Five takeaways from Opening Day...
1. "Hey now!" Dave Sims, the Seattle-honed radio replacement for The Master, seemed to charm Suzyn, the most important person in the Yankiverse. Several times, she seemed utterly tickled by Sims. (Though, it apparently remains her job to rain down the incessant in-game commercials, electrified by the Jeep brand.)
In the late innings, with a 6'8" Brewers pitcher on the mound and shadows roiling everyone's vision, Sims noted that "he's so tall that his head is in the sun," causing Suzyn to chuckle. For all their famous chemistry, I cannot recall John Sterling saying something that drew from her a belly laugh.
Instead of Sterling's HR calls, Sims shouted his trademark, "Hey, now!" And the game ended without a Win Warble. It certainly isn't the same - it cannot be. But Sims is a pro. He seemed to win over Suzyn. That's a start.
2. The newly minted closer, Devin Williams, did not win over anybody, except maybe the cardiac unit at Mount Sinai. At one point, ESPN analyst Bill Schroeder touched a nerve, mentioning that this was a "typical" Williams save.
Excuse me? A "typical" inning? Tying runs on second? Two hits and a walk? Are you kidding me? I cannot take another Aroldis "Houdini" Holmes - that is, the closer who always fills the bases, who always sends us to the point of madness. Nope. That's not how this guy was sold to us. He was supposed to throw "the air-bender," which nobody can hit.
Later, the ESPN team inferred that Williams is why Owner Hal eliminated the Beard Ban. Is that a joke? For this, we went scruffy? Hey, now!
3. In the Mets loss, Juan Soto went 1-for-3 and left a runner in scoring position. Ha ha. Fuck you, Soto. NY went 0-6 with Runners In Scoring Position.
Looks like Soto brought with him some of last year's Yankee magic. Let the negative juju commence.
4. Troubling was the drop off in the heart of the Yankee order. Goldy, Jazz and The Martian: 0-10 with four Ks. Of course, one game means nothing. But that bottomless hole signifies the sum of all our fears:
That once a pitcher gets past Judge, we fall into a crevice.
For a brand new lineup, yesterday looked quite familiar:
We score early and then go into hibernation. We had so many opportunities to break open the game, and we did nothing. Over the last 10 years, how often has that scenario played out?
5. Nice to see Luke Weaver throw a relatively quick eighth. (One walk.) Weaver remains a mystery, almost too good to be true. There were reports out of Tampa that his mph has dropped a couple ticks. He looked good yesterday.
The Yankees really need a setup guy. They might even need a closer.
Unbottled, unbrewed and unbuttoned. I'll take it.

I suspect a lot of brews will be unbottled this season.
Unwashed and somewhat slightly dazed. I keep having this brainstorm about twelve times a day.
Miss strikes hard.
How many wins will it take for my illustrious peers here to start believing - again- that THIS WILL BE THE YEAR? How much false hope - that most insidious commodity in the universe - will be created by Lord Gammon and his Ites, then CRUELLY SMASHED IN SEPTEMBER, before we say ENOUGH/ BASTA! FINITO! I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE. It's March, people. Get a grip. Celebrate nothing until someone breaks a bottle of champagne over Boone's tiny skull in late October or early November. Until then, we wait, we watch, like grim hedgehogs, from the trenches.
AA closes his eyes and imagines what a grim hedgehog would look like.
Hey now? Somehow, I missed that. Don't remember hearing that at all. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention. Seattle? Is that where they got this guy from? Well, he does make it pulse pounding when something happens, when he starts yelling. His normal voice is somewhat scratchy ... [cough cough] ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhemmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!! Hey now, you're an all star, get your game on, get paid!
Middle of the lineup was an absolute zero, but hey, it was one game. Did I say they'd start slow? Nobody hardly played this spring, except for Wells and Trent Grisham. I can't imagine most of them being ready to play the regular season. They won't get the bats going for at least three weeks, so buckle up, it'll be a rough ride.

Hammer - We're in good hands. Real pro. Strong NY ties.

Why do Yankee fans obsess over Soto leaving? It's simple: (1) if he wanted to get paid, he shoulda left for greener pastures. (2) If he wanted to win a championship, he shoulda left for better management/ownership. (3) If he wanted to be stuck in an endless mediocrity, spewing garbage about fielding a "championship caliber" team, whilst never actually winning a championship, then he shoulda stayed.
If I was him, I woulda left. If Judge was smart, he woulda left. Or maybe Judge is smart after all. Maybe all Judge wants is to play out his career here and get his face planted in bronze in Yankee Memorial Park. Who wants to be a champion? That brings all kinds of problems too. Better to be a veteran soldier who lost a zillion battles and come home in one piece to tell stories about how you got your ass kicked than to be a silent posthumous war hero with a purple heart in your coffin.
Hey, anyone for joining the French Foreign Legion? "Some of you men will try to quit. Others will try to run away. No man in this command has ever succeeded. If the Legion doesn't get you, the desert will. If the desert doesn't get you, the Arabs will. And if the Arabs don't get you, then I will. I don't know which is worse."
As for me, I think I know which is worse: It's staying here and seeing Cashman, Boone, and HAL everyday. Sometimes you just wanna ram your head into a wood chipper.
Thanks Doug!
Yeah, I coulda sworn he has a NY accent.
Let's be real...the Mets ain't winnin nothin anytime soon 😂
As last year's season progressed, it became clear that Weaver was our closer and Holmes made a really good set-up man. So we didn't pursue Holmes, made Weaver the set-up man, and traded for Holmes II.
I know, it's one game...
I think Williams will be OK. If not, I’m happy with Weaver. Williams is a one year rental anyway, no way Steinscammer will pay him the big bucks with so many cheaper options.
Both Judge and Goldschmidt looked awful yesterday. If Judge’s ball didn’t hit the 3B bag it would’ve been a DP. I know, I know…one game.
Saw Cole in the pre-game intro with his arm all bandaged. Where was Elbows Macaroni?
Maybe, but then at least he got paid. If you was a betting man, which team would have the better chance of winning a championship the next ten, twelve years? Well, the Yankees have a probability of zero, so the Mutts couldn't be any worse. That's probably how he figured it.
You’re right Hammer. The only solution is to switch allegiances and start rooting for the Royals. That’ll show the bastards.
RE: Soto. I’m so over it. Hope we’re not gonna spend the season obsessing over everything he does. He was a one year rental, played well for us, then he decided to leave, money being the primary factor as it so often is.
And in other news: Holmes has found a new way to blow ballgames: get it over sooner by blowing the first inning instead of the last
"If Judge’s ball didn’t hit the 3B bag it would’ve been a DP."
Yeah, well, it makes up for two or three of those times that he got pumped out by the umpire for strike 3 on a ball barely ankle high.
I have no ill feelings toward Soto. Zero. I hope he does well, except against the Yankees. But I think most Yankee fans want to see him struck by lightning and turned into a pillar of salt. I don't understand why. He didn't ask Cashman to trade for him. We all knew it was a TERRIBLE trade. Cashman paid too too too much. Two starters and Higashioka should've done it. Maybe one starter + Higashioka + Spencer Jones. But four starters? WOW! That trade is what I can't get over.
Holmes is going to blow out something in his back sooner or later this year.
Soto will blow out one of his hamstrings at some point this year.
If I was a betting man ....
