Yeah, who needs Romine...

Our brilliant new backup catching acquisition. He's been signed.

Well, at least he walks a lot.

A classic lugnut.

I think I'm gonna puke.

Yankees are close to signing veteran catcher Chris Iannetta to a minor league deal. [JM note: DONE!] Played 14 seasons mostly with COL and LAA. Turns 37 in April. Along with Eric Kratz, will provide veteran depth/competition for Kyle Higashioka as backup to Gary Sanchez.

This is great...

Garrison Lassiter, a failed MLB prospect who never made it past High-A, sued the New York Yankees for $34 million and blamed Yankees legend Derek Jeter for derailing his career as a shortstop.

Lassiter is a career .244 hitter with four home runs and 73 runs batted in over five seasons.

Jeter's resume as a Yankee speaks for itself: 14-time All-Star, five-time World Series champion, five-time Gold Glover, cementing himself as one of the greatest to ever play the game and wear the pinstripes.

In the bizarre lawsuit, Lassiter used letters, newspaper clippings and scouting reports to claim that there was a conspiracy against him in order to "protect the career of Derek Jeter".

Lassiter says he is broke and homeless, having to sleep in his car. The Yankees signed him to a $675,000 signing bonus back in 2008.

Hey, Cashman! You haven't signed the best player in baseball at his position for over a week! You're a bum!

God, we need more trolls who have never read this blog, shitting and smearing their feces all over the wall. Yeah, bring it on, you God-fearing jackasses.

Ahhh Dave in CA. The Jim Bakker of the chat room.

By the way, who here would trade Judge for Betts? I would.

TheWinWarblist said...

Oh bitty, Chris Iannetta is not good at baseball in the same way that David in Cal is not good at thinking. The off-season seems so long when the days are this short ... and David in Cal is this stupid ...

Oh so very stupid, you imbecile ...

CAN IANNETTA THROW ANYBODY OUT?

CAN HE CATCH?

DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT HIM.

WOW, THAT LASSITER STORY IS SOMETHING ELSE, ISN'T IT?

The Lass story just proves what we all already know: This nation has a serious oversupply of lawyers. And lawyers really love to sue people with "deep pockets." Who has deeper pockets than the NYYs? The team sure ain't spending overly much.

- - -

As for Romine: I liked him as a backup catcher. I have been wondering why he was disappeared. A lot of times when a ballplayer disappears from a team, there might be reasons.

Please note: THIS IS NOT A RUMOR THING, I don't know any of this. I have not read or heard any of this. My thinking (if you can call it that, and will please excuse the outflow of my own personal nonsense):

1. The guy wsa a bad influence in the clubhouse.

2. The guy's sexual proclivities were different from the majority in the clubhouse. In other words: The other 24 guys are LGBT, Romine was cis-whatever.

3. The guy was stubborn, wouldn't learn, wouldn't adjust his approach to the game. Think Mickey Rivers.

4. The guy's performance sagged. In these days of half a million numbers on each player's daily crotch-scratching, you probably could find a number that would provoke a team to give up on Mickey Mantle in 1955.

5a. The guy drinks a lot.
5b. Or uses dope. Or crack.
5c. Or opiods.
5d. Or uses performance-enhancing drugs, a thing most teams want to avoid (at least, they don't want it out in public).
5e. The guy eats too much Maypo.

6. There was one or more run-ins between the player and someone important on the team (think: Aaron Judge). Think about the time Papelbon tried to strangle Bryce Harper. Wouldn't you make Papelbon gone? (I know, most on this blog would make Papelbon disappear as a matter of course). In fact, tho, the Nats kept him another year.

7. The guy is having an affair with the wrong person's wife. Or a 12-year-old. If you had a typical Irish Catholic priest on your ballclub, abusing boys, wouldn't you get rid of him? That apparently is what each parish has done, ain't it?

8. The guy just won't shower. He smells bad. All the time. Players are puking in the clubhouse because of his aroma.

9. The guy actually took the opportunity to tell Hal, or Cashmoney, or Lorna Boone, exactly what that person is doing wrong. In detail. At 155 decibels. None of my bosses liked to hear this from me. When I was a boss, I REALLY didn't like to hear it (even when correct) from the people I had hired. Fortunately, while I am of Sicilian descent and got really angry at such things, I lacked the power to fire people willy-nilly. Hal doesn't.

10a. Romine told Sanchez what he was doing wrong. Gary don't like to hear it, does he?
10b. Romine is the reason GStanton can't hit when we need him to.
10c. Romine tried to get Aaron Judge's mom into the sack.
10d. Romine was secretly having an affair with John Sterling.

11. He was the "source" for a lot of reporting by the Gammonites when it come to negative things about the team.

12. He votes Democrat, and Hal is a rock-ribbed Republican.

I know, none of this makes sense. But I can't find a "baseball" reason to get rid of a solid backup catcher -- and every team in baseball NEEDS one of those, but esp. if Sanchez is your starter -- based on what I think I know about Romine's ability to hit and catch.

9. Especially when correct ...

I haven't seen anything negative about Romine except that he's a better catcher than Ice Cream and is a much better situational hitter.

Oh, wait...

I think you’re on to something, JoeFoB - I can’t think of any “baseball” reasons for not keeping Romine. He must have pissed off somebody in management somewhere. I expect Sanchez will tweak something early on in the season and the Yanks will desperately try to trade for a replacement. Wasn’t Maldonado, Cole’s personal catcher available?

As to Papelbon - two things changed my mind about him somewhat. One year he was on the all-star team and spent the whole time following Mariano around, sitting next to him on the bench, and gushing to the press about how he idolized him. Then later, he tried to strangle Bryce Harper. How bad could the guy be, really?

Those are funny but I suspect the reason is more about Romine than the Yankees.

He will get more playing time with Detroit and they have young catchers to mentor.

So more money.
More playing.
And more coaching which perhaps is something that interests him when he retires.

I suspect it's simply that they didn't want to pay him the extra bucks, when he finally came up for free agency. I think they think they can get pretty much the same value for much less. I think they are wrong.

HoraceClarke66 said...

And yes, Carl, I would trade Judge for Betts—because Betts can stay on the field for a whole season.

But hey, the Sox just re-signed him. Bummer.
