the winemaker is going to tie Stanton for second in the team strikeout race tonight. And when he does, Boone will be so proud of him after the game: "He's starting to see the ball as badly as he's certainly able to. He's putting some good whiffs out there. His lack of production is catching up to what we always knew he could."

Meanwhile the Yankees are leading the Tiger 3-2 in runs (but tied in ribbies), 10-9 in whiffs, and tied in leaving runners stranded.

And DAMN! behind by one in BBs - if it weren’t for that Bad News Bears play in the 1st..

Where would the Yankees would be without it?

I’m sure Booooooooone will come up with some pearls of wisdom.

Meanwhile, Ernest&Julio got another hat trick.

Can a sombrero be far behind?

My apologies: the Yankees would be LOSING were it not for the Alphonse and Gaston routine.

OLE!

Way to go Joey Whiffs…

Can…it’s not going to be ok…

Not-Michael Kay just said “There’s a big gaping hole in the middle of the Tiger infield” during Gallo’s last strike out (which can be used synonymously with “Gallo’s last at-bat”). I think he meant to say, “There’s the big gaping hole in the middle of the Yankee lineup.”

Hope we’re not being set up for another Crapman explosion…

The Falafel is hitting .258/.324/.323 and can barely field his position. By the standards of this team, he is practically Ted Williams. He is now among my favorite Yankees.

It is going to be a long season.

The sweat shop blowing this game would be a fitting ending

I’m praying for extras so Judge can join Gallo in a post-game Mexican hat dance

1-11 with runners in scoring position, 13 K's—including 9 by our trio of "sluggers" (that race is going to REALLY heat up!).

BernBabyBern said...

Joey Whiffs with 4Ks tonight. Ugh. Yet there is an almost cult-like group on social media insisting he's an elite player and anyone who thinks that actually making contact with the ball more than once a week would be a good thing JUST DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE GAME!

HoraceClarke66 said...

Poor, poor, unlucky Gallo.

Maybe Dillon Lawson's hitting mantra should change from "Hit strikes hard" to "Hit strikes."

HoraceClarke66 said...

BBB, don't forgot the Gallo throw on that sacrifice fly! Despite having plenty of time he threw...both short and way off line to home!

Remember, Gallo "provides a ton of value." A TON!

HoraceClarke66 said...

Non-professional hitting v. professional hitting:

Yanks up 3-2 in the top of the ninth, needing to score a runner from second to get a valuable insurance run.

Stanton, with one out: swings at inside pitch on 0-2, pops up weakly to left field.

LeMahieu, with two outs: takes a pitch on the outside corner to right, the opposite field, scoring the run.

This is how we do it...

AboveAverage said...

I have seen how best to pitch to Gallo.

95% success at neutralizing his bat.

75% of achieving a strike out.

Poor guy - it must pain hime to know that the science behind his elimination is greater than 91%

Suicide watch may be next

13 k’s, ugh. DTR gifted us this win with that effed-up play in the First. Gold Star for the Pen, they were outstanding - including Chapman.

Imperfect win for an imperfect team. We’ll take it.

Winemaker now tied for second. I believe in him. First place by the time they leave Detroit. You heard it here first

Good attitude, 999! Baseball during wartime!

Sure glad we didn't go after that Scherzer guy, over the many years. What a loser!

Cole ERA in his last 7 starts, going back to last season: 7.55

Boone's quote: "I probably should've gone out there and got him earlier."

Sigh.

Booooooone's quote: "I probably should've gone out there and got him earlier."

Yeah, Horace, like, before the game.

Aaron Judge: 40ABs, 13Ks

That and $30MM will get you on the subway.

When a win feels like a morning after drinking cheap Blatz beer til closing time.

It's baseball season.

I get the NY Post and Daily news online.
I did it after I retired and moved away primarily to keep up with theYanks.

I just realized that over the last 3 days, when I went to their sites to read them, I did not read any Yankee stories, instead reading about the NY Giants draft.
Yes, those NY Football Giants.

That says it all huh.

My subconscious prevailed over habits
