The reason why relievers like Lindy so often had "up and down" careers in those days was that managers would routinely "Torre" them: pitch them until their arms blew out, if they were going well.

McDaniel not only had some fine seasons for the Yankees, he was part of a great string of players.

Lindy was acquired for Bill Monboquette, the old Red Sox pitcher, who the Yanks had picked up as a free agent in 1967, and who had pitched very well for a very bad team. They got McDaniel for him in 1968—and then traded Lindy for Lou Piniella before the 1974 season. A pretty fair string of deals.

Lindy was a fascinating pitcher, a clever fellow who threw it where he wasn't expecting. First time I saw him, we (Cubs) were playing the Giants at Wrigley, and they brought him in in the 8th, with the bases loaded and nobody out in a tied game. We'd never heard of him, the Giants had brought him with them, and there'd been a trade. First thing, he picked Willie (you know) Mays off second base, then a double play. Came to bat first and smacked a home run over the ivy in left center. Always remembered it, because Willie was the goat for once. Crafty guy.
