Ho-Seong Kim

Let’s say for a moment that everything we think about Hal is true, well not everything, I mean there is no way he secretly despises the team and sleeps at night in Red Sox pajamas. Right? Right?

But I digress…

Let’s say that everything we think about Hal is true. That he is more about the bucks than the wins. That marketing and ROI weighs into the baseball decisions on par with OPS or WHIP. If that is the case then the next New York Yankee Shortstop is Ho-Seong Kim.

Who is that? I’ll give you some stats in a minute, but the short version is he is a 25-year-old Korean shortstop who is being posted on November 10th.

Think about the Asian market (No not the one where they sell bats on a stick. I think we’ve had enough of that one.)  The Yankees are beloved in Japan. We’ve signed Hideki,  Masahiro, Kuroda, and Ichiro.  And sure, Igawa and Irabu didn’t work out but they were signed. The market is established.

They have made inroads into Taiwan with Chien-Ming Wang .

The only country left where baseball is a big deal and we have yet to sign a player of note is Korea.

Kim hit  28 HRs last year, drove in 103 and had a slash line of .310/.402/.530 and is supposedly a good defender as well.

We all know Gleyber needs to move to second. There’s a lot of noise about trading Luke but even if we don’t and get to re-sign DJ he (DJ) can go back to his original role of super utility man.

Are the Yankees ready to turn shortstop over to a player none of us have ever seen?  No, if you are thinking purely in baseball terms. Are the Yankees ready to turn shortstop over to a Korean superstar? Yes, if you consider marketing, jersey sales, and opening up a broadcast opportunity in Korea.

Pretty soon we might be hearing, “It is High. It is Far. It is Seong!”

It won't happen if it costs Hal money. There will have to be an exodus of payroll first. According to NY Post Sherman, a Hal pet, the will be seeking to get under the salary cap. Apparently, we did not buy enough Spring Training caps, or 4th Of July caps, or LBGQTLMNOP caps this season.
I am slip sliding away.
I am one toke over the line sweet Jesus.

I would definitely have gotten a LBGTQIA cap if one was offered in my size.

Interesting, Doug. But yeah, why would they spend money when they can turn to Tyler Wade?

Yes, I'm sure they will do the least expensive thing.

He's got to cost substantially less than Lindor. So maybe it's a bargain.

I don't know. It caught my eye so I figured I'd share. Plus I'm playing with writing styles and content as I try to figure out this blog thing.

HC66--Are you being sarcastic about Wade? I thought you wanted the Yankees to give their young talent a shot. Wade has never really gotten a fair trial in the majors.

Anon,

Part of the issue is that SS is now considered a position that generates offense. Wade has been in 161 games over four years, and to be fair, not all as a starter and not all in a row, but his WAR over the course of his career is -0.2. So even if he were to play more and be more productive he would never be considered a force.

In the article I read that inspired my post it said, "According to ZiPS, his (Kims) current season would translate to .274/.345/.478 with 29 homers. Going forward, ZiPS projects Kim to be no worse than a 3.5 WAR player over the next five years in the majors."

It's all projection but he's seems better than Wade.

Hal S posting as The Archangel

Doug K.-- The numbers you cite do not represent a reasonable or fair sample of his major league potential for just the reasons you mention: he has never had a serious and prolonged spell of reps at the major league level--so he's always in a situation where he feels that every at-bat will determine his future. It's a totally fucked up way to handle a young player.

You can't assemble shards of fits and starts in the majors, add them up, and compare them to the same amount of reps if allotted on a continual basis over one season. Strictly apples and oranges. You should know better.

If you do an adjustment from his last full AAA season, he clearly has the potential to be a first-rate MLB player if given a shot by someone. The scattered and truncated appearances with the Yankees do not constitute a fair shot.

Anon,

Your point is valid. I take no issue with it. The premise of my post was that marketing and ROI play a role in decision making with the Yankees and are held in equivalence in some cases with talent.

I was writing about a player I came across that would check a marketing box while perhaps (hopefully) have the talent to back it up. I had never heard of him before so I threw it out there.

The only other thing I was replying about is the SS has become a position where offensive potential has become a major factor.

There are a lot of shortstops that can really bring it at the plate and I didn't think that Wade had that kind of talent. Lindor type talent. Seager type talent. Even Didi. Few do. This guy (Kim) projected to 28 HRS etc. in MLB. I don't see Wade doing that.

That said, just postulating.

Doug K. -- Just to reiterate--the best sample from which to judge Wade's potential was his last full AAA season, which shows great promise.

Did you notice that one of the Yankees' best winning stretches this season occurred when all of the team's young talent was on the field for a couple of weeks because of injuries? Frazier, Wade, Andujar, Torres, etc., were playing every day during that stretch. The chemistry and youthful dynamism of THAT team reminded me of the Rays. Until and unless the Yankees have the guts to go in that direction all-out--which will never happen under the stagnant, clueless Steinbrenner-Cashman regime--the Yankees are doomed to perennial disappointment.
