The first sports magazine I ever bought - (actually, my dad bought it for me) - was a black-and-white thing called "WHO'S BEST IN SPORTS?" It featured one-page profiles of star athletes, most of whom I'd never heard of. But one I already knew too well. The headline said, "DON'T LEAVE OUT AL KALINE," and, goddamm, they were right. Any list of great outfielders - Mickey, Willie, Roger, Bob Clemente, etc. - needed Kaline. (R.I.P., Mr. Tiger.)
These days, turns out that I have some time on my hands. Time to think about not just old Yankees, but the demons who haunted my childhood, adolescence, salad days and - damn - they can still hijack a drinking jag. They ruined months, years, of my life. The great ones.
On that note, I invite you to join me in drawing up the IT IS HIGH ALL-TIME YANKEE OPPONENT TEAM. For now, we need nominees. If we can make a list, I'll set up a poll, we can vote and - damn - it'll kill a few Groundhog Days of this quarantine. I feel like Trump and his wonder drug: Whattaya gotta lose? So... here are easy ones, pulled off the top of my head. I suggest we go beyond simply naming the greatest players of all-time, but limit this to the ones who particularly drew the most blood. Some suggestions...
c: Lance Parrish, Ivan Rodriguez, Carlton Fisk
1b:
2b: Joe Morgan, Roberto Alomar, Jose Altuve
ss: Cal Ripken, Rick Burleson
3b: George Brett, Brooks Robinson
lf: Manny Ramirez
cf: Johnny Damon
rf: Al Kaline Dwight Evans, Frank Robinson, Jose Bautista
dh: David Ortiz, Edgar Martinez
sp: (Pick 5) Pedro Martinez, Curt Schilling, Sandy Koufax, Frank Larry, Roy Halladay, Felix Hernandez, Teddy Higuera, Gerrit Cole
bullpen (Pick 3): Rich Garces (el Guapo)
closer:
All right, everybody... suggestions?

Definitely Miguel Cabrera at 1B. George Scott at 1B came to mind also. You can make a case for Howie Kendrick or Carlos Baerga at second base. Just getting started...Chuck Finley is an honorable mention...
Oh...Ken Griffey Jr. in CF...
Killebrew at first.
Randy Johnson should be on the list of pitchers as well as the list of biggest assholes, although that list might have been closed to new entries once they admitted Schilling and Pedro.
Boog Powell could be a candidate for 1B. Dick McCauliffe for 2B.
Kaline was a bit older when I stated watching so he wasn't nearly as scary to me as Frank Robinson, whose five or six great years with the Orioles ensured that the Yankees went nowhere.
But I'm showing my age. I'm not old enough to talk about our most harmful opponents from the '50s or earlier. But I hear that Jimmie Foxx may have kicked the Yankees around a few times.
This is great. Might I suggest that we remove the cheaters as they don't deserve the honors.
So no...
Jose Altuve
Manny Ramirez
David Ortiz
Outliers: Kevin Millar right? Or is it Keven Pilar? One of those guys kills us.
But here's my team...
1B Greg Bird - Big time Yankee killer. Still dealing with it. OK Killabrew then.
2B I would go with Joe Morgan but he didn't play enough against them so Frank White
3B George Brett
SS Alex Rodriguez
LF Yaz
RF Jim Edmonds
CF Griffey Jr.
DH Edgar Martinez (and it's not even close)
Pitcher
Cliff Lee - both on the field and for he trade not made
Justin Verlander (not Pedro we OWN Pedro. We are his daddy.)
Owner: Derek Jeter (You know why)
Doug K.
Just realized I picked ARod who is a cheater as well. Sorry.
Doug K.
I know I could be wrong but in my mind this list starts and stops w Edgar Martinez. I think he got a hit in every at bat I ever watched.
And I feel like Raindrops Kept Falling On My Head every time BJ Upton came to bat for TB.
And Tim Fucking Wakefield. It seemed like everybody had bad swings against him. Horrible, David-Justice-In-His-Twilight bad swings. I always wondered why the Yanks couldn't take some stalled AAA pitcher and stick him in a lab for a couple of years with a Niekro or two and create a soft tossin' Super Soldier.
Yes Tim Wakefield. X2 because he would screw them up the next day too.
Doug K.
Oh fuck every one of Wakefield's fingertips and twice on Sunday.
JIM RICE MURDERED US.
PAUL MOLITOR ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED US.
WE COULD NOT TOUCH TOM HENKE FOR AS MANY YEARS HE WAS CLOSING.
DOUG K!
YES, HOW COULD I FORGET, CLIFF LEE, AND KEN GRIFFEY JR.!
BOTH RUINED US!
I GOT ANOTHER CLOSER THAT MADE ME NUTS FOR A FEW YEARS.
WE COULDN'T TOUCH HIM WITH HIS CHANGE UP.
DOUG JONES.
KUDOS TO MR. DUQUE MENTIONING TEDDY HIGUERA.
COULDN'T TOUCH HIM.
NOT ONLY DID RICE KILL US IN FENWAY, BUT HE WOULD ALWAYS SEEM TO BANG ONE OFF THE MEZZANINE OR UPPER DECK IN LEFT FIELD, (NOT RF), IN YANKEE STADIUM. THAT'S POWER.
HE WAS LETHAL.
Fill in the missing blank at first base with Eddie Murray
Tim Wakefield? A Yankee killer? What a joke!
Just ask Aaron Boone about that one.
EDDIE MURRAY...
ABSOLUTELY!
YES...
HE WAS A BIG YANKEE KILLER.
RICHIE ALLEN IS RIGHT.
OTHER DIS-HONORABLE MENTION YANKEE KILLERS...
MIKE HARGROVE
MICHAEL BRANTLEY
YULI GURRIEL
Luis Tiant, as a pitcher, nice as it was to finally get him. Bill Lee—though Graig Nettles eventually took care of THAT problem.
Trot Nixon, in the outfield. Jacoby Ellsbury as both a Red Sock AND a Yankee.
Vlad Guerrero, who we SHOULD have signed. Chone Figgins, of all people. Brian Roberts—when he was still on the O's.
For a closer, how about Rollie Fingers? I don't remember us ever hitting him.
And why El Guapo? I remember us killing him.
Another possible closer would be Ugueth Urbano, especially in that 2003 World Series, but also with the Sox.
Since Killebrew spent most of his career at third base, I wouldn't choose him at that position. I'd go with Miguel Cabrera,Rafael(I never took steroids or boner pills) Palmiero and yes, Dick Stuart as he killed us as well.Stuart hit .380 against us , higher than against any other team. I'd add Jay Buhner at DH and Jody Reed as the utility guy that clobbered us in clutch at bats. Don't forget Kevin Youkilis. His OBP was unbelievable against us. Although pitchers plunking him so often and his walks added to the hits.
HOSS...YES ON ROLLIE FINGERS (COULDN'T TOUCH HIM). TROT NIXON GAVE US TOO MUCH ANGST TOO.
CARL...YES ON JAY BUHNER (GOOD ONE).
AS A KID, I REMEMBER FEELING SCARED, AND SAYING "OH NO, NOT THIS GUY", EVERY TIME FRANK ROBINSON CAME UP. HE KILLED US.
I don't remember Killebrew at third. He was always the giant at first in my memory.
But my memory is pretty shoddy these days.
