So... Luis Gil has shoulder tightness.
This is bad. This is really bad.
Yesterday, the Death Barge shut down Gil. Today, he'll get an MRI. They're saying nothing more, because - why bother? - nobody believes a word anyway. And everybody knows the implications: Gil - 26 and the reigning Rookie of the Year - was supposed to be a bulwark of the rotation. You don't want your youngest starter to be having an MRI. This is a potential Cat-5.
So... across the Yankiverse today, the name "Marcus Stroman" is going viral. That's because Stroman - assigned by Dean Wormer to Double-Secret Probation - is back to being our 5th starter. For the last six weeks, Cooperstown Cashman has shopped Stroman like a plate of bad liver, seeking to shred the $18 million contract that the Yankees lavished on him last year. Frankly, it's a wonder that two days ago, Cash didn't trade Stroman for some thirtysomething lug nut who peaked in 2019. He held on. I wonder what he knew...
Not much more to say about Gil and Stroman. But if anybody thought the Yankees, heading into spring training, had too many starters, they haven't watched this franchise very long. And if you think Gil will be the only starter to go down in March - Rodon? Schmidt? Cole? Fried? - you know nothing about reverse negative juju - of which the 1st Law states: Never predict anything positive about your team.
Other matters from yesterday...
Cody Bellinger homered. Great. In 2023 he won Comeback Player of the Year. Is it realistic - or right - to hope that he wins another Comeback award? And what does it say that we'd have that conversation?
Also, as much as I like the guy, I cannot shake the fact that the Yankees obtained Bellinger in a straight up deal for Cody Poteet. Yeah, there was cash. But it was Cody for Cody.
Paul Goldschmidt is listed in yesterday's box score as "Goldschm..." WTF? They add a three dot ellipsis rather than finish his name? That ain't right.
Jasson Dominguez didn't play yesterday. I wonder if somebody took him to a secret field and hit him 1,000 flies? More likely, he had the day off and went bowling.
Since being allowed to grow meaningless beards, the Yankees are 3-3 in meaningless games.

I think we all know that Gil will miss most if not all of this season, and will eventually be this era’s version of Chien-Ming Wang ( remember him?) For all their blather and bullshit about their young pitching, there is not one young pitcher ready to step into the rotation. So, yeah it’s Stroman. Next man up ( when Schmidt inevitably goes down) will be Carlos Carrasco. Suddenly the “great” rotation doesn’t look so great, does it? The old saying “You can never have enough pitching” has been proven to be not a cliche, but a cold, hard fact.
Ah, Chien-Ming. A terrific pitcher felled by running the bases. That one was really sad.
Schmidt, by the way, has been battling back tightness or something. He's not a lock. Gil is not a lock. Nestor is a lock, but for Milwaukee (or somewhere out there in the vast redness, where he fits right in).
So we have Cole, Fried, Rodan, and Stroman. Then maybe Warren.
So much for the power of positive thinking.

This whole season will play out for the Dodgers to win the Series again. It’s like those good old days playing Strat-O-Matic baseball…anyone remember that?!? MLB should just save A LOT of shoulders and elbows and just do the playoffs this year. We don’t need 154 or 163 or even a non-sense Covid season.

THAT, Publius, is a great point, and one I have not considered. It's not like the old days, where the actual baseball was the needed tonic and distraction from life. The actual field play is not so hot these days. BUT BUT BUT...the bitching about the eminently bitch-able current Yankee organization, with its cartoon villain owner, it's MAD Magazine GM and its village idiot manager - THAT may help us get through what could otherwise be an intolerable year of actual reality. In all seriousness - THANK YOU for reminding me of that.

Until last year I had never read anything negative about "The Martian" being a shaky fielder. Over the past few days I (randomly?) have seen a number of pundits writing that "The Martian" was always shaky on fielding. WTF? The thing is, if someone has spent their entire life playing baseball but still can't track fly balls, will they ever? I know that some aspects of tracking are teachable, but I'd assume that they have already been taught. Very ominous stuff... Strange that they don't leave him in center field, his "natural position" (whatever the hell that means)... I'm getting a bad feeling about him.

One - we can trade for Soto
Two - we can re sign Verdugo
Three - we can terminate Cashman's contact and kick him out of the stadium
Four - We can re sign Rizzo and have him play third base
Five - We can re sign Josh Donaldson and have him DH
Six - We can have Stanton be our designated pinch runner until his elbows heal
See - we're still in great shape and on top of the baseball world!
