An all-star shortstop and a sharp-tongued TV judge top the list of speakers at commencement ceremonies at Capital Region colleges this spring...

New York Yankees baseball player Derek Jeter is receiving an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Siena College in recognition of his leadership qualities and his charitable work with his Turn 2 Foundation that aims to help at-risk youth.

"Then, he'll be Doctor Jeter," said Linda Richardson, vice president of academic affairs.

Jeter cannot attend the ceremony because the Yankees will be playing the Seattle Mariners on graduation day, May 13. However, he will be taping a video message that will be shown on the large video screen at the Times Union Center. His parents will attend the ceremony and his sister, Sharlee Jeter, will accept the award on his behalf.

Judge Judith Sheindlin, "Judge Judy," will be holding court at the University at Albany's commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. May 20 on the campus's Grand Entry Plaza. About 2,800 students are expected to attend.

"I look forward to returning to Albany to address the Class of 2012," said Sheindlin in a press release. "As a parent of three University at Albany graduates, I can assure the graduating class their UAlbany education will provide a strong foundation for success."
College commencement speakers aren't what they used to be, eh?

It's a damn shame Josh "Judge" Judy can't find a regular major league gig,
