RIP Damaso Garcia

Another link to the Golden Age of Shitty Yankees Trades, gone.

"Garcia, who played for the Dominican national team, was signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1975 and first made it to the majors in 1978. He was traded in the 1979 offseason to Toronto along with Chris Chambliss and Paul Mirabella for Tom Underwood, Rick Cerone and Ted Wilborn."

Keep in mind that the Yankees were desperate for a starting catcher, a role Rick Cerone filled in 1980, and the Yankees had Willie Randolph at second base and the 1980 team won 103 games.

Yeah, it wasn't so bad a deal at the time. Cerone had a terrific first year, drove in a lot of runs, was very clutch. He led the league in throwing out 52 percent of all base stealers, and finished 7th in the MVP voting.

In the horrible George Brett game that ended the ALCS, I remember, the Yanks loaded the bases and he hit a ball on the screws—right at U.L. Washington, at shortstop.

Only trouble was, the next year he was doing "Guess" jeans commercials, and loving the nightlife. Bummer.

I also remember Damaso coming up in 1978, along with Domingo Ramos when the Yanks were desperate with injuries.

The great Roger Angell compared it to the English throwing schoolboys into the line to stop the Germans at Passchendaele.
