For Real?

We traded with Seattle?

Anyone remember the Jay Buhner trade?

We sent a young, high-end prospect for an old loser?

Jay Buhner haunted us for years.  He was an All Star.

The Yankees got back got a true dick head who never did a thing.  Ken Phelps was his name.  He DH'd and hit .224 for the Yankees.

The trade was so one-sided it became the lead joke on a Seinfeld episode.

How many teams trade their ACE ( a lefty, no less ) unless they know, " the party is over with that guy?"

He is already 30 and looks about 45.

He has already pitched his no-hitter.

We traded our best pitching prospect---plus two others ----for a 30+ guy the Mariners know is broken.

Mark my words.  I would call Dr. Andrews back from vacation today.

Cashman has flamed out on this one.

And it won't matter.

Hal will extend his contract whilst Sheffield thrives.

Our farm system now must rank 31st.

And trending down.

Just shoot me.

Has anyone looked at what Mariner fans are saying? That's usually a pretty good indication.

Here are the first group of comments I looked at from
www.lookoutlanding.com/2018/11/19/18103644/mariners-trade-james-paxton-to-yankees-for-justus-sheffield-p-erik-swanson-of-dom-thompson-williams

I hate it.

I was hoping that it would be Sheffield and Frazier.
Posted by Coach1981 on Nov 19, 2018 | 3:48 PM

I am just shocked Frazier was not in this. I really am.
Posted by JVaughn123 on Nov 19, 2018 | 4:40 PM

Unless they're holding onto Frazier for a SS trade

I think we got hosed.

Paxton is a stud and I will miss him
But I won’t miss the annual DL stints and the inability to make 30 starts.
Posted by Coach1981 on Nov 19, 2018 | 3:47 PM

Well at least we have a good history when it comes to trading for Yankees #1 prospects...
Posted by Satan's Cry on Nov 19, 2018 | 3:48 PM

I would have preferred to see more of an overpay for Paxton
But I think this is a fair return, so whatever. I’m sad he’ll be gone but we have new people to make memories with now

So should I be angry or just whelmed?

Sure!

Underwhelming
This trade comes in underwhelming low compared to other previous trades. How the Mariners don’t get back Jonathan Loasaiga, Albert Abreu, or Luis Medina seems crazy to me? Dipoto has to stop going with players that have decent floors but have minimal ceilings or we’ll never develop any stars. He seems to be so scared to go for it! Personally, I would’ve rather taken Estevan Florian if that gave me a better player on the back end.

Not a fan

Am I the only one who thought we could get a guy with a little mlb experience and a prospect or two? Or in a package of all prospects get at least one who projects as a number one at some point? From what I’ve read the Yankees and some others see Sheffield as a number 3 the other two guys aren’t even top ten in the Yankees farm system. I sure hope Jerry knows what he is doing. I also would’ve liked to have seen salary dump with one of Gordon or seager, maybe we can still do that.
More moves have to be coming, we still need pitching at the mlb level even if Sheffield is given a spot and we have no catcher.

The other thing to consider is that Paxton is 30 and has an injury history

It would always be nice to get more, but prospect hauls never look quite as good as one expects, and there are reasons to doubt Paxton even if he is amazing.

Fascinating.

Source: #Yankees mentioned #Mariners SS Jean Segura in trade talks before decision was made to focus on Paxton alone. Segura’s inclusion in the deal would have all but eliminated Yankees as possible destination for Manny Machado.

Also,

Since we haven't done the FA thing yet and Gray and Paxton are a wash salary wise.

with Corbin.

Sevarino
Paxton
Corbin
Tanaka
Sabathia

Or with Happ

Sevarino
Paxton
Tanaka
Happ
Sabathia

INSTEAD OF KEEPING SHEFFIELD, AND ADDING SONNY GRAY TO A LIST OF MORE OF OUR PROSPECTS, TO THIS MARINER DEAL, CASHMAN HAS RECEIVED AN OLDER, POSSIBLY EQUAL, LEFT HANDED PITCHER (MINUS 3 PROSPECTS, ONE OF THEM BEING OUR #1).

NOW COOP WILL TURN AROUND AND DEAL SONNY GRAY FOR 2 NOTHING BURGERS THAT WILL PROBABLY NEVER HELP US.

THINKING ABOUT THIS, I RATHER HAVE JUST SIGNED HAPP AND PROMOTED SHEFFIED TO THE ROTATION, INSTEAD OF THIS PAXTON SHIT....AND KEEP SWANSON IN THE PROCESS. HE MAY BE A SLEEPER...BUT OF COURSE, THE FAMOUS YANKEE "MYSTERY SCOUT" DOESN'T THINK SO.

IF KLUBER IS AVAILABLE LIKE THEY SAY HE IS, AND WE GOT RID OF OUR #1 PROSPECT, FOR THIS PAXTON CLOWN THEN,
A.) WE FUCKED UP...AND
B.) WE ARE CHEAPING OUT AGAIN (WORRYING ABOUT KLUBER'S CONTRACT).

CASHMAN SUCKS.

HE REALLY FUCKING SUCKS.

HAL TOO.

I agree about Swanson.

Nice reporting, Doug. It's always informative to see what the other team's fans have to say about a trade.

But it is obvious that someone influential in the Yankees braintrust (perhaps that is an oxymoron) didn't think that highly of Sheffield or thought he wouldn't be able to pitch effectively in 2019 at the MLB level. You could see that evaluation by the way they kept promoting other pitchers over him.

Personally, I'd rather have seen a young kid like him trying to make the rotation instead of trading for Paxton. Still, Paxton is a decent pitcher and I hope he kicks ass for us.

So, is Paxton the next Gray, Lynn or Garcia? What a f***king joke!!!

Leinstery said...

I'd rather have Happ and Corbin and never see CC pitch for this team again. Especially against the Red Sox.

My guess, and it is only a guess is that Cashman tried to get Kluber or Carassco and the price was Sheffield + (AnDUjar or Gleybar) and he said no. Whereas the price for Paxton was Sheffield plus two lesser guys so he went that way.

Like I said, just a guess. We can still get Corbin (or Happ) and Machado/Harper. these are upgrades.

Paxton>Gray. (Sheffield would have gotten a rotation shot but who knows how that would turn out. Paxton does have a track record. The question is health not ability.

Basically I feel like Carl,

"Personally, I'd rather have seen a young kid like him trying to make the rotation instead of trading for Paxton. Still, Paxton is a decent pitcher and I hope he kicks ass for us."

Me too.

I really don't know what to make of this trade. I really need to see Paxton play as he's a total mystery to me, playing on a crap team that I have ignored since Griffey Jr went to the Reds. I look at the stats for him and I'm not blown away but then I realize that pitching of any sort is hard to get and it was probably a fair trade given the context to what other teams would have had to give up for him. The Red Sox was fleeced for so much more in recent years for their starters but they seemed to get way better quality in return. The Yanks don't seem to have that same knack for a decent pitching trade, so I'm guessing this one will end up being a fail.

More important to me is that now it's obvious that the Yanks are not going to go $250 million like the Red Sox nor probably even over the cap to obtain what they need. Paxton seems to be on level with the rest of the decent starter talent that they could buy this year, but obviously much much cheaper. Then again so was Grey and look at where that got us.

Honestly I rather see them do a trade like this than to buy some crappy iffy pitcher at $25 million a year for 5 years and be stuck with him (except for his 3 opt out clauses just in case he is any good). If it were possible to buy a great pitcher, then I'm all for it, but this years crop is more meh than knock out and I rather see them pay low for their efforts.

Also, I really disliked Sheffield and I felt he could be an Ivan Nova at best so I'm glad we got rid of him. He's the type of pitcher that needs much more seasoning on a bad team and the Yanks would have ruined him like Joba.

Now I'm thinking that we SHOULD be getting a Sheffield-like rookie pitcher who's ready in 2 to 4 years in return for Grey plus get two question mark almost ready players as well. Yet we're more likely to get yet another questionable outfielder (Frazier) and probably a pair of iffy middle relief like Green and whoever it was that we got a few years back. Not feeling at all confident here.

So basically I really cannot feel too much rage or happiness for this trade until I see more of the overall plan for the off-season. If they get the same basic trade back for Grey, then it's a dead even swap in my eyes and no big deal. I'm assuming though that they'll end up with more players that they couldn't possibly use and those will end up getting traded some 2-3 years later for more of the same and that cycle repeats on and on. So it's a huge shrug "whatever" for now.
