For you, Duque, a toast - - even I, normally not much of a drinker, promise to hoist one in your honor today. Happiest possible birthday, and many more to come, for my favorite blogger. Without your leadership, this would be just another baseball blog, missing most of the cultural references, the best quips & puns, the veiled political barbs, and everything else that makes this blog so special.

May you blog forever - - the Yankiverse would be so much poorer without your poetic prose.

Now, for your sake, I hope the "old" Tanaka - - pre '14 - - shows up tonight, and gives all of us in the Yankiverse something to cheer.

For your present, pick your top three from Fonz's list of wishes - - and let's all conjure some vibes to make it so - - and put us ahead of Voldemort and the Bums.

I'll take a first baseman and call it a success.

For your birthday, I wish on you receipt of a huge Fed Ex box. Yuuuuge bow.

When you unwrap it, you'll find in it Clippard, Headley, Carter, Tanaka, Holder, and (since he's got nothing else better to do) Brigadoon. Ellsbury and Bird, too.

Better they spend (mucho) time with you than in any NYY games.....

It appears day drinking has been authorized.

Happy bidet, Duque! Hope you enjoy it in the wood-fired hot tub, you mountain man.

So -- maybe a few clutch hits would make a nice birthday gift. And more win warbles too.

We love you Duque!

Whew, Duque, I'm glad you're not a greedy person - - I neglected to mention that if you picked three new starters, or three new bullpen pieces, it might take a few MORE of your birthdays to accomplish that (but then, you already knew that, I'm sure).
My compliments for choosing my fave wish outta' that list: Oh, for a new Donnie Baseball !! Or Moose Skowron!! Ol' #23, or Ol' #14....(current incarnation wanted, of course).

A LBJ: Eso Es, Amigo! Los Calcetines Rojos son Hijos del Diablo - - y Gran Papi es un hijo de la jeringa. (and I envy you those diacritical marks, man)

When that FedEx pkg. arrives, Duque, throw them a yuuuuuuge par-tay - - but remember to keep plenty of tomato juice on hand, in case the dog spots a skunk in the bunch!

P.S. Current incarnation of Gehrig might do in a pinch, as well. LB (No J)

HEY SORRY I'M LATE!....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE CREATOR OF THIS MAGICAL, MENAGERIE OF MADNESS THAT IS THIS BLOG.

Nice way to start the new year. Walkoff style. And Suzyn predicted right yesterday with her mentioning the Japanese duel with Yu might get Tanaka going again.

And boy, if the Master ever threw a birthday warble.......

When Chris Carter came up in the 10th, John and Suzyn were pretty much questioning why no one was pinch hitting for him. I bet he was thinking the two possible options might hit into a double play, Carter will just strikeout. Anyways, happy birthday Duque

Urban Farmer formerly known as DutchFan said...

This was an unexpected canny move by Joe. He knew full well Carter would strikeout, so there was no fear of a double play. On the bench were Romine and Williams, not your certainties when it comes to clutch hitting.

Or am I giving credit where none is due.......

Considering that by the time Urban Farmer left his comment, Carter had already been DFA'd, I'd say he needs to have have his hindsight checked.

And/or install a Yankees DFA alert.

How the heck did you get the NYYs to DFA Carter as a birthday present?

Parson Tom said...

I pounded a couple of beers for El Duque last night, as instructed. They were good and the Yankees won. Everybody's a winner on El Duque's birthday .... except Chris Carter.

I'm sorry I missed your birthday, Duque. But I was busy getting plastered and wasn't online. Now I know why I was getting plastered.

Hope it was a great day. It sure was a great game.
