Unearthed... the Steinbrenner Stratagem

This from today's comments section, by Doug K (responding to Old Yankee Daddy Roger), refers to the Yankees' pursuit of free agents, while they also try to buy the YES Network:

"This isn't about HAL being cheap. This is about HAL driving down the price.

"Think about it... Let's say you were a co-owner of a house valued at one million dollars and you wanted to buy your other co-owner out for $500,000. Do you invest money, putting in an indoor pool (Machado, Harper) making the house worth 1.5 mil? No you don't.

"You don't INCREASE the value of something BEFORE you buy it. Remember we are not talking about the value of the team. It's the value of the network that shows the team. Not getting these guys equals lower ratings. Lower ratings equals lower value. Lower value equals lower price.

"We are truly screwed!"

Comrades, we just cracked this thing wide open.

THIS IS WHY THE YANKEES ARE GOING TO SIT ON THE HANDS AND LET THE BIG NAME FREE AGENTS SIGN ELSEWHERE.

Brilliant! Great work, Doug K. and Old Yankee Daddy Roger!

Is there anything we can't do together? They ought to put us on the Shroud of Turin and the Judge Crater case.

This all fits with Hal's idea of global domination. First, he wants full control of the network back.

The remaining, missing piece of the puzzle is why Hal and Hank sold much of YES in the first place. At the time, I really thought they were cashing in, that this was the start of them selling off the Yanks piece by piece, and so maximizing their money (and destroying our future) that way.

So...why this? Was that their original plan, but they were talked out of it by some genius like Randy Levine? Did they previously need the cash for some unrevealed disturbance in the Steinbrenner Empire?

The latter seems unlikely, considering how rich they are but who knows? Old George nearly managed to go bankrupt, back in the day. Was it to raise blackmail money for Hank's rumored pee tape?

Inquiring minds want to know!

But as concerns this season, I'm satisfied. My hopes have been blissfully extinguished, along with any and all anxiety. Wild Card race, here we come!

Duque, the one thing I disagree with you about concerning Tulo: he won't make it out of spring training.

Since we won't be signing anybody, what the hell: play Tyler Too there and maybe Kevin Holder, who is supposed to be a glove man. If they end up hitting .150 through April, through in Hetch-Hetchy until Didi is back.

It's time to relax. Pop me a beautiful Ballantine, Ballantine Ale, and let's return to the golden years of mindless mediocrity.

One thing: do you think, if we show enough fan interest, Hal might spring for a YES 2 channel that would show many, many more great Yankees games from the past? In fact, maybe ONLY great Yankees games from the past?

Just wondering.

What assholes.

OH! Looks like the Yanks signed Britton. Big Spending to come? But honestly they needed to sign some reliver at this point.

It gives them plausible deniability. Whatever they do from this point on, they can say about Doug K's theory: "that's absurd - look at what we're doing and how much we've spent. AND WE'RE NOT DONE YET..."

They're full of shit.

Yeah, I guess Coops incessantly whining, "But Hal, if CC has his stroke in the THIRD inning, who the hell can we put in?" finally moved The Great Man. Hurrah.

So now the pen is:

Chapman
Betances
Britton
Green
Holder

—and who am I forgetting? Not bad—but not as good as it looked a year ago.

We’ll need them all. Our rotation is weak.

The Yankees will need, conservatively, relief pitchers capable of holding down the fort for 500 innings this year. Less conservatively and perhaps more realistically given the Five & Die stylings of our starters, 600 to 650 innings. Get Ottavino and every nonTyler Clippard reliever you can find.
