If DJ LeMahieu walks, the Yankees need a Plan B...

My internal polling projects D.J. LeMahieu to win the American League MVP by 4 percentage points. (After tonight, it's all yours, Nate Silver.) DJ deserves not only the award, but our eternal gratitude. He's the greatest Yankee acquisition in this millennium, a future team captain and a plaque destined for Monument Park.

Or... maybe no.

Soon, LeMahieu will hit a depressed, Covid-sick free agent market, where some billionaire owners won't even answer their phones. But he's got at least one suitor. Newly crowned Mets scion Steven Cohen has an infinite money supply and maybe a thirst for back page self-pleasurement. Nowhere can Cohen get a bigger tabloid bang than by showering crazy money to turn a Yankee into a Met. By signing DJ, he would instantly establish his franchise as the alpha male in NYC.

There are also whispers talk that Toronto - another team with limitless cash - will chase LeMahieu. With DJ in the Blue Jays' young and ascending lineup, they could challenge Tampa in the AL East. Seattle wants him. The Padres, maybe. Good grief, wherever he goes, whatever he gets, he'll be worth every penny.

Years ago, Hal Steinbrenner let Robbie Cano walk to Seattle. Today, it looks like one of his wisest decisions. Food Stamps also faces the horrible Giancarlo Stanton contract, which will hobble us until 2028. We'd be fools to think LeMahieu - who turns 33 in July - would choose Yankee loyalty over his family's last shot at financial stability before his career begins to fade.

If someone offers DJ five to eight years, will the Yankees top it? I seriously doubt it.

Which brings us to the dark side: What if our best player leaves? Well, here's the lineup.

1b Voit (current at peak trade value.)
2b TBA (could Gleyber return?)
ss Gleyber (or a slick glove man?)
3b Urshela
lf Frazier (at last?)
cf Hicks
rf Judge
c Higashioka (underrated) or Sanchez (no trade value)
dh Stanton

leftovers: Gardy (if signed), Andujar (the great intangible; what do we do with him?)

Listen: This is not a bad lineup - until Hicks, Judge and Stanton get hurt. If they stay healthy - yeah, that's a stretch - this team contends. And if they all go down, we're sorta dead anyway, right? (We need a LH bat, though.) Everything depends on - gulp - pitching.  For now, we have:

Cole (a true ace)
Montgomery
Garcia
Schmidt
Tanaka (if we re-sign him.)
A starter, such as Trevor Bauer?, from money saved by losing Paxton, Happ and - gulp - LeMahieu?

Make no mistake: DJ LeMahieu is/was a great Yankee. But is Gleyber really our SS? If he must return to 2B, where exactly would DJ fit? And if we are to make one free agent splash this winter, wouldn't we better off with pitching?

Great move....plenty of that BS elsewhere.
Looks like the typewriter tough guys have been squelched also. The personal attacks were getting out of hand.
There are some very good writers here, and lots of people with great insight, let them contribute without having their family denegrated.

Bauer and Morton and and Didi and Realmuto (I can dream, can't I?)

If they don't re-sign the machine, I will watch even less next year, if that is possible. I haven't been this disappointed in the Yankees since the Kevin Maas Yankees.

RTF:

I completely agree. DJL was the one guy whose at-bats I would stop and watch 100% of the time. Such a great player; every one of his actions on the field remind us what the game is all about.

I hate long deals but I'd love to see him get a 5-year contract.

On another topic, when will we see an "It's Going to Be a Covid Christmas" LP?

Surely, the marketing wizards have not muffed this chance for chart-topping success.

My solutions -- to make it more enjoyable to be a Yankee fan, if maybe not win --

1. Pay Stanton the $218 million he needs to go away. Then make him go away. Maybe he'll take as little as $197 million if they pay it up front, in a tax-advantaged manner.

2. Sign DJ. Put him at first base. Hope he can stretch more stunning years out of his aging body.

3. Get the max trade value NOW out of Luke's stunning performance in 2020. It's a steal for some club or another. This is insurance against the guy coming back to earth.

4. Trade Ursh. He's a great player. AND he has some time left before he becomes able to command his own $$$ future. This doubles his trade value (maybe). I do not dislike him, but he might be worth more to the team as a trade chip.

5. Put Andujar back at third base. Teach him to play the position. Hope he can do 2018 again. Half of his problem in 2020 might have been the feeling that his team had lost confidence in him. BTW, Miggy will be 26 on 3/2/2021.

6. If we can get nothing whatsoever for Gary ICS, make HIM the DH. Maybe he could hit if he didn't have that distracting catcher shit to think about. After all, if you DH, you have only 4 or 5 at-bats to strain your brain. Catching is a 9-inning preoccupation -- fielding bunts, blocking errant balls in the dirt, calling pitches, etc.

7. Sure, get a real SS who can field -- and move The Gleyber to 2B. Maybe get Didi back. He hits LH, you know!

8. Trade Frazier before he comes back to earth. Let Gardy walk. Put someone else in the OF (there are a lot of mediocre outfielders around, ya know). Yeah, Frazier is wonderful. I don't think he has a fielding problem. But he's young enough to attract a lot of attention (at least) -- maybe something good in a trade. Frazier is 26, which is a ripe young age; might make some other team salivate.

Summing up: Solve the Stanton problem forever. Trade Frazier, Ursh, Luke. Get a SS with some of that value. Get 1 or 2 pitchers (maybe a #3 starter?) in return, too. If the team is lucky. You know, of course, that Brian is a freaking genius GM, right? This is simple stuff for a guy like him.

What to do about the sweaty stopper? If I think I have "all the answers" (and I do not actually) --- I really don't know what to do with Chapman. Were you one of the other 29 general managers, you might want Voit/Ursh/Frazier (one or two or all three) . . . but would you really take on Chapman?

AND -- oh yeah, this is HUGE -- hope to heck that Judge can figure out how to stay healthy enough to play 147 games in a 162-game season.

.....which, as we know, might take place again as soon as the year 2023.

[I hope that last was not too political for today's official ban on fecal material]

Good call, Duque! As usual.

I apologize for indulging in this myself, and taking bait I should have known enough to resist. I not only intend never to talk politics here again, but also never to talk it anywhere, ever again.

(At least, that is, any politics that took place after 1945.)

Now, to get to something that actually makes sense...

Great, grand strategy, Joe FOB.

BUT...it falls apart on the Cashman Conundrum. He can't make a good trade—so it's useless to talk about it.

Really, considering the incessant injuries, the Yanks should hang on to each and every good player they have. Get rid of Gardy, who is done, get rid of Sanchez, who is at least done in New York.

For the rest? Assemble them any way you can. They won't get rid of Stanton and who knows? Maybe he'll have some fluke, great year, and push us across.

Get. Pitching.

Get another two starters, and another three relievers.

But they won't.

And for the love of God, let Frazier grow his hair out again. Sometimes I hate that corporate stuff- even though I like the ban on facial hair. I realized last season that those stupid beards are interchangeable. Maybe there is only one beard and all the players share it. I hate the Rays anyway
