This is just the kind of off-the-field controversy that baseball doesn't need.

Can't McCarver retire already? Bad enough we're saddled with Mr. Pomposity at Fox.

By the way, are we at the end of the Bootcheck era? And have you noticed that Almonte is the only Zolio in MLB? Now all we need is a guy named Butter, or maybe we just get Zolio to change his last name to Margarine.

"In other roster moves made Wednesday, the Yankees designated pitcher Chris Bootcheck for assignment, and recalled RHP Adam Warren and outfielder Zoilo Almonte from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre."

There was another, notable, Zolio in MLB in the early 1960s, Zoilo Versalles. He was good, but not as good as Tony Kubek or Tom Tresh.

Question: Dodger pitcher in the afternoon game threw up and in and hit Neale. In the nightcap, the Yanks plunked Piggy, and the Dodgers hit Nix. All intentional or all coincidental?

San Jose--are you talking the Freudian definition of intentional or the baseball manager's definition of intentional?

Thanks for the reminder about Versalles. Somewhere in the deep recesses of my memory, I remember that name.

You had Versalles' baseball card, John. Back in 1962. In a previous life. I know you aren't THAT old. But as an avid Yankee fan, you have a distinguished pedigree. Ahhh, 1962. Won $15 betting on the Yankees with my schoolmates being all Giants fans. But I have waxed on about that before. Old guys tell the same stories, over and over. Bobby Richardson at second base, Whitey Ford mowing them down, and the Mick in centerfield. But, praise the Lord I have lived to see the Promised Land: Reid Brignac at shortstop, the mighty Vernon Wells in left field. Hang on, Gandolfini, I'm a comin' home with you . . . . Gonna see the Mick at the Pearly Gates.
