What YES Is Up To.

El Duque's searing critique of the YES Network got me to thinking:  what could they possibly be doing, showing last March 28th's victory over the Orioles?

Could they finally have tired of repeating their sadly limited array of "Yankees Classics"?  Could they somehow be out of Nets' or—Heaven forbid—NYCFC "Classics"?

Why this game?

A perusal of YES' upcoming schedule—much like Paul Reiser in Diner, pictured above—perusing the order of the big eater in the diner ("Tank"?)—made me realize what's going on.

Reiser:  "Oh, I see, he's going for the whole left side of the menu!"

Me:  "Oh, I see!  YES is going to show every Yankees win in 2019.  All 108 of them. "

Or at least, that's what it looks like.

While I would rather see every win in the 1977, 1978, 1998, 1999, 2000, or 2009 seasons, I gotta say, there's a certain, stirring madness in this.

The big eater's name was "Earl". Reiser's character (Modell) characterized Earl as being "like a building with feet". Earl drove a Nash Metropolitan.

Diner is one of my favorite movies. Anyone who hasn't seen it should give it a shot.

Terrific movie, LBJ, and incredibly lucky for so many in it. Reiser, Tim Daley, Mickey Rourke, Ellen Barkin, Daniel Stern, Kevin Bacon, Michael Tucker, Steve Guttenberg...it was hard NOT to have a big career if you were in that film.

Not to forget the director, Barry Levinson...it was both his first screenplay and first directing assignment.

I have said to more than a few women, "if you ever sat around with a few other young women in your flannel nighties making popcorn and wondering what the men you knew were doing instead of calling you, watch Diner."

Every single scene contains a classic (e.g., "Earl"), but two personal favorites are:

1) The argument over whether it's ok for Modell to have some of Eddie's roast beef sandwich ("Just say it! 'I want the roast beef sandwich!'"), culminating with Modell telling him "Your problem is you don't chew your food. It's like you've got great globs of roast beef in your heart."

2) When Boogie and Shrevie are riding home from the diner at dawn and see an attractive woman riding a horse and pull over. After a brief conversation, Boogie asks the woman, "What's your name?". She replies, "Jane Chisholm, as in 'The Chisholm Trail'." Boogie stares blankly for a moment and then turns around to Shrevie and asks "What fucking Chisholm Trail? Do you get the feeling that there are things out there we don't know anything about?"

God, I'm watching it tonight. Thanks for bringing it up.

Ok, now I'm obsessed...

After all these years, I finally looked up The Chisholm Trail.

The fact that The Chisholm Trail was "a trail used in the post-Civil War era to drive cattle overland from ranches in Texas to Kansas railheads" is so delightfully random that you just know this was a real incident from Levinson's life.

The movie just gets better and better.
