David Wells: The Voice of Crackdown

What in the name of Cheech Marin is it about old farts who -- once the spotlight fades from their roguish careers -- try to reinvent themselves as hardasses?

Latest example: David Wells wants players banned from baseball after one failed steroids test.

For a moment, let's forget the steroids abuse part, which is playing to the bleachers. Everybody opposes steroids. That's like Springsteen mentioning "Jersey." Automatic cheer.

Think about the one infraction part of Wells' long-awaited legal opinion. Let's mull this question:

If baseball had such Draconian rules, the unforgiving kind that ban players after one infraction, how long would Wells have pitched?

Or if the MLB administered breathalyzer tests before games..

Anyway, where's Alphonso been at? I need some love from the cabana.

Wells > Sterling.

I vote Wells as his replacement. Book it.

Wells has always profoundly cultivated and enjoyed his reputation as a blowhard. If he said something rational, there'd be the risk no one would notice.

Alphonso just got released from a safe house in Milwaukee.

He'll be back on the air soon enough.
