It won't matter that they will write checks to Shohei Ohtani into the next millennium. Baseball Reference won't even show an asterisk. What they'll remember is that every winter, the Dodgers shelled out for star after star, while the Yankees counted pennies and finished second in the auctions. The Yankee brain trust achieved its one objective:
Contend into September.
So, here we are. Promises Kept. Mission Accomplished. The Yankees have 32 games left to catch Tampa and/or fend off Boston. Both are doable. Thirty-two games, and if we win half, we reach the postseason. Add another Wild Card flag and prepare for the crapshoot. Here's what's coming:
Three home v Houston. (Need two)
Four home v Boston. (Must win at least two)
Three in LA v Angels. (Sweep?)
Three in San Diego. (Need two.)
Three home v Colorado. (Sweep?)
Three home (so to speak) against Mets. (Just survive. One?)
Three in Minnesota. (Sweep?)
Three in Arizona. (Two)
Three home v Tampa. (Need two, if they matter)
Three home v Baltimore. (Sweep? If they matter.)
We won't go the parenthetical 23-9. Expect a three-game losing streak, somewhere, probably around the Mets. But to miss the playoffs would require an A.I. Gene Mauch, Philadelphian collapse. With Aaron Judge returning, it's not hard to imagine the Yankees going 20-12. That would put hard heat on Tampa, who is already enduring 105-degree days in front of invisible crowds. Fifteen thousand fans meant sellouts at Steinbrenner Field. They look paltry in the Tropicana Dome.
The Yankees play 10 against Boston, Tampa and the Mets. That's your season, folks. Get ready. For better or worse, this weekend could define the 2026 Yankees. But the Dodgers will win, anyway.

Sonny Gray could win 20. 20 for Sonny ain’t funny.
Knicks in 5.
Let's not lose sight of the really important result: Boston gets stiffed and goes home after 162. This is absolutely necessary.
We can catch the Rays. They're human, they have to be dispirited playing in front of so few fans. First place team? Nah, I got oranges to squeeze. Early Bird Specials to enjoy. Big weekend coming up at Sea World.
Gotta be one of the worst--maybe the worst?--baseball markets ever. The Boston Bees, St. Louis Browns, and Washington Senators drew better crowds.
If I owned the Rays, I would never have asked for the Trop to be fixed. I would've demanded MLB find me a better place to field a team. Nashville? Raleigh-Durham? Biloxi? Somewhere.
The sonofabitch couldn't do it in New York. Old bastard.
Thanks for the pep talk, JM. And you're right - there is NO WAY Tampa should have a pro team. So many other, better markets for their "product."
I must be an unavowed pessimist, at least as a Yankee fan. You know I can't see the Yankees winning any more than 8 or 9 of those games? That's 9-23 down the stretch run. Or 8-24. And that's with Judge coming back. Yeah, .250 baseball down the stretch.
You know Tampa and Boston kills the Yankees. We'd be fortunate to win one fucking game out of the seven total against them. The Mets kill the Yankees usually. The Yankees play terribly in the Arizona desert. Expect total annihilation in AZ by the snakes. The fucking ASS-stros always kill the Yankees. Expect the ASS-stros to come alive. They've been waiting to play the Yankees, dreams of beating the Yankees dancing in their fevered brains. The Altar Boys are a really good team now and coming on strong. We'd do well to win one fucking game in San Diego. I think the Yanks will likely get swept there; call the Priest, everyone! Thus, out of this group of games, we'll need a miracle to win two fucking games!
The only series where the Yanks might manage a win or two are against the Angels, Colorado, the Twinkies, and the last series against the Boyds.
There's your 9-23 record!
David.
Cone.
Tampa should relocate to Homer, Alaska.
A lament
Sonny,
yesterday your mind was filled with pain.
Sonny ,
you left our team and learned to pitch again.
Oh, your dark days are gone
And your fastball is back.
Your off-speed stuff
is now painting the black.
Oh Sonny
You were traded for dung...
Now you’re Cy Young.
My….uh……sediment. Exactly
making me weep over here, Doug...
