This New Kid, Montgomery, Could Be Decent, If Only.....

Overtime I watch Montgomery pitch and listen to the endless praise ( second hand smoke, passed along by the voice over people covering the game ), I have high hopes.

He is young, lefty and tall.

Okay, if baseball did not require anything more of its best starting pitchers, we could all have a Julep and relax.

What this kid is lacking is the following:

1.  He only has two pitches;  slow and slower.

2.  His command is terrible ( he is usually pushing his 100th pitch somewhere in the fourth inning ).

3.  He gives up a three run homer every game.

4.  He has no " out" pitch.

Other than that, we are blessed.  He is on a track to be a solid .500 pitcher, in a really good year.

I say this;  if he doesn't, "see the light," in his next outing, and give us a solid 7 innings with no more than one run ( unearned ), he needs to start working out at first base.

We are getting under five innings per game from him, and we are always training by 4-6 runs when he departs.

He sucks.

"He's young. Give him time." Like Severino and Hicks.

Severino, by the way, is not giving me confidence tonight. He's keeping the horrid Rays in check, but still looks like a struggled. But what great stuff.

Of course, he is very young. Anything is possible. But his pitch count is horrendous.

They can't all come up from the minors and be Trout, I guess. Even Bernie took a while.

Patience is a virtue. And half of the obscure 50s recording duo Patience and Prudence.

Agree 100% Alphonso. It's painful to watch him pitch. Strikes out the first two batters, then loses the strike zone for the next three innings and gives up a three run bomb along the way. By the time he has 2 outs in the 4th his pitch count is at 85. And his pitches, yeah they're so difficult to pick up because they all look the same. An 89 mph fastball, an 85 mph changeup, and an 87 mph curveball that has no break.

TAKE IT EASY GUYS....HE'S 24....HE HASN'T EVEN HAD A FULL SEASON OF TRIPLE A.....HE STEPPED RIGHT INTO THE ROTATION, AND WE PRETTY MUCH HAVE BEEN IN JUST ABOUT EVERY GAME HE HAS PITCHED IN....HE JUST HAS TO KEEP US IN THE GAME....WE HAVEN'T HIT FOR HIM IN THE LAST COUPLE GAMES HE'S STARTED, THAT WOULD HELP.... HE ONLY GOES 5 INNINGS YOU SAY?...WHO DOESN'T?..... JUST KEEP US IN THE GAME..... I STILL RATHER HAVE HIM START THAN CC.....WOULDN'T YOU?

Amen, All-Caps.

The thing is, ALL CAPS, he is supposed to show some progress.

He is supposed to stun us, at least once, with a brilliant outing. Go 8 innings, give up 3 hits, and a single run. Strike out 7 and walk no one.

He has not done that. There are pitchers in the league, just as young, who have done much better. And done so more consistently.

I used to look forward to watching this new " Andy Petitte clone " mound silhouette only ) pitch. Now I dread another predictable, 95 pitch effort, through 4 innings and change. Where he leaves us down 4 runs. And all of those runs come with 2 out and no one on. He can't get important outs.

This is a guy who should try first base.

He is steering this ocean liner toward a .500 record.
