There will be a time to discuss the failure of 2019. Today, I got nothing.

So, how's the weather where you are? Someone told me there's a tropical storm making its way across Georgia. That should really be something. Tropical storms can do a lot of damage. If you're going out, don't forget to take an umbrella. I can't tell you the name of the storm... maybe, Aroldis? NO, NOT THAT! Something else...

Have you seen the new fall TV shows? I hear they're really something. Do any stand out? I've got time to kill. Have any of you seen Succession? It's about the billionaire kids of a super-rich family, jostling for control of a worldwide conglomerate. I think their names are Hal, Hank, Jenif - NOOOO.

Maybe I should get a cat. I could write about the funny things it does. You could comment about your cat, and the funny things they do Every now and then I could post cute pictures of our cats. That would be really something. We could name the blog cat... um... Gary? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

There are all sorts of things to do. Book club? Ballroom dance lessons? Have any of you tried goat yoga? I know a goat. His name is Giancarl-NOOOOOOOOO.

Excuse me. I'm going back to bed. Last night, I couldn't sleep. Nothing but bad dreams. I kept finding myself on a sinking boat. The captain didn't know what to do. I've had that dream many times. It's really something. Me? I got nothing.

Ok imagine you are made general manager of the Yankess with immediate effect.

You have the power to hire and fire anyone.

Now within reason the budget for players is the same around the first level of luxury tax

You can just say trade Stanton for anyone it has to be one that would make sense in reality not ones you could do in a computer game

What would you do?

Me the very first thing I would do would be to have a total overhaul of the strength and conditioning coaching at every level of the club there seems to be a ridiculous number of injuries at every level

I would break with tradition and give minor league players a decent living wage I hear horror stories of how little money they get and I dont see how an extra million dollars or so would be missed from the overall budget you have to have players who have enough money to live on so you can get the best of their potential.

The minor leagues are as far as I can see the only place where the Yankees can spend money without any penalty we should have the best coaches and facilities so young talented players have the best possible chance of making the major leagues or as trade for other players.

I would play players on merit not reputation the jersey is theirs to keep as long as they are playing well you have to earn a place in the team not be given one because you have a huge bloated contract

I would try very hard to get a proper ace for the pitching staff be it free agent or a trade I feel we have had decent solid starters who can pitch like an ace but they are not consistant enough to be an ace if I am making sense?

Hope this doesnt annoy everyone remember I have never been to an MLB game in my life and I live in a country with as far as I know has 1 baseball field.

Despite the sadness of this day, I would like to say this is my favorite Yankee blog because you guys are great at saying what needs to be said, and right on! And fun too (love the poetry). Thank you all very much.

Didi, EE, Sanchez, Stanton did not get us where we got. Why were they in there so much the last few weeks?

Why was Chap being rested for the whole month of September? Somebody just told me he pitched four innings on the month. Is that possible?

Why do our pitchers turn into turds once they get into the hands of Larry Shitfuck?

Why do our batters melt into puddles of diarrhea when they put on the pinstripes? Should Gardy's juiced-up 28 homers have earned him a spot batting third?

Why must we persist in the insane and irrational believe that we have a decent rotation. It's now Tanaka - bad arm and all, then a highly questionable Sevy, a change the Domingo can repeat after an almost certain 50 game suspension, Jordan WHO? and then what? Sapp and Maple? Sure, no problem The line out of the brain trust will be that we don't have room for a new stud.

I'm right now in favor of cleaning house. Cleaning house along the lines of "a flood is going to come and wash away all this scum" kind of cleaning house. Will it happen? No, because that would mean that Cashman has to admit he made some mistakes and he is incapable of that. I have always felt that one hallmark of higher intelligence is the ability to admit when you fucked up or when you are wrong. Brian is a moron and, the constant refrain to that line - Hal does not care.

I'll be popping in here - and pooping in here, for that matter - every day. There is no offseason. This offseason, we need to have a long heart-to-heart with the Juju gods and straighten shit out with the universe. Maybe we need to do that now, rather than during the season.

You see, it's not just a decade. I'm starting to see this as a fifteen-year desert. 2009 was a nice blip, but we have sucked for a long time, since the remnants of the team that Stick and Bob assembled began to fade, since Brian washed up on our filthy shores from the sewage canal that birthed him. Brian has to go. When we does, we'll win again. Will we be alive when that happens? Probably not, but I'm a Yankee fan forever.

No NBA, NFL for me anymore, but I'll stick with the Schmuckeroonies forever.

See you all around the ranch. Go Nats.

The failure in the last series boils down to whoever decided that it would be good to put CC and Mikey on the postseason roster.

Anyone who advocated that should be fired. Then drawn and quartered. Then hung, and not in the blazing saddles way. Then guillotined. Then poisoned (shove it down their windpipe). Then fed to the rats under the stadium bleachers. Then they should have even more bad shit happen to them.

Anyone who doesn't advocate trading ICS in the offseason should be included in the above treatment.

Someone should also break into Otto's apartment and find those pictures he has of Boner with the midget transvestite hooker, because they have to exist. Otherwise why the fuck would he have put him in after the September he had?

Scottish,

Eventually I'm gong to do a long version of what you suggest but right now, like Duque, I'm fried.

Rufus, those are all a thoughtful and measured, even restrained response to things. I hope we have more constructive criticism coming.

I now have to get back to the self-criticism session here at the camp.

MESSAGE TO HAL.

WE ARE STILL "NOT" A CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER TEAM.

GLARING STANDOUTS ON THIS LATEST DEBACLE?

#1.) NO ONE CAN HIT IN THE CLUTCH. (INCLUDES JUDGE, SANCHEZ, GLEYBER, DIDI, EVERYONE EXCEPT MAYBE LAMAHIUE).

#2.) ONCE AGAIN, WAY TOO MANY STRIKEOUTS ESPECIALLY WITH RISP.

#3.) OUR CONSTANT FAILURE TO GO FROM 1ST TO 3RD ON A SINGLE.

#4.) NOT ENOUGH LINEUP BALANCE. (TOO MANY RIGHT HANDED HITTERS, RESULTING IN SLIDERS AND STRIKEOUTS GALORE).

#4.) OUR COACHING STAFF.

ABOUT #5, I NOTICED THEIR PITCHING COACH, BRENT STROM, WALKING UP TO THEIR PITCHER, IN THE DUGOUT, INTENTLY POINTING OUT WHAT HE NEEDED TO DO TO REPEAT HIS DELIVERY TIME AND TIME AGAIN. SHOWING THE PITCHER HOW HE SHOULD BE HOLDING HIS HANDS, THEN TOUCHING THE PITCHERS NOSE AS IF HE WAS GIVING HIM A TIP ON HOW TO RESET HIMSELF.

THEN I LOOK AT LARRY ROTHSCHILD.

HE STANDS NEXT TO BOONE AND LOOKS LIKE A CHAIN SMOKING BABOON WITH A HAT ON.

HINCH AND HIS MOVES, SEEMED SO CRISP, DECISIVE AND CORRECT.

BOONE LOOKED FRAZZLED, SLIGHTLY PERTURBED, AND COULDN'T SEEM TO STAY AWAY FROM OTTAVINO. (I STILL LIKE BOONE MUCH MORE THAN GIRARDI).

ONCE AGAIN, OUR HITTING COACHES HAD NO SAY OR NO POWER TO TELL OUR HITTERS TO STOP SWINGING FOR THE FENCES EVERY TIME UP.

ENCARNACION, SANCHEZ, AND GLEYBER IN PARTICULAR WERE SWINGING LIKE MANIACS EVERY TIME UP WITH RUNNERS ON BASE OR NOT, TO NO AVAIL.

UNLESS THEORIES AND THINGS CHANGE, IT'S GOING TO BE LIKE THIS FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS.

PLAYOFF PURGATORY.

In our case, the owner of the boat could have hired a guy to help the captain. A guy with a Smith Brothers beard who knows EXACTLY what to do. A guy whose salary would have been a fraction of the cost of the entire boat.

But our owner didn't hire this guy who could have helped.

Last night, the boat sank.

Sweet dreams, everyone.

SORRY FOR THE TYPE-O ON THE 2ND #4...IT SHOULD BE #5.

I'M A MESS AFTER THIS SERIES AS WE ALL ARE.

I’ll just say I hope Rolaids walks away. The major leagues have caught up with his 103 mph fastball. He can’t help us in the postseason any longer. I have lots more but that is for another day.

Great comments, everybody. But the bottom line is this:

The New York Yankees tried to win a World Series with two starting pitchers. I don't mean only two really good starting pitchers, or two guys who could go long. Just two pitchers. Period!

Valiant as Severino's comeback was, he could only go four innings at most. Sure, they got sandbagged with the whole German thing. But let's face it: this was a rookie with a 4.03 ERA who threw fewer than 150 innings.

(And I didn't hear a peep of protest out of our organization. Meaning either they didn't care about getting Domingo his day in court, or they knew some things about him they should have dealt with before.)

This eventually flattened the bullpen, which was supposed to throw a bullpen game every series AND provide another 5-6 innings of shutdown relief every other game, against the best hitting teams in baseball.

It was an impossible burden, ultimately.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Yes, the instruction and the training techniques (whatever they are), were abominable. Rothschild and the hitting coaches should go, and I await with bated breath Cashman's fearless report on how it is we could possibly have 300 injuries in the same season.

I would also tear out most of this organization, root and branch.

But this is Cashman's organization, so that won't happen, and Cashman won't be replaced because he's doing exactly what HAL wants.

Hence, we'll continue to play season after season like the Rays or the A's, as someone remarked, happy just to make the playoffs, eagerly embracing "openers," and cheap pick-ups, and trying to squeeze impossible amounts of production out of the algorithms. Refusing to ever admit that that all comes to naught in the playoffs.

HoraceClarke66 said...

This seems to me as essentially un-New York—as an essential betrayal of the idea that here is where you come to see the biggest and best.

Sadly, I don't think anyone cares about that anymore, in baseball or anything else.

Everyone has found it easier to make money in ways other than trying to be the very best, and making money is their only objective.

Before each playoff game, Fox and "MLB," those two awful, corporate entities, kept running old black-and-white clips of games, with a voiceover that told us, "They say that baseball isn't what it used to be. They're right. It's better, faster..." etc.

It may be that, but it's also duller, stupider, more one-dimensional and, let's face it, less competitive.

"Back in the day," by which I mean until about 15 years ago or so (I think ALL-CAPS is right about that timeline), no player could ever have got away with saying, "Yes, I want to be on the postseason roster, but I don't know if I can play."

The idea that your New York Yankees would play a postseason seriously shorthanded is staggering. But there it was.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Scotland, far from being annoying, your comments are spot on.

Descriptions of the minor leagues are always full of endless bus trips, with young players trying to grab sleep or junk food wherever they may.

It's ridiculous—especially now that the minors have little to do with the size of the towns they're in. Both New York team,s for instance, have only their low Single-A teams in Staten Island and Coney Island, respectively.

Why? Why not have the Triple-A teams here, where they would draw more fans, and from where players could get to the big clubs as easily as possible?

Why not have all the minor-league clubs for all the teams clustered as close as possible around each of the major-league team's city? And when or if that's not possible, why not spring for an occasional charter flight, or at least seats on a plane, not to mention ways of ensuring everybody gets a decent meal?

HoraceClarke66 said...

And as it happens, MLB is in fact talking about a major revamping of the minor leagues.

BUT, they're not interested in any of your or my practical, sensible ideas.

Instead, they're talking about cutting the draft in half, and just stuffing hundreds of players in a "Dream League," where they could pursue their dreams of playing in the majors with even less money and less connections to the major-league teams, in hopes of somehow making it.

In other words: dilute your product once again and alienate all the workers in it all the more, in order to save a little more from what's already a tiny sliver of your yearly expenses.

American capitalists, everywhere, are now simply demented with greed.

Everything is broken and none of it will be fixed. This is a treadmill we will not get off, possibly in my lifetime. The failure is systemic on every level. We all know things to do that could likely fix the situation, but none of it will happen. The biggest heads that need to roll are at the head of baseball and the Yankees. They won't go to the guillotine voluntarily.

Interesting points, Hoss, and the "un-New York" thing really rings.

Has Hal ever been a New Yorker? Where does he live, Florida?

We know that Cashman lives in Connecticut. Does either of them have skin in the game?

It's a business and, despite our broken hearts and the lack of a ring, business is good, isn't it?

They're like the guy who keeps screaming "There is no Santa Claus" at the little kid.

The Astros certainly have better starting pitching than the Yankees. But despite that, overall, the Yankees had a better ERA and less runs given up than the Astros. In this series, their pitching was not the difference. It was the Astros clutch hitting. The Yankees left so many runners on base because they couldn't get that single with the bases loaded (several times in games 2-6). Hell, they couldn't even get a Sac fly or a timely rbi groundout. Had the Yankees, say had one hit with runners on in those games 2-6, we would have won in 6. But as most here prophesied , as soon as Stanton, Sanchez and Encarnacion were reinstated into the lineup in the last week, untimely and constant strikeouts would ensue. The Yankees had too little left-handed batters and I'd bet Ford would have come through with at least one needed base hit.

I agree Stanton should be traded. Perhaps a team like the Dodgers. But NY would have to eat 7-10 million per year depending on whether they have to take on another underperforming high salary player. Probably still cost-effective. What MLB needs is what the NHL has: up to 2 contract buyouts per year. But unlike the NHL, a lower percentage of the average contract value would be applied to dead space on the salary cap. The MLBPA might not completely like the buyout concept but since a team could cut a Stanton type for a small portion of remaining salary, it would aid in getting back to the longer contract years the players crave.

As far as Sanchez, he's the same dumb shit stubborn batter and deficiently defensive catcher but who would replace him. Surely not Romine or Iggy full-time. The Yankees had a chance a year ago to trade him for Realmuto and they fucked it up.

Encarnacion wont be retained at his 20 million dollar option and good riddance to him and hopefully Gardner although I do like his personality and effort. But it's time to move on. With Gleyber and DJ, there is no room for Didi at a high salary especially if you want to put in the best players on defense. At first, use Andujar. His footwork at third is bad but he should be a good defensive 1B and hit a ton. Don't be surprised if the Yankees also re-sign Greg Bird and Trade Ford in a package for pitching.

Let Chapstick opt out and use Britton as the closer. Use the savings to sign a decent late-inning reliever and for other needs.
