So long, Franchy, hello, Jake: The desperate Yanks grasp at a new straw

If you hear an evil, Draconian cackling on the wind, don't grab the garlic. It's not Nicolas Cage - just the unholy chuckle of Redsock fans, savoring the Franchy Cordero narrative.

For a few magical days in an otherwise rainy April, Yank fans lived the fantasy that Cooperstown Cashman had - (holding my nose now) - "done it again!" Yes, the Bigwig of Baldness he had woven yet another patch on his quilt of scrap yard reclamations. He had plucked Franchy from a recycling bin following a Ruthian month of March for the then-inconsequential O's. He hit three HRs, two game-changers, and John Sterling shouted, "You can bet the ranchy on Franchy!" a homer-holler soon to be a trivia answer in hardcore Yankee hellholes.

I plead guilty. I envisioned Franchian blasts that bent Bostonian noses, as he achieved the potential he once embodied. It's been a while since the Yankees found gold while panning Redsock stool. The worst part of this millennium is not insulated crocs, but Boston's four rings, twice as many as ours (and that's if we include 2000.) On April 10, Franchy looked like a steal.

Oh, those were the days...

Last night, he was dispatched to Scranton after going 0-for-3 - (on an Ozempic-worthy 1-for-21 shrinkage) - with two Ks and a pair of OF blunders. I haven't read the agate in Franchy's contract, but my guess is that he'll look around - fruitlessly - for another MLB team, and then start calling rental agents around Moosic.

The Yankees will turn to Jake Bauers, another former OF-1B prospect who is better suited for DH. They will swap Bauers' April for Franchy's March, though neither matter. Bauers, 27, is a career .213 hitter with a puncher's chance of homering - he  had 7 in Scranton. Last year, bumbling around Triple A, he hit .183. No matter what Bauers does tonight, let's hold off on the Matt Carpenter comparisons.

Of course, last night never felt real. It was a mismatch - their best starter against our worst. (Though that is arguable, I suppose: Brito vs. Schmidt? A debate in hell.)

By the fourth inning, the Yankees were plucked and cooked. Meanwhile, the outcome was overshadowed by an MRI on Aaron Judge's hip, a scan with implications beyond our dolphin-like comprehension. This could be a hiccup, with Judge returning soon. But if the scan reveals something - (and rest assured, the Yankees won't tell us) - it might affect the season and the decade. We're talking about a hip. This is not a hamstring.

Yes, it's early. That's our golden mantra. But at the standings are starting to pinch. Look at the AL East: Three young, ascending teams are starting to separate from the tired, lackluster bottom-dwellers. It's too early to self-immolate, and swapping out Franchy for Bauers is a nothing-burger - no, a meatless Impossible Nothingburger.

So long, Franchy, we'll always have Paris. I'm just glad we didn't bet the ranchy.

Apparently, Judge is not THAT injured and may or may not be placed on the IL depending on who he feels each day. They may IL him and back date it, etc., etc.
However, reading the explanation in NJ.com is like listening to Kamala expound on something esoteric .

Right now I am getting antsy for tonights' game to see if Jake will make his Pinstriped Debut against Eovaldi.
My memory is not that good. Wasn't Nate once that year's version of Rodon?

I think at this point the biggest thing of Yankee interest is what the Master will warble when Bauers hits his HR, which may or may not happen.

Anyone? Bueller?

I can bet the ranchy...that Franchy...doesn't return to the Yanks...

The weird thing is that as bad as the Yankees are, and they are bad, 15-12 would be only one game back in the Central and 1/2 game back in the West.

That said, they really need to stop starting Schmidt. I realize that management has a problem recognizing mistakes but sending a guy out there with virtually no chance of succeeding game after game after game is the very definition of madness.

And, unlike Hicks, who can only screw up a part of a game, Schmidt puts the entire game out of reach relatively quickly.

It's NEVER too early to self-immolate, especially when Brian is at the helm and Hal is still overlord. As an aside, Randy "the Frog" Levine was in a news article I just read that was quite odious.

Pity the poor baseball fan last night. You pay a small fortune to watch Judge match-up against deGrom...and neither is playing by the fourth inning.

Meanwhile, a boy showed up to say that Harrison Bader will not come today, but he might be here tomorrow.

(With a shout-out to The Archangel.)

Jack Bauer can’t save this team

BTR999 said...

Again, filter any Bauer expectations through the reality of his being released by 3 other Orgs, including Tampa Bay, the most astute talent evaluators in the business. He’s had 1000 MLB AB’s, never hit ML pitching. Having said that, he can’t be any worse than Cordero, Man Tits, or Hicks. Go ahead and give him another chance if you must.

Florial: “Who’s a guy gotta blow to get a shot around here?”

Doug K. said...

He's got to blow Bubbles.

Tuned to the Islander game last night. It looked good for a while, but winning a game 1-0 is the hardest way to win, and they blew it late and lost in overtime. So end of story there....

Then I watched The Omen with Gregory Peck. I had seen pieces of it on tv before, but this was the first time that I watched it from beginning to end. Good movie. Very tightly directed, without any unnecessary dead spots, thoroughly held my interest from beginning to end. They don't make 'em like that anymore!

BTR999 said...

Bauers officially added and will be in uniform tonight.

Trivino (remember him?) moved to the 60 day IL and could be headed for surgery. Either way done for the year.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Yeah, the number of active NYC teams down from 7 to 5, and it will be 4 after tonight.

That is, if you consider the Yankees to be active.

The Hammer of God said...

Turning to the Yankee shit show, which I thankfully by-passed last night, so they finally pulled the plug on Franchy, eh? Should've been done a week ago, but better late than never.

It is interesting that they give castoffs from other teams a bigger and better shot than they give their own (like Florial) but it doesn't appear to be a big loss either way.

So now it's life without Judge. Did I say that I didn't like Judge in the #2 slot, running the bases, stealing bases? It may or may not have contributed to the injury or injuries, but I still think that it was dumb, dumb, dumb to have him running the bases like a quasi leadoff man. Also stupid to have him playing musical outfield, making diving catches in CF. Didn't he even play 1B for a game in spring training? A first baseman's split can't exactly be good for your groin or your hip. What'll they have him doing next? Playing goal for the New York Rangers? Not good. Big heavy guys shouldn't be running around trying to things that suit smaller, lighter guys.

So now it's on to another castoff (Bauer) coming to save the day because our previous castoff (Franchy) couldn't get the job done. Really? This any better than throwing our most talented outfield prospects into the major league fire and trying to develop them up here?

What the Judge injury (or the Judge scare, if it turns out to be only a minor temporary thing) shows is that you'd better develop your young players fast. Putting all your eggs in one basket for a player on the wrong side of age 30, and having nobody else that scares the opposition, is not a recipe for success. But we all knew that already, right?

Great movie, creepy as hell. "It's all for you Damien" is a frequently-used line in our house referring to the Grand Princess

With luck, Bauers can give the Yanks a 10 day hot streak while he has a ton of adrenaline and gets a steady diet of fastballs. By then, the league will have him figured out and he'll resume his normal AAAA existence. But it'll be fun for a bit. Devil his due, Cash is pretty good at ID'ing an incipient flash-in-the-pan.

Publius said...

"Forget it, Jake. It's Cashman."

Hazel Motes said...

I don't see how this can be great news if it's taking so long to release any news about the Judge MRI.

Hazel Motes said...

Hammer wrote, "It is interesting that they give castoffs from other teams a bigger and better shot than they give their own (like Florial). . . ." This is indeed a weird organizational pathology that began with Steinbrenner.

Hazel Motes said...

Bauers's promotion, like Cordero's, is yet another instance of the Cashman/Boone recency bias. There is nothing analytical or rational about it.

Jake “The Snake” Bauers…

Bauers gets the start in LF.

Pitching matchup not in our favor, especially with this AAAA lineup.

JUDGE:

Mild hip strain due to that head first slide.

Or. . . did it happen when he annoyingly put his hands on his hips in disgust with Hicks the other night and bruised both his hip flexors.

We'll never know the truth - but it should be one to three weeks . . .

Yay!

Joe of AZ said...

I mean well the Good News is Miguel Andujar looks GREAT in the pirates WINNING lineup....

Hazel Motes said...

I don't buy this jazz about a slide as the root cause of Judge's hip problem. The proximate cause, perhaps, but that hip was probably already weakened from some other cause; guys just don't suddenly damage their hips on routine slides. Fingers? Yes. Wrists? Yes. Shoulders? Yes. But hips? Far less likely. And what might that deeper cause be?

Hazel Motes said...

Routine head-first slides, that is. Throw in legs and ankles and feet for feet-first slides.

Doug K. said...

Bauers hurt. I blame Aaron Hicks

AboveAverage said...

Now that I have stopped laughing and wiped the tears from my eyes can someone please tell what happen to Bauers?

BTR999 said...

Hicks, the prick, almost ran over Volpe.
Cole was on camera during that play and did not look pleased with Hicks’ careless effort.
I thought he’d last the season at least with us, but now not so sure. Looks like he can’t play D anymore.
Also a pathetic K in his first at bat. And by pathetic I mean pitiful , although there is no pity here for Hicks.

And big props to Bauers, putting his body on the line in a fantastic catch in LF. Maybe he’s the gritty overachiever type.

Doug K. said...

He ran full speed into the wall. Made the catch though.

BTR999 said...

No word yet on Bauers, AA….Hopefully, no concussion.

Doug K. said...

bornto -

Yeah, WTF was Hicks doing on that pop up. Volpe had it. This guy has forgotten pretty much every aspect of the game. and good spot on Cole's expression. I think he hates him.

BTR999 said...

Again Hicks! Letting the batter take that extra base!

I can’t watch any more of this

Doug K. said...

Hicks is INSANE right now. He almost wiped out IKF on a ball that belonged to the Center Fielder. It was a good catch but he didn't belong there.

BTR999 said...

Hicks almost another collision.
Can Boone grow a pair and demand cashman do something? Jesus what a bunch!

Doug K. said...

I think Hicks took a bunch of ayahuasca before the game because he knew he wasn't playing and now he's out there tripping his balls off trying to make every play. It's the only rational explanation.

TheWinWarblist said...

I'm not watching. I'm not even listening to The Master. I take a peak at Gamecast every so often. It lets me take the anger and disgust in measured out doses. Easier on my delicate system that way.

I may not be ever present over the next several days. One of my best friends - who I started residency with one July 1st morning - lost his wife a couple of days ago. Sudden cardiac death maybe? We don't know. Their 16 y/o found his mom unresponsive on the bedroom floor. My friend was overseas and had to rush home. She was a lovely person, a truly beautiful family. She was 47.

I always read, every day, every post, every comment, but I may not post much.

Fuck Hal and Fuck this life.

Looks like Brito has figured things out…

Publius said...

Any confidence this lineup can push a couple across in the next few innings? Maybe Rizzo homers, maybe somebody's on base. Very unlikely. This lineup stinks. Then there's 4 innings of the bullpen...

BTR999 said...

Sorry for your loss Winnie.

Publius said...

Good outing from Brito, all things considered. He'll likely take the L, but that's this terrible lineup's fault.

AboveAverage said...

Winny - given your loss I'm very impressed that you were still able to sign off in your very special way.

Publius said...

Meanwhile, Miguel Andujar went 4 for 5 with a homer in his season debut for Pittsburgh today, and Texas's Ezequiel Duran, who looks like the real thing, was surrendered by Cashman in the Joey Gallo trade.

Hazel Motes said...

Make that two homeruns for Andujar for Pittsburgh in today's doubleheader.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Very sorry for your loss, Warbler. I'm sure you will be a great consolation to your friend and his daughter.

IMHO it's a fool's errand to try and second guess injuries. These guys are highly paid athletes, and in Judge's case a very significant part of his value is his defense. I'm not buying a Ferrari and then storing it in a nitrogen rich, climate controlled garage.

But this organization looks too much like the early nineties team (yeah, we do have a helluva lot more pitching talent. That is when healthy). There's no talent in AAA, and for Cashman to make a difference making trade will mean taking dimes on the dollar on POTENTIAL talent at AA. IMO, this is most likely the result of the very linear thinking on saving a buck. The Yankees' greatest asset is their financial might, and George, at times, knew how to wield it. Hal seems determined to be the anti-George. Perhaps George berated him too much when he was coming up. I can't see anyway out of this box for the rest of the year, hopefully Hal spends the money next year without worrying about buying one bauble (Ohtani), but spends the money with a PLAN in mind.
I can't get riled about Boone anymore, this team... I hope that I'm totally wrong on being so glum, who knows that the three Lads suddenly catch fire through the season, the pitchers all heal, and Cashman manages to "steal" a key player. Something to look forward to, right?
