There Are Moves To Be Made and It’s Going To Come Down To Will

Will we overpay to get the pitcher we need?  Frankie Montas from the A’s.

Will we get any kind of return for Joey Gallo?

Will we empty the farm for Juan Soto?

Will we bring David Robertson back to bolster the pen?

Will we do anything at all?

The answer is no.

----

Here's an outside the box trade that would help us greatly but won't happen . Christian Vazquez and Xander Bogaerts. (Both in their last year and probably available for the right price.)

For Higgy and IKF  (to take their place)  +  You tell me - and yes it would have to hurt.

But, if Vazquez splits the load evenly with Trevino, we would have a line up with ZERO holes.  Especially if we move DJ to third)

This would be the lineup for the playoffs...

Bogaerts SS
DJ 3B
Judge RF
Rizzo 1B
Gleyber 2B
Benintendi LF
Carpenter DH
Vazquez/Trevino
Hicks CF

A nice balance of power and contact hitters plus Xander is a much better shortstop.

If Stanton comes back, Hicks sits and Judge goes to CF.

Ain't gonna happen but it would be a hell of a move.

----

All of that said,  I read somewhere that the Mariners are something like 22-3 in their last 25 games. The also got new Yankee Killer Luis Castillo in a trade.

They are our next opponent.  Of course they are.

"PEOPLE OF EARTH.

I HAVE INSTRUCTED MY ONLY LIVING SON TO DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THE JOB DONE FOR 2022.

I DIDN'T WANT CASTILLO. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO ASK WHY.

BUT THERE IS A LOT THAT I DO WANT.

PREPARE TO BE AWED.

STUNNED.

PERPLEXED.

BECAUSE IT WILL BEGIN SHORTLY.

YOU HAVE BEEN INFORMED.

GET ER' DONE, SON!"

In their last 25 games, the Mariners are 1-6 vs. the Astros and 17-1 vs. everyone else.

Because we all know where this season is heading...

All too true, Zach.

And Doug? Boston is NEVER going to do something to help us win it all.

If the Giants decide to sell, I hope the Yankees look at Carlos Rodon. He's likely a rental (has an opt out after the season) so he'll be cheaper than Luis Castillo and Frankie Montas.

That's "only" a 3.00 ERA, but the under-the-hood stuff looks great. He gets a ton of strikeouts, doesn't walk anyone and limits home runs.

July 19, 1978, BoSox lead Yanks by 14 games.
Then , the collapse.

2022, Yanks collapse.
Anyone doubt it?

IT would be an epic Yankee collapse, but;
Coachman would have to be canned,
maybe Hal sells to a billionaire Yankees fan.

One can only hope.
This scenario is more likely than a WS Title

Rodon is supposedly on the hot pursuit gameboard along with Montas.

Boston would never make that trade, but it would be great. For us.

As far as the division goes...

Only Toronto at 11.5 games back has even a remote shot.

There are 59 games left. If we play .500 ball (and there are a lot of tomato cans out there) we finish the year with 99 wins.

Toronto would need to win 43/59 to get to 100.

If we play over .500 (and we will) it becomes pretty tough.

As to the playoffs...

We could easily get eliminated the first time we play.

Yep. The largest lead was 15 1/2 games, so it would be WORSE than Boston's 1978.

AND...would leave Cashman as the guy who presided over the worst playoffs AND regular-season collapses of all time.

Not saying I want to see this happen—I don't—but it would, finally, dent his reputation.

Ok, maybe a first round elimination and Halitosis decides to save 100K and hire a cheaper GM.

After All, as he stated, he has an obligation to the "bondholders."
