Will the Yankees really sit out a dead auction for Bryce Harper?

This idiotic stalemate - entering yet another month - has become a national disgrace. Talks are going nowhere. Nobody is getting paid. How much longer can this embarrassment - this stain upon our cultural identity - continue? On the news, some pundits are saying February, even March - long enough to permanently undermine the integrity of our system. Haven't we all seen enough? HAVEN'T WE ALL SEEN ENOUGH?

Of course, I'm referring to the so-called "free market" auctions for Manny Machado and Bryce Harper.

Once viewed as vanguards of a new salary structure, both have been systematically ghosted by big market teams, most notably the Yankees. And the word being increasingly whispered is "collusion."

Specifically, I'm targeting Harper, who at age 26 was projected to be the most sought-after free agent in modern history. After the Dodgers yesterday signed a middling, nothingburger outfielder, reports now say Harper's "market" boils down to Washington and/or Philadelphia. One is an insult - that he should stay with a team he's already decided to leave. The other is Philadelphia.

Listen: The war between owners and the owned is never a fair fight. When a battle pits billionaires against millionaires, you don't need a betting line. But I have to believe that, somewhere down the road, a federal judge will pass harsh judgement on the winter of 2018-19, as the courts did during the collusion trials of the 1980s. Either way, the end game here won't be pretty. Remember the  peace that came about during the last labor negotiations? Machado and Harper could become tag lines for a future strike. (Okay, players union, here's your chant, free of charge: "Manny and Bryce, Don't lie to us twice!")

But wait! Here is a chance for the Yankees to 1) break the current stalemate, 2) save MLB from a future shutdown and 3) win the 2019 AL East. In the next few days, Hal Steinbrenner should parachute into negotiations, slap down a big-ass $20-$25 million one-year-deal with a beer bucket full of options and incentives, and bring Harper to New York, where he has always been destined to play.

Stick him in left field and let the fates determine the future of Clint Frazier and Brett Gardner (both of whom will log plenty of time anyway.)

Yesterday, I moaned and bellowed about signing Dallas Keuchel. Let me be clear: Keuchel should be Yankee Target No. 1. But he will demand a long-term deal, and Harper - staring at the choice between herpes and chlamydia - might just be pissed off enough to accept the once-in-a-lifetime challenge of winning over NYC.

Because that's what I believe will happen. If Harper comes to the Yankees, I think he - along with Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Andujar - will become part of a legendary lineup, a modern day Murderers Row. Either way, the Yankees should not be done spending this winter. Remember: They spent last year being cheap, all to make a big splash this offseason. They promised us more than DJ LeMahieu and Adam Ottavino. It's time to step up. This disgraceful stalemate must end.

I'd give him a tester Yoenis Céspedes deal. 3 years, reasonably priced, with opt outs every year. Of course the Mets botched that up (as they are wont to do) by signing him to a new 4 year contract for mad money after he opted out for the first year and then he promptly became an albatross by pulling both hamstrings in '17 and then having crap heels in '18. '19 isn't looking to be much better either.

I know it's not a realistic deal for such quality players but it's probably what 90% of the teams would actually do if they were willing to take it. I'm thinking though that they'll end up signing an opt-out heavy contract for 5 to 7 years and breaking out of it the year after Trout and Mookie gets their contracts. They'll set the market and both Harper and Manny can probably get far better contracts going into their old ages assuming if they are still in peak condition in their late 20s.

It's a great plan, Duque. Unfortunately:

1. Hal does not care.

2. Hal's allegiance is to his fellow owners, all of whom are hurting financially at the moment. hard times, you know?

3. Hal is maybe not that bright, I'm beginning to think, or he doesn't want the love that New York City would shower him with if he were to follow your plan.

4. Maybe Hal has never known love? (you THINK?)

5. Hal does not care.

I LIKE VAMPFELLA'S IDEA....

GIVE BRYCE 3 YEARS, $99 MILL, WITH AN OPT OUT AFTER YEAR 2.

I BET WE WOULD GET 2 MONSTER YEARS OF PRODUCTION, IN THE LEAST.

I admit that I did let up on my management juju the last few days. but the weekend is coming and I won't let you all down. Expect Harper early next week. Hal will likely try to take credit for Harper's signing but that's OK. I'm a humble guy.

No one had made a real deal yet, meaning one that Bryce would accept. The Yanks are waiting to be the last offer, like they always do. But we have a bunch of owners who are in the midst of ("the password is "collusion"") presently to drive the price down. Can't blame them one bit.

Good God almighty! The historic losers in Philly (10,162 losses!!!) CANNOT be Harper's choice. Come on Yankees! Act like you're the Damn Yankees!!

I do blame the owners, ranger. They are raking in more dough than ever, and rather than try to accept that free agency has been a godsend for fan interest, they are once again trying to kill it.

Yes, I love the Duque idea: a one year challenge, say, $25 mill, loaded with incentives. Or the Cespedes special.

Time to be creative here—and Hal and Coops could paint themselves as geniuses, pretending they were just waiting for the market to shake out.

But I'm afraid 13bit is right, on all counts: Hal is not that bright. Hal doesn't care. And Hal has never known love.

Make it $60MM for two years, and Harper will do it. He'll still be hungry to put up yuge numbers, and the deal will be done while he's still in his prime. Do it, Hal, do it!

Here are SOME of the components of my NYY nightmare:

1. We get Bryce.

2. We don't have enough starting pitching.

3A. We trade Bird and he becomes a superstar elsewhere
3B. We don't trade Bird, and he goes further downhill.

4. Gary Sanchez hits .191 for the season, everyone drools at the improvement.

5. Boone still can't figure out what he's gotta do to be effective.

.....so we manage to finish in 3rd place despite Bryce. Management blames injuries to Didi, Monty, Gardy, CCS, and El Chapo for the underperformance. We here on IIH spend the 2019-20 winter asking each other questions such as: "who signed Gardy and CCS".."who didn't sign Manny".... "does Cory Kluber have an infectious disease?".....etc.

AND: The Nationals play better without Bryce.....

I was thinking along the same lines as Duque in regards to Hal swooping in and saving MLB from collusion charges. He will never accept a one year deal nor should he. Collusion in the mid-late 80's wasn't just about salary repression. It was also about limiting contract years. If you read the arbitrators rulings and Faye Vincent's letter to the owners after the verdict, you will see that the owners are doing the exact same thing again. You can say they aren't very smart. If they're found guilty (and if a suit is brought, I have no doubt they would be found guilty) as repeat offenders and in 2019 dollars I could see them paying the MLBPA north of a billion. Hal might be stupid but among his peers, he isn't alone.

That said, the Yankees should make Harper an offer of 6 yrs minimum (they wont) with opt out after 3 years at 33 million per or 30 million with easily reached incentives.

I don't understand duque's pining after big-money free agents while he bemoans the Yankees' burying of young talent.

I'm a HUGE Yankees fan, and I don't know whether to be concerned or actually fascinated (at this point) on what is going on here. The market CLEARLY is slow and its also Crystal CLEAR that the Yanks are going to be "fiscally responsible" and be patient and play possum if the need arises and look to make a move and POSSIBLY pounce around the last turn in a horse race at the last minute. But when will the last turn take place? As every week passes, this gets more and more interesting to me. Its too bad they have to deal with Ellsbury's and Stanton's contracts or this could be a MUCH different scenario......
