Annual M*A*S*H Champagne Toast Party Turns Ugly After Release Of Super Bowl Nielsen Ratings Estimates

Taking a cue from the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins, the cast of M*A*S*H have uncorked champagne in recent years to celebrate their status as the highest rated program in television history.

The surviving M*A*S*H cast members meet annually to listen to the release of the initial Nielsen ratings estimates for the Super Bowl -- the only event that can rival the record-setting performance of the M*A*S*H series finale in 1983.
Gathered around the hotel suite radio, the cast usually erupts into a joyous cheer when confirmation of their #1 status comes. Not so this year. Early reports indicate that Super Bowl XLIV beat M*A*S*H by .53 million TV sets.

After listening to the report, a dejected Gary Burgoff turned off the radio and the room was totally silent for several minutes until an unsuspecting Jamie Farr entered from the kitchen holding two bottles of expensive bubbly and said, "What's with all the long faces? We're still #1! Aren't we? Colonel Potter?" When Farr's inquiry was met by only more silence, he too knew the news was bad.

That's when the usually happy event turned into a World Class airing of the grievances almost thirty years in the making. Some said that losing the title was inevitable eventually. Others threw spears -- saying that the show's "canned laughter" or the ill-fated spin-off After M*A*S*H were to blame. Others, such as Alan Alda,
inquired into the accuracy of Nielsen ratings to begin with. All the while, a shaken David Ogden Stiers sat in the corner, muttering quietly in the polished Boston accent of Major Charles Winchester III.

EXCLUSIVE: Sculptor Says My Selig Statue "Will Capture The Man As He Lived"

The worlds of arts and baseball collided violently yesterday when news broke that the Milwaukee Brewers will erect a statue of MLB Commissioner Bud Selig outside Miller Park.

"Sculpture and statue have been my life," said Eros Montoya III, a renowned master of bronze and other malleable metals.

"But I can honestly say that I have not lived until learning of the prospect of working on the Selig project. I feel like I am taking my first breaths only now -- like a newborn nestled in a post-delivery plastic basin, recently toweled off by the nurses and staring at the lights."

Eschewing the temptation to memorialize Selig in a neoclassical design, Montoya has chosen to "capture the man as he lived."

In particular, Montoya said his early sketches have focused on Selig as Congressional witness.

"It is a delightful area of inquiry for me, and I wonder what hidden messages the Commissioner transmitted with his index finger? Was this a code for another witness -- such as the Adonis-like slugger Jose Canseco -- to shut up? Or was it just a natural, human response to the dry air in the overcrowded hearing room? Using my hands and tools to try and answer these riddles literally keeps me up at night. It's why I do what I do."

The boilers in our new stadium are corrupt

Probably installed by Toyota.

City Councilman Larry B. Seabrook surrendered to city and federal authorities in Manhattan on Tuesday to face a 13-count indictment accusing him of money laundering, extortion and fraud in a series of schemes that included helping a close associate win a contract to install boilers in the new Yankee Stadium.

Those Wall Streets in the sky boxes? They better bring cans of Sterno, because on those cold nights in April, the heat cannot be trusted.

Jesus Bobblehead to Bless Trenton

Our Trenton Thunder farm organization will bestow on seven former Thunderers the equivalent of a baseball Academy Award: Their Bobblehead Doll Giveaway Day.

Jesus Montero has made the bobblehead cut.

His free bobblehead -- courtesy of Verizon -- event takes place at the season finale on Thursday, September 2 against Dacron (Cleveland Indians). Jesus will be depicted bobbling in his home pinstripe uniform, even though there is a chance he'll have been traded by then for a pitcher to replace Javier Vazquez... or maybe for Johnny Damon.

Other Thunder promotions: Kids Eat Free Mondays, $1 Dog Tuesdays, Wacky Wednesdays, Thirsty Thursdays, Family Fun Fridays, Fireworks Spectacular Saturdays and Kids Rule Sundays.
Thursday looks like Alphonso's best bet.

Anything for Haiti?

This is sick.

New York Times Retracts Unpublished Story about Governor

Breaking _ The New York Times has retracted its still-unpublished expose' that was expected to force New York Gov. David Paterson to resign in disgrace. For days, rumors of the story -- which alleged something done wrong by the governor -- circulated around Albany, causing anticipation that the end was near for Paterson. Today, the governor's office issued a sharp denial of all allegations in the not-yet-printed story, adding that the story has not been published. More news as it happens...

In off-season roster move, Arod adds Cameron Diaz to compete for opening on left testicle

The Yankees may have a new First Baseline First Lady!

Take that, Kate Hudson. Arod is back on the Hollywood prowl and - as long as he doesn't run into Kurt Russell in a back alley - he might be hoisting a couple Golden Globes.

Supposedly, he was glomming onto former Charlie's Angel Cameron Diaz at a Super Bowl celebrity mixer this weekend. Well played! On a bad hair day, (Think: There's Somethng About Mary) this lady can still bring her Shrek voice.

Our new good luck charm?

The River Thames Flows Through our Left Field

Marcus Thames -- who homered off Randy Johnson in his first MLB at bat -- has become yet another homecoming former Yankee, once again undermining previous statements that we were perfectly delighted with our chaotic situation in left field.

Seriously... did I imagine this stuff? Wasn't it the other day when Cashman said he was satisfied with Brett Gardner?
Suddenly, we've put out a casting call for everybody over age 33 who once hit 20 home runs. And let's not forget to use the adding machine here, either.
Remember how they said they had only $2 million for left-field? Well, now they've spent $2 million on Randy Wynn and another $900,000 on Thames. If you add whatever they're paying Jamie Hoffmann, and the next additions -- God knows who it'll be -- we could be back up there in Johnny Damon salary territory by July.

Is Dion James available? Karim Garcia (right)? Rondell? Hello?
Not complaining, mind you. What's done is done. Just wondering... Has Cashman been ahead on this, or is he making it up as he goes along?

If I Can Ask Any Of You To Care About Baseball For Just A Minute, I Think You Ought To Know About Smoov And What He Has To Say

Football and TV commercials, blah blah blah.  But meanwhile, back in the significant world, the world that is this blog's reason for existing, the world of Yankee baseball, part-time Stadium security officer Christopher Johnson, a.k.a. TheSmoov1, tweeted and blogged an exclusive insider scoop about the 2010 season:
With the Yankees' hot stove practically dormant leading up to Spring Training, I figured I pass along this important tidbit I found out on Wednesday during my in-house training at the Stadium:

Backpacks WILL be allowed in the Stadium and everyone is allowed one bag in the Stadium -- regardless of gender.
If you are a Yankee fan -- and if you're not: get out of here, you fucking spy! -- you need to be reading Smoov's blog and his tweets.

Who rock Super Bowl like never before!

There is no more roof at Super Bowl Stadium in Miami today, because the bad boys from Britain last night tore it off, lit fire to it and tossed it into the ocean.

The Who snapped off a white-hot 20-minute set like Lawrence Taylor snapping off Joe Theisman's femur!

From Tommy to Baba O'Reilly, this smokin' band gave those upstarts from Generation X a real taste of hard rockin' jam for a change, and put getting DOWN back into touchdowns!

Who won the game? RIGHT ON, MATTAFUKKA! WHO WON THE GAME!

Dustin Pedroia looks like a scrawny 40-year-old gnome

Here's a stillshot from a Boston Dirt Dogs video of "Skippy" Pedroia working out, which is apparently supposed to psych Redsock fan for the comiing season. Have you ever seen such a shriveled-up shrimp?

If they don't put this guy back on performance enhancing drugs, he might wither away and die. Boston fans have been wondering what happened to that 25 home run/MVP season? Well, take a look at this, and you'll know.

Here's a closeup. Whoa. He looks like Chris Elliot in "Cabin Boy."

Cash grilled by Chinese sportswriters

Yankee greats Randy Levine and Brian Cashman are giving the people of China a chance to see and touch a slice of American liberty: The legendary 2009 MLB trophy.

This week, Cash sat down for a news conference, and the questions -- well -- let's just say sportswriters are the same everywhere!

"If Yankee iron fist death patrol fails secure golden 2010 World Series artifact, due to seizure of assets by Pig Dog ownership, will operative agent Cashman face dismemberment tribunal?"

"Does Yankee dog-camp guard staff plan for new operative Javy Vazquez to suffer humilation, chop-chop, hand in vice service, during physical rendering phase of spring torture camp?"

"Will ex-supreme key death operative Johnny Damon pose deconstruct threat to Yankee pig dog ownership in form of killer-bomb-revenge Tiger or Ray assassin?"

"Can pig dog ownship use iron fist of cheap to smash operatives Lackey, Cameron, Beltre... cow children of Redsock chicken flesh-slaughterer operative Francona?"

Another Message from TV's Glenn Beck: Super Bowl... or Allah Bowl

More from America's Top Everyman:

Friends, something has gone terribly wrong. Do you feel it? I no longer recognize my NFL. The Rams are in St. Louis, the Cardinals are in Arizona, and who are the Jacksonville Jaguars?

I told you about the Marxist imagery in this weekend's Super Bowl... but now I've got to tell you something that will really

blow...
your...
minds!

When the Saints and Colts hit the field, it will be more than a clash of teams. It will be a melding of symbols. Do you understand the implications?

Here is the universal logo of Islam: The star and the crescent.

Now look... LOOK AT THE LOGOS OF THE TEAMS PLAYING SUNDAY.

We’re told to trust players with names like Osi Umenyiora and Antwaan Randle El? How can we? What are they carrying under those shoulder pads? Bombs?

Some of these NFL players have been known to shoot themselves in the foot. I ask you, if a guy is willing to shoot himself in the foot, what else might he do?

Tonight, there is hope – through my 4.1 Project. Yes, America faces Fourth and One, and on that great day of truth -- April first -- we shall gather on the fields across this nation. On that Fourth and One situation, the White House-controlled media wants us to punt. But we will not punt!

We will go for it! We will get that yard! Here’s the NFL phone number, 212-450-2000. Call them! Tell them they’re out of bounds!

An urgent message from TV's Glenn Beck: Super Bowl... or Commie Bowl?

Thoughts from America's Top Everyman:

Friends, the NFL claims to love America. But there is one thing about America that it does not love: Capitalism.

NFL teams share TV money. They share revenues from merchandize. Their central government sets salary caps. Each spring, league czars redistribute wealth through a Marxist system that rewards the poorest teams. The league fixes schedules, so failed members play each other, artificially inflating their value. Under their socialist agenda, every team should go 8-8, every player should dress alike, and every announcer should flutter his arms like Terry Bradshaw.

What else should we expect from franchises, such as the Steelers and Packers... named for trade unions... and a league that denies the fundamental human right of ownership to Mr. Rush Hudson Limbaugh, while turning over its NBC Sunday night product to the pink-panties propaganda of Comrade Keith Olbermann.

Most fans don’t even notice the socialist imagery that will run throughout this so-called Super Bowl. Here’s the logo of the Saints (right), who play in New Orleans, the headquarters of ACORN. It is based on the ancient fleur-de-lis symbol (far right) that helped guide France along its course to socialized medicine. Unbelievable, right?

Now here's the image of the Indianapolis Colts. At first glance, it seems harmless.
OK, now, this is going to make your brain explode. Look at what the NFL is putting forth? LOOK AT WHAT THEY'RE SENDING OUT IN THIS YEAR'S SUPERBOWL!

Hitler underestimated the American people, just as Bill Belicheck underestimated the Giants. But I tell you, we are fed up!

Why is it that whenever our team scores, they call it back for a holding penalty, yet the replays later show nothing! In the same game, everybody in the stadium sees pass interference, but the refs miss it. The message is clear: You will bow. You will obey. You will worship us, your NFL instant replay reviewers.

Here’s the NFL phone number, 212-450-2000.

Call them! Tell them they’re out of bounds!

America, it’s Fourth and One! It’s time to raise the flag, before the refs can throw it! We control the line of scrimmage. We will not just move the chains, we will break free of them!

It is time to dig up Jimmy Hoffa

He was the buried David Ortiz jersey of Giants Stadium.

.

If he's really down there, isn't it time to let him out?

.
"Is it possible that football and soccer players -- not to mention the hundreds of thousands of fans who have visited the stadium for concerts over the years -- have trod near the former union leader?"

Billboard in North Dakota says it all

Why is the world even bothering to consider NOT putting Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds in the Hall, when we are not ACTIVELY putting Roger Maris there?

On tour of China, tributes to Cash, Randy, continue

Get that body goin', CC! (and Joba)

Randy & Cash, touring China, stare down critics of Damon dump

BREAKING _ Brian Cashman (pictured, right) today faced off against Chinese government authorities, who contended that Yankee trade policies are detrimental to the world economy.
.
Cashman defended the team's refusal to sign Johnny Damon and Hideki Matusi, so the Steinbrenner family could bank profits, instead of spending them to boost the economy -- the original intent.
.
NOTE: We apologize for the lack of a link. For some reason, our Chinese GOOGLE page is not refreshing.

Randy, Cash, Wowing 300 million Chinese

Randy Levine and Brian Cashman, thrill the Chinese hordes by pressing the Blackberry-soft hands that waved bah-bye to Hideki and Johnny into some eventually hardening goo, for international posterity.
The Yankee bigs are touring China, apparently -- according to this official YES Government News Agency video -- to promote $19.95 memberships in their Madoffian-pyramid fan club, the Yankees Universe.

Says the delighted video announcer: The Yankees are practically the Johnny Appleseeds of baseball on the other side of the Great Wall. They signed a couple Chinamen, who are still years from the mud-quag of Moosic. They have sent to China "a training manual." (Folks, I swear I'm not kidding; that's what they say, we sent them a training manual.) They also sent baseball equipment, including a pitching machine. Let's hope someone shows them proper way to use the rosin bag!
Also, let's hope the Chinese backroll us. Obviously, the Steinbrenners are stone out of money. A quick $200 million? That's movie money over there. GO GET EM, RANDY! Just don't order "flied lice."

Sporcle.com Asks: Can You Do This?

Freddy Guzman finally runs

Speedy late season Yank lugnut Freddy Guzman -- arguably the greatest base-stealer in minor league history -- has fled Scranton.

Freddie -- our backup Brett in the 2009 Oct-Nov ratings sweeps -- signed with Philadelphia yesterday, ending his swift career as a Bronx Bomber.

Over 8 minor league seasons, Freddy has stolen 443 bases. He's 29, and if he can swipe 40 a year for the Chattanooga Chewchews of the world, who knows: He could steal the record someday.

Late in the season, Cash stole him for a box of Thin Mints and a gift card to Olive Garden. He played in 10 games, stole 4 and was nabbed once.

We activated Freddy against Anaheim. Joe pinch-ran him twice. Both times, fans across the Yankiverse were screaming at their TVs, "RUN, FREDDY, RUN!" Freddy didn't run. Still, what a rush... having a guy on first who scared pitchers shitless.

This year, Brett Gardner might start. (Let's hope!) And let's hope we learned a lesson. Every $200 million team needs a $1.98 spare part like Freddy Guzman. The Torre teams of the late 1990s had Homer Bush. Last year, we had Brett and Freddy.

In between... well... we ran Bubba Crosbys. Nobody yelled, "Run, Bubba, Run!"

If Gardner plays every day, we need that pinch threat. When Jorge or the Nicks get on in the ninth, I'd hate to think we pinch run Frankie Cervelli -- instead of the greatest minor league base stealer in history.

Run, Freddy, run! Hopefully, Cash will keep your number in his roll-a-deck. Somebody will want a gift card to Olive Garden. Hey, they treat you like family!

Up in the Air

Remember that guy Joe Mauer that we were saving our money for next year?

Well, he's not the Yankee catcher of the future, at least until age 35 and knee surgery. Then we'll get him. The Twins reportedly will sign him for 10 years. By then, the penguins will be extinct and Lake Itasca will cover Minnesota anyway -- eliminating the competition for Rochester, NY, as nation's top Rochester.

So that leaves Carl Crawford as the reason we penny-pinched this winter, right?

Let's just hope Tampa isn't 10-games out at the trade deadline, because, we don't have enough Jesus Monteros in the system to outbid the Redsocks -- who, by the way, did not trade any of their prospects this year, because they bought players. Like we did, back when we were The Yankees.

What's brought on this ugly, uppity, sarcastic tone?

The wait. I hate early February. Don't you get the feeling we're not done? Nope: we won't sign Johnny. But Cash-Towers will be watching several situations this spring -- LF, CF, RF, C, DH, bullpen, age of players, health of Arod, attitude of Cano -- more than usual. And unless certain players have great Grapefruit seasons, we're not done.

Seriously. Do you see us hoisting the 2009 World Championship flag, then sending out Jamie Hoffmann to play left field? For that to happen, he better hit in Tampa.

A lot of balls in play. Joe Mauer isn't one of them.
So who will we spend all that money on next December, aside from 37-year-old Jeet and 41-year-old Mariano? How about lakefront property in St. Cloud!

Another Reason Why We Love Bill Buckner

He's wacky!

Speaking at an old timers dinner in Illinois, the conversation obviously shifted to Game 6 and the former Red Sox first baseman's famous error on Mookie Wilson's ground ball in the 1986 World Series against the New York Mets. Buckner's first thought after it happened?

"My first thought when it happened was, 'Wow, I get to play in a seventh game of a World Series. How cool is that? And my other thought was how bad the people in Chicago must feel, Boston being here and their team not."

Randy Levine Furious That K11 Mall Has No Orange Julius®, Considering Boycott Of Unfamiliar Gelato Shop

New York Yankees team president Randy Levine (pictured above during the meeting in question) was incredulous earlier today when staff informed him that Hong Kong's K11 mall does not have an Orange Julius®.

Sources indicate that the Yankees World Series Trophy Asia Tour itinerary planning session went south after Levine patted another attendee on the back with a couple gentle slaps and said, "man, I can't wait to get me an Orange Julius® when we're at that mall in China. I haven't had an Orange Julius® since like '82. I used to love that stuff!"

The task of breaking the bad news fell to a nervous Brian Cashman, who reportedly cleared his throat like a boy who didn't know the answer in math class before telling Levine that "there, uh...there...is no Orange Julius® -- but I understand that the Gourmet Tower has a
gelato shop..."

Feeling as if he were naked in the middle of River Avenue, Cashman then looked around the drafty hotel conference room for some support -- any kind of support -- but the only cover besides a nervous cough and the creaks of a shifting chair or two was a quiet "yeah, gelato is awesome..." from director of Pacific Rim Operations George Rose.

Insiders say that Levine stormed from the session with a curt "meeting fucking adjourned!" when Rose later admitted that he in fact had never eaten at Cool Gelato, but that he'd heard from people all across the Pacific Rim that it was really good.

Question: Is Cashman a weanie?

Normally, we at IT IS HIGH try to avoid scatological discussions, which lower the quality of analysis we seek to render.
But in recent weeks, we have seen Yankee G.M. Brian Cashman take a hardline stance against spending, presumably to save his measily little butt from the scorn of in-house accountants.
Don't get this wrong. We like Cash. They wouldn't be the Yankees without him. The last thing we want is some Adam Lambert-as-Zorro-wannabee like Theo Epstein running our Yankees. But seriously... Look at him.
Is Cash a weanie?
The sad answer is: Quite possibly. Look at those glasses. OK, this picture is out of date. But it doesn't matter. Glasses are the glasses. If we was a weanie then, he's a weanie now. Do you not become a weanie because of new glasses? No. In fact, you're more a weanie for changing them.
And the pose? Weanie. Can anybody look at this picture without thinking, "Weanie?"
Last winter, when he was signing free agents, nobody would think weanie. Perhaps our view was clouded money. This year, he's holding the line on spending. But not on weaniehood.

10 Reasons We Should Worry

1. In Japan, we're now known as "the team of Kei Igawa."

2. Next year, Mariano is 40, Andy and Jorge are 38, and Jeet is 36.

3. Curtis Granderson can't hit lefties, neither can Randy Winn. With Nick Johnson, Robbie and Gardner, we're top-heavy from that side.

4. We still don't know what to expect from Hughes and Joba.

5. In the playoffs, our bridge to Mariano was... Mariano.

6. Phil Coke is gone. Evidently, we're expecting Damaso Marte to pitch all season.

7. Now that they've won a ring for their dad, the Steinbrenner heirs and heiresses seem inclined to bank the profits. Would George, in the face of Boston's spending, have let Damon go? What if, in the long run, Hank and Hal turn into billionaire pennypinchers like the Pohlad family of Minnesota?

8. Boston has six starters -- Beckett, Dice K, Lackey, Wakefield, Buchholtz, Lester -- which means they can trade for anybody they need.

9. Javier Vazquez isn't in the National League anymore.

10. The batter protecting Arod in the order is...?
