In the Wake of the Soccalypse

The June results are in—and they're not pretty.

As predicted, the Paper of Record turned its full attention to soccer with the World Cup. The Yanks warned 31 Times articles for June, their second highest monthly total in 2018—and got absolutely stomped.

The year so far:  Soccer 210, Yankees 129.

Month by month:

June:        Soccer 123, Yankees 31
May:        Yankees 28, Soccer 17
April:       Yankees 32, Soccer 22
March:     Yankees 23, Soccer 21
February: Yankees 14, Soccer 12
January:    Soccer 15, Yankees 1

And...the Soccalypse is only half over!

By the by, it really should be the Europe-South America Cup. The two continents had 14 of the 16 teams to advance from group play, 10 for Europe, 4 for South America, with 1 apiece for North America (Mexico) and Asia (Japan).

Or even, the Europe-Brazil-Argentina Cup. The only other South American team to win it all, Uruguay, did so last in 1950.

Just thought you'd want to know.

Hey: According to the lineup for tonight posted to MLB.com --

Gleyber is batting 4th

Miggy is hitting 6th -- and --

....batting 7th and playing first base, the Drury of our dreams!

Down here in Greenwich Village, it would appear that winter is over.

So, two home runs gets you some pine? Hey, I'll take it, I'll take—just glad Walker isn't out there.

Also, very happy to see that deGrom, aka legroom, is indeed pitching for the Mets this afternoon, as scheduled. I was afraid that he was bumped from last night's start due to a pending trade. Very relieved!

I am not a big fan of Sonny, But there is no reason he won’t go for seven innings of one hit ball today. Hope dies hard when you grow up in Yonkers.

HoraceClarke66 said...

I hear ya, 13bit.

Also, just watched Legroom give up three runs in six innings against the Mighty Marlins of Miami, and leave trailing, 3-2. It was like looking at Sandy Koufax in his prime.

Seriously, he pitched pretty well, 8 strikeouts, only 1 walk, 6 hits. Gave up one run thanks to a fielding brain freeze. But he was hardly invincible.

I mean, it's baseball. ANYTHING can happen on any given day.

Mets lost, turning in their worst June ever, 5-21.

They are now in last place, and have also set the all-time MLB record—by a month!—in going from at least 10 games over .500 to at least 15 under .500.

Yeah, the writers are correct. We should just give them the store.

Sonny, based loaded. Had two outs and couldn't finish it. Yes gunning for 100 pitches by the third.

Classic Sonny outing.

JM said...

Jesus, a grand slam.

ranger_lp said...

Sonny "Horror Show" Gray.

Leinstery said...

36 pitches for 1 inning. 4 runs before even getting to bat against Chris Sale. This guy is terrible in every possible way.

JM said...

Wonder who we can get for Sonny and Walker?

Anonymous said...

Can't say, but we'd probably get more for Sonny Fox and Jimmie 'JJ' Walker

Doug K.

JM said...

How about JJ and Sonny Bono?

TheWinWarblist said...

I hate him. I hate him so much.

JM said...

Maybe if they got him a wig and changed his name to Jennifer Grey...

Sunny D and Johhny Walker

doug k.

TheWinWarblist said...

Maybe if he went on the 60 day after slamming his scrotum in the hood of a truck.

JM said...

Why is he still pitching?

JM said...

I'm liking this truck idea.

TheWinWarblist said...

The only good news of day is that Verlander gave up 5 to the Rays.

Leinstery said...

It's one thing to give up a shit ton of runs, but this turd can't even give length. 61 pitches through 2, 6 runs. There is no hyperbole when I say he's surpassed the Javy Vasquezs, Jeff Weavers, and Jared Wrights of days past. He's THE worst pitcher I've ever seen put on the uniform.

Classic Sasha Grey Bukkakke-Po-Looza, URRGGGGGG!
Annnnd, this is the outing that pushes Cashman to pull the trigger, DOUBLE URRRGGGG!

JM said...

And now we burn through everyone in the bullpen so we have nobody for tomorrow night. Great trade, Cash. Wonder if we can get Garcia back?

13bit said...

I could have made all kinds of bad jokes, comparing him to Sasha Grey, making bad rhyming couplets, fashioning limericks and any other number of crude, sophomoric gestures. Instead, I will ask one thing. What did we give up to get this monstrosity? Was it just money? And who the fuck is accountable for him? I guess it’s way too late in the game to play the old “all he needs is a change of scenery” parlor trick and dump him somewhere else.

Leinstery said...

Suzyn just reported that Sonny now has the highest ERA at Yankee Stadium among any Yankee pitcher in history surpassing Carl Pavano. My God, he is the undisputed worst pitcher we have ever seen.

And Is Judge 1-19 against sale with 18 K's? He sucks too.

JM said...

Tanaka comes back, keep German and Lasagna, Gray to the bullpen or we trade him. Somehow. Any way possible.

Leinstery said...

13bit, Coops traded Fowler, Kaprelian, and Mateo. Mateo is apparently struggling real bad in the minors, not surprising as his whole game was based on speed rather than you know, skill. Kaprelian is made of glass and wet tissue paper and is on the DL again. And Fowler is playing alright in the majors. He started off abysmally so I'm not sure how well he's playing now as his stats are up to "underwhelming."

Leinstery said...

Swap Gray for deGrom. Give them someone else (poor Clint) and take Bruce in return as they're desperate to get rid of him. The Mets are a team that would bite on Gray as they'd trick themselves into thinking it's just Yankee Stadium that affects him.

JM said...

Has anyone on radio or TV said that Gray has great stuff? Or that the Yankees need Sonny Gray to be the Sonny Gray who the Yankees thought they were getting?

13bit said...

Thanks, Leinstery. I had blocked out all details. It's a mental survival mechanism. Glass or not, I still think Kaprelian could do something one day. It just will not be for us. Anyway, at this point, he is just taking up space and sucking the wind out of our sails every 5 days.

Leinstery said...

I thought that too about Kap, but these injuries are mounting up. He appears destined to be one of those guys that gets his shot when he's 30 for the Rays where he's decent bullpen guy. It's a shame too, they said he was going to be the front line starter they'd call up during the year to take them over the top.

HoraceClarke66 said...

Right you are, Leinstery. Kaprielian has not pitched in a competitive game since 2016, and is now 24. Mateo is Mr. Speed, but has stolen only 13 bases in 23 attempts this year—as well as hitting .231. Fowler is mediocre, but sadly has shown no sign of living up to what his potential looked like before he had his tragic injury.

So, there's that, at least.

I was thinking about Gray for deGrom, too. He's younger, has more years under "team control," does decently away from Yankee Stadium, etc. I still don't see even the Mets as biting on that one.

I would think that something like Gray, Cessa, and a trunkload of cash might get us a Happ or Hamels, but everybody wants more from the Yanks. Gray and Cessa for Stephen Matz, perhaps? Well, I can dream, can't I?

ranger_lp said...

Are we tired of the "But Gray is pitching better of late BS" yet? Talk about Fake News...
