What a joyous night!
The first unanimous Hall of Fame vote in history - overriding a Gammonite's attempt at sabotage - for the great Mariano Rivera! Hip-hip, hooray!
Long overdue appreciation for Mike Mussina, who will likely enter Cooperstown with an O's cap, but who earned the respect of Yankee fans, and whose first and only 20-win season came on the last pitch of his career! Hip-hip, hooray!
A nice, juicy, pungent shit sandwich for Mr. Curtis Schilling - the U.S. Senator from Pigsqueal, Mass. - who should go into the Hall on the day when Roger Maris, Ron Guidry, Bernie Williams, Mel Stottlemyre, Greg Nettles, Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly, Andy Pettitte and Thurman Munson are inducted. Hip-hip, who cares?
If Redsock fans, or Trump fans - or fans of superhuman, self-righteous hypocrisy - feel slighted, let them study the list of Yankees who were ignored, and then explain how all those World Championships came to be without great players. Because of Cooperstown's under-representation - directly related to anti-New York sportswriters - the Yankees need a Monument Park. And it's all because of Gammonites, as we'll discuss later.
I don't want to befoul today's celebration ripping on Schilling, whose defaulting on a loan from the state of New Hampshire rivals anything that Pete Rose ever did, because this should be about Mariano.
A few weeks ago, a little known Gammonite - Bill Ballou of the Worcester Telegram & Asswipe - announced that he wouldn't vote for Mariano out of some hissy-fit relating to his dislike of saves. (I'm not making this up. He feels saves are overrated so he pulled out the soapbox and -yeah, I can't figure it out either.) After weeks of being denounced, Ballou decided to abstain. He wouldn't vote.
I don't think for one minute that Ballou caved out of scorn from the Yankiverse. Boston fans thrive on Yankee contempt. I think Ballou picked up on the anger from fellow Redsock fans.
From the Joy of Sox.
To argue that Fruitbat is not a first-ballot Hall of Famer is delusional... Silver Lining: The first unanimous Hall of Fame selection will not be Derek Jeter.
The Boston Globe
Even the most ardent Boston fan had to respect the Yankees closer
So today, the good guy wins. Congratulations, Mariano. Hip-hip, hooray.

Take it from this citizen of the Ocean State: Sir Curt Ketchup Sock stiffed the citizens of Rhode Island, not New Hampshire.
"Fruitbat"? WTF??
Bill Ballou's recent article about this is a self serving rambling mess from an old man with extremely outdated views. I just couldn't read it attentively as I was getting more and more pissed off by just lightly skimming it. He really should have his voting rights taken away.
Anyway, it seems that 3 people didn't send their votes in for whatever insane reasons they have but it seems that they won't count those? I hope that they won't asterisk Mo for that and that will kick the idiots out of the voting pool. This is why I don't think Jeter will get 100% because there are always some idiot out there with some bug up their ass.
The circle is now closed on the Great One's awesome career. More history! very fitting.
was at the stadium for Mo's last game. memories I will take to the grave.
did some googling and found that some thought Mo looked like a fruit bat. don't really see it myself.
Glad that Mariano was 100%. It was bound to happen. In the old days no one talked about their ballots and so they didn't have to justify their votes or lack of a vote for a truly great ball player who is a slam dunk.
So guys like Griffey Jr., Willie Mays, Aaron, Mantle, etc. would have been 100% if held today.
Congrats to Moose too. If Pedroia ever gets in they could tour as Moose and Squirrel.
I was happy to see Edgar get in as well. He was the guy that scared me thee most. Found this stat yesterday...
Edgar hit .579/.652/1.053 in 23 plate appearances against Mariano. That's just insane!

MARIANO'S NUMBERS CAREER NUMBERS ARE ASTONISHING.
ON TOP OF THAT, HE IS TRULY A WONDERFUL MAN DESERVING EVERY ACCOLADE HE GETS.
.....BUT LETS THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX ON THESE QUIRKY RED SOX FANS.
DON'T THINK THEY WERE JUST BEING REASONABLE AND APPRECIATIVE OF MARIANO'S GREATNESS.
I THINK THE FACT THAT THEY HAD MUCH SUCCESS AGAINST HIM IS WHAT MADE IT EASIER FOR THEM TO "ACCEPT" HIM.
IF THE RED SOX COULDN'T HIT MARIANO LIKE THE TWINS OR SOME OTHER TEAMS COULDN'T, THEY WOULDN'T BE SUCH MARIANO "LOVE" COMING FROM BOSTON.
LBJ is correct, that piece of shit ,Schilling, defrauded the taxpayers of RI. RI floated bonds to lure away his video game company from NH. As someone who lives not all that far from the RI border, news of his shenanigans were well publicized in my area newspapers. That delusional right-wing birther and conspiracy theorist is a scam artist. "Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation argued in its lawsuit that the company had used false financial projections and misleading statements to obscure the fact that the company was "destined to fail according to 38 Studios’ own financial projections."
Plus Schilling had the balls to claim that the only reason 38 Studios failed was due to intentional sabotage by former governors Lincoln Chafee and Don Carcieri.
That rat bastard is very lucky he isn't in jail.
I heard the ketchup on his sock wasn't even Heinz it was Hunts.

No one will ever exceed Mo's numbers unless they change the save rules to coming in regardless of the score to close a game. Or if you don't give up a run as a reliever. Or you get one save for each out you get.
Re: Mariano.
Somewhere, Goose Gossage is rolling in his grave.....
....oh, you mean he's NOT dead?
Goose can stuff himself. I loved watching him pitch, he was great, and it's good he's in the Hall. But to listen to him talk, you'd think that his every save was three-inning stint in which he struck out the side with the bases loaded. It wasn't.
Yep, what Gossage was doing was tougher. Which was why he did it for a much shorter time, much less successfully. it's a trade-off.
ALL-CAPS, I don't recall the Sox hitting Mariano all that well.
They got to him in 2004 because he was crazily overused by Torre, at the end of the season and in the ALCS. Other losses to the Sox were more along the lines of that game up in Fenway when a double-play ball went right through A-Rod's legs.
For every one of those, there were ten like that big series in 2006, when Mo got it done despite Robby Cano blowing up behind him.
And as far as how much Boston likes him—I dunno, they were the one team on his farewell tour not to give him a real send-off, just a video of the hitting him. Class act.
Also, I will never forgive Mussina for all his playoff chokes—or for dissing Mo after he was safely retired.
His selection is proof positive of just how limited statistics are.
Red Sox fans HATE The Great Mariano. Ken over at Fire Joe Morgan referred to The Great Mariano as "that Panamanian Destructicon." High praise from a low-life smarmy Hollyowood joke-writing purulent twat.
FUCKERS!!!
The fruitbat idea must come from the same place as the Voodoo doctor, which is what my wife and I called Mariano for a while. When he was young and skinny, combined with his magical pitching, it seemed to fit.
