There are many reasons why the Yankees didn't make a deal yesterday. Here are some...
1. Teams like the Rangers (Lance Lynn) demanded the likes of Deivi Garcia and/or Clarke Schmidt, which the Yankees were not going to trade.
2. The veterans being dangled in trades (Lance Lynn) just weren't so enticing.
3. The Yankees expect a wave of players returning from injury, which is akin to making trades.
4. The ownership wasn't ready to absorb more bloated contracts.
And finally, perhaps the most interesting...
They could have questioned whether MLB can still pull off the post-season.
Since the April COVID explosion, NYC has been blessed with relatively low infection rates. But October looms, and cold weather will force more people inside.
Last week's COVID breakout with the Mets - confined to only two cases - sent shivers across the league. Now, as teams fall from the race, it would be a natural response for disappointed players to break quarantine rules. It will be harder, not easier, to keep teams without infections.
Baseball is halfway there. The Yanks have played 33 games, with 27 left to go. Could the ownership have decided it was not worth renting players for what might be a three-week collapse? And would it be wrong?

I think doing nothing was the right thing to do because we suck so bad. There's no trade that'll improve us much. We need an overhaul and this front office has proven it's not up to the task.

We could've dealt away one or two guys as rentals. Too bad El Sweato wouldn't fall into that category again.
Also, it was the right thing not to make a trade since Brain Cashman can't make trades.
And hey, lookie dat: the Marlins stole Starling Marte right out from under the nose of the Brain. I guess it was done "whisper quiet."
I wonder if that will be featured in the Brain's next book.

Agreed. Jody, Jordy Mercer should only be there as an emergency back-up, pinch runner, etc.

In fact, Alphonso and HoraceClarke66--what is the concievable rationale for playing Mercer over Wade? I'm trying to imagine what motivates people like Cashman and Boone, and for the life of me can't think of a good reason to be doing this.

Wade may or may not ever be a bona fide major leaguer. But why not find out, once and for all?
Instead, year after year, this is how the Yankees slowly drain the spirit out of ballplayers. Give them a brief window to try to make it, send them back down, bring them up when someone is hurt—then bring in someone else.
Mercer: obviously not the future. Not even a one-time star who might revive. Why start him?
Wade: could conceivably be something. Why not find out? In a year in which it's all up for grabs anyway.
