Before there was The Master there was...The Scooter.
Phil Rizzuto, on why he did not sign one of the big contracts the Pasquel Brothers were passing out in 1946, as part of their effort to turn the Mexican League into a third major league:
"It was a time when you couldn't get butter, your couldn't get stockings, you couldn't get a girdle. Not that Cora needed a girdle."

Bliss, indeed.
Holy COW! IZ ALLZ I'ZE GOT'Z TA ZAY
I miss Phil
Period.
End of story
I was under the thinking that the reason Rizzuto didn't get voted in the HOF during his eligibility period was his interest in playing in the Mexican League...it was like a permanent scar on his career...
Don't think so, ranger. I mean, pretty much every player at the time must have considered it, with the money the Pasquels were throwing around.
It was more that Phil's stats just weren't what you would consider HOF in those days. That changed when Reese got in—better stats, but in much more of a hitter's park. Also, people began to pay more attention to things like fielding, for shortstops.
AND...there was more consideration given to guys contributing in different capacities. As with Torre—near HOF hitter...who then added 4 rings as manager. Phil: a top SS in his time, plus 35 years or so as beloved broadcaster.
