From DickAllen: THE WAGER

From DickAllen...

Many of you may not know this, but Carl and I started a bet many moons ago. He believed Sevy would come back and make at least two starts in September, a prospect I scoffed at.

Then came the wager.

A case of beer on the line.

Then Carl generously (knowing full well that he would lose the bet) opened up the wager to a broader audience (since all of you are considered, at least to some degree, broad-minded) with an added stipulation: whoever can predict the number of Yankees wins would get both cases of beer and then some (apparently Carl owns a brewery or at least knows a way in through the back door at night).

So, here is the open thread on the bet: the Yankees are currently 76-52 which means there are 33 games left to play, not including today's game. Anyone on this blog may guess the number going forward, providing your guess is in the books before the start of tomorrow's game and it must be posted in this thread ONLY.

If there is a tie (which I fully expect) please add a second number to your guess: add in the number of runs you think the Yankees will score over the remaining 34 games. Whoever comes closest to that number, gets the suds.

Carl, am I forgetting anything? Anything you'd like to add to this?

No, I am not drunk at 10 in the morning on a Sunday.

97 and 170. And I'd still like to know where we are with that original challenge--number of wins in remaining games. I think there were 48 left at the time, but won't swear to it.

I know JM - but the idea was scattered over several threads and got completely unmanageable, so I made an executive decision to put it all in one place - it’s just easier to keep track of this way.

Hey, Scottish, is it 90 or 89 wins?

I did some digging in past posts. The original challenge was for number of wins in 47 remaining games, starting August 14.

Fortuitous timing. We are 13-1 since.

Here are the original predictions:

Jack 20
Win 23
Hoss 24
Ken 25
Carl 30
JM 32

We have 33 left to play counting today. I'll go out on a limb and say Carl and I have a decent shot. At least, right now.

We have 3 with the Angels, 6 with the O's, 7 with Toronto (ugh), 1 with Minny, 3 with the Mets, 3 each with Cleveland, Texas and Boston, then those last 3 games of the season against the Rays. At least those games are at the Stadium.

Roughly half our remaining games are against Il Pomadoro, O's, Minny, Angels and Texas. The Guardians are struggling to be .500, so maybe them, too.

I thought I had to put down 2 predictions for wins got a bit mixed up

90 wins are my total though I'm a miserable dour bugger and always think the worst hopefully its a lot more

JM, Carl and I, for obvious reasons, are not participating in the bet. We have both agreed to pay up regardless of Sevy’s status this year.

As to the previous numbers, I’m an hereby officially cancelling, wiping out, omitting and generally ignoring them. This is now the official contest and the entries will close at the first pitch tonight.

Carl, would you care to chime in?

I'm with ya. Had to find that old challenge or I'd drive myself bonkers.

And I thought it was my wife with OCD...

Ken of Brooklyn said...

Hey Gang, I'll amend my prediction to 96 wins and 166 runs, whoop whoop!

Pocono Steve said...

95/162

DickAllen said...

JM, OCD behaviors can be put to a practical use: would you like to be our official statistics keeper?

I'm wondering if you would like to keep track of the runs total for the rest of the year? The final win total will be, as Boooooone likes to say: "obvious."

Alphonso said...

96 with 97 as tie-breaker.

Ghost of Hoss here:

I'll stick with 96—which I think I was saying before—and 155 runs.

95 Wins 138 Runs.

Since Hoss had already snagged 96 runs before (as well as Alphonso), I'll change mine to and the unclaimed 98 with 166 runs,,,,,

Can someone start a game thread please. It would be nice to not muddy the predictive waters. Just like good whiskey doesn't need and shouldn't have a mixer.

I'm torn. On the one hand, I'm wearing brand new sox, so I'm feeling kind of buoyant. And it's been months since the Yankees have killed any of my cats. But ... I'm worried the juju gods will be watching. And this team has a tendency to blow hot and cold.

So I'll appease the gods. The Yankees will initially be credited with 96 wins this year, but will be forced to forfeit 24 of them when MLB decides, retroactively, that no team may have more than 2 outfielders greater than 6'5" playing at the same time. Thus, their total for the season will be 72. This will cost them a total of 90 runs over these last 33 games, reducing their total during that stretch to 65.

Ominous news, and a telling contrast between the Yankees and the Rays:

Comment on tonight's lineup: Wade should be displacing Urshela or Gardner, not Velazquez.

My Guess is 97 (tie breaker 135).

Dick, I'll track the run total. No problem.

This thread is officially closed!

Good luck to all our contestants!

Is the beer Utica Club or Genesee?

DickAllen said...

We may very well let the winner decide Rufus

TheWinWarblist said...

I stand by my 23 win number.

TheWinWarblist said...

These Yankees are going back to sucking. 10 more wins for the rest of the year. That's it.

13bit said...

I'm going to stand by what I have been saying the whole year, although I'll go with my high end of 86 wins. I had thought it could be as low as 76 at one point, but I must maintain my stance.

As for runs? 118

TheWinWarblist said...

To clarify: 86 total wins. 108 runs if they're lucky.
