Some Yankee fan blogs - God bless 'em - are already ejaculating over Who's on first - (Luke or DJ?) - or whether I Don't Know - (aka Clarke Schmidt) - can make the rotation. I'm not ready. Surely, it's only a matter of time before I'm waking at 3 a.m., grumbling at the Fates as I shamble to pee, all because Red Thunder still isn't getting ABs. As angry as I will be, I actually yearn for such nights, for such normalcy. But for now, it's premature to start wondering if Gio Urshela is a one-hit wonder. In fact, it just seems wrong.
The rising COVID numbers nationwide - coupled with our lingering rage over the work stoppage - still makes baseball seem irrelevant. Instead of box scores, we have death counts and infection rates, and America is performing like a last-place country. You know things are bad when Greece is being hailed as a model for governmental success. WTF happened to our country's ability to mobilize against an malevolent enemy? It seems as if all we want is a civil war.
It would be nice if baseball could unify us. And regardless of our politics, I'd like to think that IT IS HIGH readers share the bond of a lifetime love for the Yankees, even when it doesn't make sense, even when they don't deserve our blind loyalty. We'll always rally to fight the hated Redsocks, even when their fans are sometimes our closest friends. When you think about it, it's really a wonderful thing. But this year, it will be hard to root for baseball without the sense of being manipulated by soul-less corporations that couldn't care less whether Red Thunder gets his ABs.
Right now, July 24 - aka Opening Day - seems a hundred years away. Between now and then, it's hard to imagine the Yankees NOT suffering a COVID case, or worse, an outbreak. A 60-game season seems like a snapshot, a tournament rather than a pennant race. Still, an outbreak could make last year's injury-riddled Yankees look like a team of Gehrigs and Ripkens. Even if NYC currently looks safe - (we're only now learning how early the flu was attacking Gotham) - - what will it be like when the second wave hits? Will there be a safe way to play baseball in any urban hot spot?
That's the question. It's not whether Gleyber can play SS. It's whether he'll get the chance.

We are in last place in the COVID-19 race, dead last. Apparently, Greece did not elect a dumbass for its leader. Yeah, I hear ya, it's true that we might end up cancelling the season again two weeks in. But I think we've got to take a swing at it. Sitting on our butts going woe is me ain't going to accomplish anything.
