Searching for meaning in a meaningless universe

Perhaps also meaningless, but the much-maligned Carter also had a BB and scored a run. Pertinent to those who refer to but don't understand Moneyball,in addition to hitting a lot of HR Carter walks a lot.

Joe, I get what you're saying about Carter being a useful chess piece on a contending team. I just worry that he'll become our RH platoon at first - which means Greg Bird loses 150 at bats - and in the end, all we'll have done is chased a one game wild card.

You're right: We're probably too hard on Carter. Occasionally, these guys prove to be very valuable, and I've heard nothing bad about the guy as a teammate. But Bird needs to play every day, not only against righties. Platooning him would be criminal.

I mostly agree, actually.
Give the young guys as many at-bats as reasonable, depending on how they are doing.
But Carter is only 30, he's cheap, and we've got him next year, too, by which time we might actually be contenders. He makes more sense to me than Holliday, even though Holliday has been a better player, because Holliday is older and he will be a free agent at the end of this "transition" season.
