Young v Old, a staggeringly simple way to view the 2020 Yankees

Okay, let's keep this primal. Though there are many, many, many mitigating factors, let's study the 2020 Yankees, based entirely on - duh - age. Yep, nothing more than what it says on their birth certificates (assuming they are honest docs - see Soriano, Alphonso.)

Which Yankees should improve or deteriorate next year, simply by virtue of absorbing the gamma rays of another trip around the sun?

Players who should still be shy of their peaks - ages 29-31 - (with next year's age):
Aaron Judge, 28.
Gleyber Torres, 23.
Luis Severino, 26.
Gary Sanchez, 27.
Miguel Andujar, 25.
Clint Frazier, 26.
Chance Adams, 26.
Luis Cessa, 28.
Jonathan Holder, 27.

Jonathan Loiasiga, 26.
Jordan Montgomery, 27.
Stephen Tarpley, 27.
Thairo Estrada, 24.
Mike Ford, 28.
Tyler Wade, 26.
Everybody at Scranton, more or less.

Players who should still be at peak:
Giancarlo Stanton, 31.
Aaron Hicks, 31.
Gio Urshela, 29.
Luke Voit, 29.
Mike Tauchman, 29.
Chad Green, 29.
Ben Heller, 29.
Tommy Kahnle, 30.
Kyle Higashioka, 30.

Players slightly past peak.
Zach Britton, 32.
Aroldis Chapman, 32.

James Paxton, 32.
Masahiro Tanaka, 32.

Players way past peak, entering twilight:

Brett Gardner, 37.

JA Happ, 38.
Adam Ottavino, 35.

Conclusion: Duh. If the 2009 World Champion Yankees simply do nothing - that is, stay the course and replace CC Sabathia, Austin Romie and Didi Gregorius, this team should win 95 games and reach the 2020 post-season.

But 2020 looks like the final year of this generational surge. If we fail next October, the roster will be seriously starting to gray.

Thus, with regard to current free agents, you'd think Cooperstown Cashman will want pitchers before or at their peaks. That is Zach Wheeler, Madison Bumgarner and Gerrit Cole - all 29. (Stephen Strasburg is 31.)

Of course, we face huge intangibles. Who is Luis Severino? Can Gleyber play SS? Can Judge play a full season? What of Miguel Andujar? Is Gio Urshela for real? How can we get rid of Giancarlo Stanton?

A crazy future. But make no mistake: It's 2020 or bust. If we fail next season, by this time next December, we could be facing a tear-down.

So... our four best pitchers are "beyond peak." Perhaps not a good sign, unless you're holding on to the idea, somehow, that Severino is an ace.

This is why the holiday season is so depressing.

Fuck Hal.

Key question: Can Aaron Judge play 150-odd games? In one season?

Key question: Can Aaron Hicks play 100-odd games?

Key question: Can The Red Menace keep his head away from walls?

Key question: Can GStanton find other ways to injure himself for extended periods?

Key question: How many additional pitchers are needed for the team to get to 162 starts (i.e., how many injuries will the starting staff suffer...)???

Key question: If they don't keep Gardy and don't re-up EE, who is the veteran leader in the clubhouse?

I have a few hundred others. Really! Like: Can Joe Biden hit in the clutch? If Tulsi Gabbard married "OK Boomer," would she become "Tulsi OK"...? If Trump loses in the 2020 election, will I ever laugh again?

ALL OF A SUDDEN, 28 AND 27 SEEMS SO OLD. (JUDGE AND SANCHEZ).

YEARS ARE GOING BY WITH NO RING TO SHOW.

WINDOW IS STILL OPEN.

WITHOUT ANY ACES, IT WILL CLOSE AFTER 2 MORE YEARS.

TRADES ALONE WON'T DO IT.....AND IT WILL DEPLETE OUR FARM.

IT'S SPEND NOW, OR PAY LATER.

GET TO WORK COOP AND HAL.

Another key question: Can the Astros stop cheating so the Yanks can win a series against them fairly?

And that's the thing: it seems that these days, you're best off with an older ace or two, one who is PAST the arm miseries. The only way you get that: free agent market.

Which is why this team, already aging prematurely, is never going to get there.
