So now I learn that the White Sox have two pitchers we can't beat, and we know Tampa has at least one.
Cleveland is reputed to have another two or three.
My point is; I thought we were buying the best pitcher in baseball, particularly with Verlander out with an injury.
The price we ( ownership) paid was for the "top of the line" Rolls Royce, not the "top of the
line" Cadillac.
All of a sudden we have another 6 inning, 4-5 run wonder ( with 2 HRs, usually).
And our "5 run +" offense is sitting in the injury ward.
What a plan.

There's no guarantee with any free agent signing. While I was glad they signed Cole, my thoughts were somewhat tempered in that we had a new pitching coach coming in, because our old pitching coach was dreadful, and I have practically zero confidence in the club's ability to hire good coaches. Not that I blame our pitching coach for Cole's problems. Cole is simply not sharp. Not getting it done right now. Giving out dingers faster than the Good Humor Man gives out ice cream cones on a hot summer's day. Perhaps the pressure of being the ace on this injury ravaged staff is getting to him. Perhaps it's just the Cashman jinx, with almost every new pitcher coming here seeming to underperform on a colossal scale. I sure hope Cole doesn't turn into Sunny Gray.

There are many pitchers that we can't hit; they're all over the league. We couldn't hit Cole either. Doesn't mean that other teams can't hit these guys. Somebody obviously hits 'em. Tyler Glasnow doesn't have a 0.00 ERA does he? There's another guy on on the Rays that we can't hit, a lefty who won the AL Cy Young in 2018, Blake Snell. And strangely, Aaron Judge can't even touch him. For that matter, we can't hit the entire Tampa Bay bullpen either. Even if, by some miracle, we score a few runs off their starter, in comes the Rays relievers, and that's the end of our scoring for that day.

I blame the pitching coach, and I don't even know who he is.
I was all for the Cole signing, and still am. Hey, it's not my money, and he was worth the risk. But remember our mantra:
"Nobody gets better. Everybody gets injured."
I would give you even odds that Cole's "minor" injury will be announced in the next couple days. No biggie. He'll just miss a start—or three weeks. Or he'll be shut down until the spring...
Look, when every single promising player we acquire or even bring up gets hurt and/or quickly moves backward, it's got to be the fault of the organization. Obviously, we don't have people who know how to deal properly with injuries or guys getting out of whack.
Obviously, there are people in baseball who do, and people who are willing and able to hire them.
It's that simple.
@Hoss...the Yanks will be headed for a similar future like the Rays and Red Sox. They will can Cashman, get an executive like Chaim Bloom and build like them...I think it's inevitable...teams can't have these payrolls any longer and with no fans in the seats for quite sometime (I don't think next year either), it's going to be a financial foregone conclusion. Baseball is no fun any longer...strategies based on metrics, boring games, fake crowd track...I can't even throw a hot dog off the scoreboard and have it come back to me...smh.
Ach, ranger, if I could only remember the first time I heard Cashman talk about rebuilding through the farm system. I think it was sometime around 2007, but all things Cashie tend to run together.
Sadly, I think the Yanks will have to run into losing seasons and red ink for sometime before Hal will give up on Coops, so deeply has he ingratiated himself into the House of Steinbrenner, rather like a burrowing parasite.
I would think that baseball would look to change things, too. But if you'll notice, all sports seem to run on these sorts of "efficiency" metrics. Frankly, I thought pro football was more interesting when it wasn't just a passing game, and the same for basketball, before it was all three-pointers and slam dunks.
Thing is, the speed and physicality of those games is such that they remain entertaining to most. Not so much in baseball. Will owners realize this is why their profits are steadily melting? Only after they try everything else first: ads on the uniforms and the field, some of the "innovations" we are seeing this Covid season, etc.
Or maybe it's more like the frog in the boiling water, and they won't notice at all, until...
Hey they finally won a game! Throw at some more heads tomorrow.
Oh, baby, I love it!
Imagine how different things would have been if we had retaliated more against the Red Sox years ago.
I find it amazing how few star players the team has produced over the past twenty years. Aaron Judge, a great player and then the very underrated Brett Gardner. We've seen what Sanchez and Severino CAN do, but neither player are guys that you depend on year to year. This ultimately has to lie at Cashman's feet. Right?
I just read that MLB.com ranked the Yankees farm system as the nineteenth best. Nineteenth!!!! After all the money spent on "top" Latin talent, the money spent on scouting, instructors, coaches, coordinators, checkers, state of the art facilities, etc and that's it???!!!!
Kevin, why I do agree with almost all of your piercing comments, Take heart in the farm system. MLB and most ranking systems don't really factor in A-ball or Dom. Summer League because they have never seen them. They throw in guys like "the Martian" because of all the scout babble. I am somewhat of a MILB geek and our farm is better than they rate it.
Anonymous, I appreciate your thoughts. I sure hope you're right instead of me!
@ Hoss, I remember the Red Sox threw at Hideki Matsui's head and dusted him in the infamous 2004 playoff series. That was the moment that series changed, completely turned around. The Yankees stopped hitting and no Yankee pitcher ever responded by dusting a Red Sox player. And we blew a 3 games to none lead, which was a MLB record that is still unmatched today.
