Ike Davis is a Yankee: We are officially mediocre

Get ready for a TV snapshot opportunity. One of these days, it will happen. My prediction: It will come in late July, as the Yankees breathlessly continue their mating dance with .500. The YES starting lineups will flash, and your TV will offer you a glimpse into Hell. It will resemble this:

I'm betting that Ellsbury, A-Rod and Beltran will be hurt, and others will need a day off. Here's what it could look like: (A nice Kardashian figure, eh?)

BRETT GARDNER lf
ROB REFSNYDER 2b
BRIAN McCANN dh
IKE DAVIS 1B
AUSTIN ROMINE C
CHASE HEADLEY 3B
RONALD TORREYES SS
AUSTIN HICKS RF
BEN GAMEL CF

Of course, we will be challenging for the Wild Card, just as the immortal Wells-Hafner dynasty did. Nick Swisher might be in there, too. Who knows, we might even re-sign Alberto Gonzalez!

Meanwhile, some items to ponder.

1. Yesterday, tickets for Old Timers Day were being sold on secondary markets for as low as $8. The game is usually a sellout.  The Yankees were even selling cheap tickets on their secondary exchange. In simple terms, the word is out.

2. Yesterday, here were the batting averages for the Yankees Double A affiliate in Trenton - from top to bottom: .269, .221, .211, .232, .250, .222, .203, .222, .216. Quite a lineup, eh? (BTW, the .222s belonged to former top picks Dante Bichette Jr. and Cito Culver.) Keep in mind that Double A is viewed as the critical level for prospects. Right now, the cupboard is bare.

3. Yesterday, in Michael Fulmer, the Yankiverse caught a glimpse of the kind of young player you can get at a trade deadline, if you accept that your team isn't going anywhere. Theoretically, any team with Ike Davis at 1B is not a legitimate contender. The Yankees, of course, won't accept this.

With a week of tomato cans ahead, the Yankees could finally climb over .500. But this weekend was incredibly demoralizing. The Tigers aren't that good, and they ate our lunches at home, in front of Goose, Reggie and Gator.

If you want the Yankees to win a world series, should we actually root for this team to flirt with .500 in hopes of chasing another Wild Card?

I guess Swisher ain't coming. And Ref ain't hitting enough to stave off the inevitable.

Knew the Yankees had to have a "real" first baseman, no matter how crappy, but didn't want to face it...at least Swish would've been fun.

Crap.

At least Davis didn't cost us any young players. He may be better than you expect. Batting average will be lousy, but he'll draw a lot of walks and loft a few into the short porch. Better than Lyle Overbay, at least.
