WELCOME BACK, GOLDIE.
Yes, he'll run hot and cold. Yes, he'll bust a dweezle and miss July and August. Yes, his range has shrunken to the length of a Toyota Corolla. That said, he's our Golden Oldie! our Olden Goldie!, and let's welcome him back to Hell.
In case you missed it, Paul Oldschmidt Goldschmidt is re-upping with the Evil Employer in 2026 for $5 million, which is what Hal Steinbrenner annually spends on clam dip. He's 38, old enough to appear in the Epstein files, but nobody sweats Goldie's rep. He brings to Gotham a veteran glove, a RH bat and a positive cosmic clubhouse presence.
Okay, let's not lie here. We all wanted more than Year II of Goldie. And he might be done. (Last February, who thought DJ LeMahieu's game would so totally collapse?) He'll platoon at 1B with Ben Rice, our great hope, who showed such promise last year, who might hit everyday, and who might even become a frontline catcher.
So, here comes Goldschmidt, for another slice of the Bronx.
At least he knows what he's getting into.
Last year, Goldie started hot and fizzled, ending at .274 with a meager 10 HRs - worst power output in his 15 season career. In October, he went 4-9 - nothing but singles. At 38, he makes a case for Cooperstown. (Check the list: four of his 10 doppelgangers are in the Hall, with Votto on the cusp.)
Listen: We all have doubts about doubling down on the 2025 team, the same lineup - one year older. You have to wonder if this isn't going to be a complete bust of a season.
But let's give Cashman one credit:
It's ballsy as hell.
And if it fails, shit is gonna fly.
So, welcome back, and go-go Goldie!

Ballsy. Cheap. Stupid.
Welcome back, big guy.
Hey, I like Goldie, and respect his accomplishments as a player. 1 year / 5M is a near pittance by today’s standards. But we needed some versatility, speed, OF defense and he provides none of that.
Meanwhile the team is obviously running it back, despite denials of same, it’s been a pathetic do- nothing offseason for cashman & the Yanks, and they deserve every iota of criticism that’s coming their way.
Repeating failed bullshit, lies, fuckups and other bad behavior is common these days. When incumbent politicians in white houses do it, the press calls it "doubling down." It's another form of saying "fuck you, I'm right," another dominance display, another way to assert your genius in the face of reality. That's what Brian is doing. The REAL danger is that they make it into a round or two of the playoffs.
THAT would prove his genius, at least to himself, and continue to make forward change impossible. I don't see that happening, given the improvements in the rest of the AL East, but hey... you can't predict baseball, Suzyn. And it's much easier for Poor Hal, Lord of Cheap, to sit on a pile of rusty bolts after the lockout than to preside over a bunch of highly paid prima donnas.
Poor Hal, this city has really fucked him over, hasn't it? He's not the first rich guy I know who's offended at the idea of paying taxes. I was browsing a book - did not buy it - a bio of Colonel Tom Parker, and it mentioned in passing that Colonel Tom and Elvis considered it PATRIOTIC to pay your taxes, especially if they were high. WHAT A FUCKING CONCEPT.
Love Cash Tender,
Love him Sweet
Kiss his Ass
and
Lick his Feet
All that bullshit we've gone through to run it back again...FFS...
Bad week to stop sniffing Hal's ass.
I'm seeing a pattern in the "similar batters" list. Out of ten...
1) Fred McGriff (former Yankee farmhand) early in career
3) Carlos Beltran - Former Yankee late in Career.
4) Lance Berkman Former Yankee late in Career.
5) Joey Votto Former Yankee late in Career.
7) Matt Holiday Former Yankee late in Career.
Notice none of them are peak versions of themselves.
The problem with Goldie isn't so much what he can offer.
He can mentor Rice.
Maybe, and I mean maybe, he can catch up to fastballs again like he did EARLY last year.
And, while he lacks range, an important but less vital skill at 1B he is/was really good at scooping errant throws.
The problem is he has no positional versatility. He can only play first or DH.
The roster already carries one player who doesn't field in Stanton. This is now a second guy who is locked in.
If we were looking for a right handed bat to serve as a platoon player it was Miggy. He crushes lefties and can play both the out field and the infield in a pinch.
I wonder how much Aaron Juge's influence went into this signing. He does love handing out with ageing first basemen.
Rizzo
Holliday
Goldie.
It's kinda odd.
