Trouble in Paradise? The Yankees have no place for Giancarlo Stanton

Supposedly - let's agree to believe it when we see it - Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge will return this weekend for a Fenway frat house trifecta against the last place, surgically tanking Redsocks.

Theoretically, our two beloved behemoths - their state fair-sized, tightly tuned and highly financed leg muscles having healed - will be ready and raring to go, having played simulated games in Joe Biden's Scranton.

Remember: We'll believe this when we see it.

The addition of Judge and Gio will give the Yankees seven (7) outfielders. The lucky number, one OF for each day of the week: If you're scoring at home, that's Judge, Stanton, Hicks, Gardy, Tauchman, Frazier and Andujar, and we won't count Tyler Wade, who can also patrol the pasture. How they'll all fit is 2020's final Cashmanic paradox, or riddle of the Yankee Sphinx.

For now, let's go with what we know. If Judge is healthy - we'll believe it when, aw, you know - he will play RF, where he is entrenched and, frankly, deserves a Gold Glove. For better or worse, Aaron Hicks will probably stay in center, though he looks better coming off the bus than striding to the plate. And then there is left field - an enigma of hope and mixed opportunities.

At this point, I'd like to indulge a personal bias: I want Clint Frazier in left. He's hitting .280 with 5 HRs. His hits have come in big situations. He hustles; yesterday, his perfect slide into home gave us a huge two-run cushion. Plus, his backstory - losing a year to concussions, being mocked for faulty fielding, persevering through the farm system - makes him one of those rare players - a Pinella or an O'Neill - who might become a lifelong Yankee, even though he started elsewhere. We've watched him evolve. This is my hunt for Red October. (That's a joke. Sorry.)

Will he get the shot? Maybe.

It's hard to imagine Stanton patrolling left. Too much leg stress. He'll probably move into the DH slot, deleting Gary Sanchez's miserable extra at-bats, and endangering Miguel Andujar. Stanton's numbers - frozen since his injury - had been solid: .293 with 3 HRs in 41 at bats. Trouble is, Andujar has finally heated up (.375 this month.) He entered September at .156; he's now .242. How do you sit an emerging talent like that?

Tauchman seems to have fallen back to earth. Still, he's an excellent fielder, steals bases and hits LH. Same with Gardy. One of them may have to go. And everything becomes more complicated if Luke Voit's foot forces him into a DH role. How could you sit the Yankees' best power threat this season?

Well, I dunno. Starting tomorrow, we play three against Toronto. Judge and Stanton will watch from the stands. For the seven-man Yankee outfield, these three games will be a case of musical chairs. Friday or Saturday, the music will stop, and maybe two of the seats will disappear. In the meantime, here's where everything stands:

I thought the Yanks, right now, were in the No. 8 spot because they are, officially, a "wild card" while Houston gets in my virtue of being second in the AL West. Damned if I know...

...But in any case, I think we need an over/under for the number of games that Judge and Stanton will play before they are back on the Ellsbury List.

Personally, I would make it 2 games for Judge, and 1 for Stanton.

But I think it could just as easily be -2 or -1, meaning that they will go down again a game or two BEFORE their scheduled returns.

As for the roster spots, I would say you have to send Ford and either Estrada or Wade to "THE ALTERNATE SITE."

Unless, of course, they can somehow make due with fewer than 15 pitchers...

Horace, you're correct re standings: that chart is posted by record but not by seeding (Yanks are currently 8th).

Gotta send down Ford, right? If Voit gets injured, move DJ to 1B and let Wade play 2B. Improved defense over Ford at 1st, and Wade's speed game can be handy.

I expect the postseason will see even shorter leashes with SPs, so I would prefer as much pitching in the meantime to keep everyone as fresh as possible.

Estrada and Ford have been disappointments this short season. See ya!

And about those pitchers. We currently have 13, but the only one who's expendable is Nelson. The rest are starters and actually legitimate relievers.

But do we need three catchers? To put a point on it, do we need Sanchez? He's a millstone, a whiff machine, a defensive downgrade from either Higgy or Krakatoa. By rights, he should be at the alternate site, trying to figure out his problems. NOT AT THE MAJOR LEAGUE LEVEL WHERE HE IS A DETRIMENT, FFS.

Sorry for shouting. When Green sucked badly last year, he got sent down, worked things out, and came back the Greenie we had known and loved-ish. Doesn't the hype machine allow this for Sanchez? He's embarrassing himself nearly every time he steps to the plate. That can't be good for his psyche and ego. Why don't they invent an injury and let him go figure himself out in private, away from daily TV coverage?

It's a mystery. But the Yankees do have this knack for fucking up young guys by both moves and non-moves just like this.

The over and under on Stanton is 5 times running to first. By the 6th., his semimembraosus will be pulled and he will be out until June, July 2021, pending no rehab setbacks. I did not say, hits or games because simply running to first is an issue for him

A few things...

1) This is not a defense of Gary Sanchez but wow did Baltimore's catcher suck! Seriously, how many balls got by that guy over the course the series. He missed a fastball so badly it almost killed the umpire.

2) Ford is done. (As many of you said. As is Estrada. ) Right now it should be Gio at third with Gleyber, DJ, and Luke. AnDUjar is the DH.

When the behemoths return Stanton, to DH Clint to left. Tauchman to the alternate site (but it really should be Gardy but that's not going to happen.)

3) Over under on injuries... Stanton 4 games. Because striking out is an easy walk back to the bench. Ditto home runs. Judge... just makes me sad. I don't even want to say. I really want him to stay at full strength.

4) Frazier is fine in right. I feel like all of his issues appear when he's in left. I hope I'm wrong.

Duque, remember: all these "moves" and "choices" and "roster spots" and "decisions" are the result of two things, both related.

The first is the team that Herr Cash has assembled, complete with expensive appendages, fragile giants and overpriced retreads.

The second is Señor Cash's ego. To play someone like Clint means admitting that he made other bad decisions that we don't want to acknowledge.

A great manager would play the hottest hands, no matter the consequences or ego blows. Paradoxically, Mister Cash would even end up looking smart if Ma Boone would sit his biggest boners on the bench. Oh shit, I'm melting down. Forget it all. I give up. I have had it.

Bobby Axe buys the Mets.

Now they have an owner who grew up a Met fan, flush with cash and who hates to lose. Maybe this will force Hal to be more aggressive.

Take the Mets in next years Back Page contest.

Rich men's toys. I guess just as it always was. Our rich guy just hordes more. That darn luxury tax. For those who long for socialism, just look at what baseball has become with the luxury tax and competitive balance picks and equal distribution of all national tv contracts. Yes, I know we should be apolitical here, but just saying, C'mon Man, bet you just can't wait to see Pirates vs. Royals. Some of these owners are richer than God, but get competitive balance picks and luxury tax payments. Kinda like China being a "developing nation" in the Paris Climate Accord.

What you’re describing is not close to socialism. You’re talking about crony capitalism. And you’re making zero sense. When you make even less sense than I do, you’re in deep shit.

HoraceClarke66 said...

I agree, Bitty. MLB is a cartel, and always has been.

I don't think full-out socialism is practical, either. But don't get me started on the Paris accords.

The world is in trouble, Archie—or aren't there enough front-page photos of the permanent "Orange Skies Over California" for you?

Is the brutal dictatorship that runs China trying to get away with something? OF COURSE IT IS!

And so what? We're America, we're supposed to lead.

Once upon a time, the strategy would have been to rally the world around such incredible new, carbon-less fuels that China would've had to follow with its tail between its legs. Check out, say, the Marshall Plan in Europe.

Did we say, 'Hey, the Soviets aren't paying their fair share to rebuild Europe?' NO! We said, 'Their idiocy and viciousness is our opportunity,' and won the Cold War.

That's how America used to run. I miss that America.

Please, check out the Marshall plan. We were the only world power left. Primarily because our country remained free for physical devastation and we had virtually unlimited natural resources. We also suffered almost no civilian casualties compared to the rest of the world. We had the only nuclear weapon. We decided to rebuilt the rest of the world instead of conquering it. Although Soviets were on the brink, we allowed them to fence off millions of people rather than continue what would have been more war. the Soviets would have lost because ,although they had many more people to sacrifice, we had the technological advantage.
By our decision to cede Eastern Europe to Stalin, et al., we doomed a generation too servitude. {just ask the Poles and Chechs} If you say we won the Cold War, we did but only after Regan told Gorby to f-off while most of the press said he was a war monger. Soviets collapsed because of lack of materials and oil. We will develop cleaner fuels through our freedoms. Free enterprise has always provided that opportunity in the US. Think of air conditioning and Model-T. We currently have the cleanest air and water since I began studying the subject in the 70's. The nations leading the world in the burning of coal and wood, which are the worst carbon producers are China and India. Try telling the Chinese to follow our example in clean fuel and watch them laugh. Yes, they will say, please continue leading and we will sell you the rope which you can use to hang yourself.
The orange skies are very much caused by the poor forest management which is predominate in the West coast. Plus climate changed pre-Industrial revolution, hence the name Greenland. Vulcanos cause more climate change than our cars. If you really want to help the climate, stop buying anything from China and India and their coal-burning industries.
MLB is the Politburo of sports.

Chinese and India cities today look like LA in the 60's and 70's. We have progressed way beyond that here. There is no reason why either of those countries don't do better. Coal is just cheaper. We could end almost all pollution if we just went hydro and nuclear, but the Left would go bat shit. I know this is a baseball site, but dialogue and discussion matters
