I think it's astonishing, given the lineups the Yankees fielded and their cumulative slumps and (in a bunch of cases) inexperience, that the Yanks were close to winning any of these games, much less being within a couple hits of winning three of them. It's a rotten feeling to see them get shut down by the Mets but while I'd love to have seen Romine and Adams et al. lead the way, I'm not sure it's reasonable to have even suspected it possible...and yeah; Francesa and a lot of other people refer to the Mets as a Double-A team, but they came into the series good enough to win about 40% of their games and they leave with a sweep. Not saying they're great or even good, but they are major leaguers.
Tough losses for sure, but not unreasonable ones given the situation...but there's a sense of hope that pervaded things a month or so ago, and that feels completely gone...and I cannot see Grandy or Tex or Youk or Jeet or A-Rod bringing back the feeling. And that's much worse than the sweep, because that makes me agree with the photo: I fear the building's been blown.
I think the answer here is not the building that's been blown, but the Yankee players who have not been. For this, we must appeal to the Yankee wives and significant others--take your cue from Megan on 'Mad Men', who helped Don Draper feel like Superman going into his big presentation. The Yankeeverse will be forever grateful, and we will call you in the morning.
