A Matt Holliday blast will launch Sterling into song, either Irving Berlin’s “Happy Holiday” or Perry Como’s “Home for the Holidays.” When a reporter suggested Madonna’s 1983 breakout dance track “Holiday,” Sterling said he hadn’t heard it, but would take a listen and consider it.Go read the whole interview. Cheers to commenter Leinstery for hipping us to this sensational New York Post interview with the Voice of the New York Yankees, John Sterling--or as reporter Dean Balsamini calls him, "The William Shatner of play-by-play." In this groundbreaking piece, John unveils some of the thought processes that go into his signature home run calls even as he composes them before a reporter's eyes. Unprecedented!

"He said his top-five catch-phrases include, 'Robbie Cano, don’cha know?' 'Jorgie juiced one!' (Jorge Posada), sing-song 'The Grandy-man can!' (Curtis Granderson, in reference to the 1972 Sammy Davis Jr. hit 'The Candy Man') and 'Bern, baby, bern!' (Bernie Williams), a lyrical lift from The Trammps 1976 hit, 'Disco Inferno.'
"But the overwhelming fan favorite is 'An A-bomb from A-Rod!'”
Classic Sterling.
Additionally, 'Bern, baby, bern' (Disco Inferno) was adopted in The Stadium after a big hit by Bernie. Some of my favorite memories from the old stadium. The Master's influence extended beyond the broadcast booth.
I SAY IT'S GOING TO BE IRVING BERLIN ON THE HOLLIDAY HOMERS.
