Hap tit to Leinstery.

If she can still sing, she should sing the national anthem on old timers day. I was a little disturbed when at the 2017 game, John Sterling and what's his name were announced by Bob Shepard. That voice from the dead should have gone with Jeter. Suzyn singing would steal a little from John.

Pride of the Yankees, female version!

I'll say! Great story.

I always liked Barfield, and was sorry he wasn't better in New York.

A great sportscaster who's never received the credit she deserves because she's a "girl."

This kind of glossed over the shit she put up with from fans. She received death threats to the point George hired her a security team. She received tons of hate mail which included things like used condoms.

So when I compared her to Jessica Mendoza I failed to emphasize that Suzyn went through a gauntlet of shit, and took the time to hone her craft to get where she is today. Jessica Mendoza got her job because ESPN wanted to distance themselves from Curt Schilling and his right wing twitter rants. So rather than just replace him with someone who could do a good job they sought to be "progressive". How putting a woman who doesn't have a clue what she's talking about on TV is progress, I'll never know. And all she has to put up with is people on twitter talking about watching the game on mute while people who don't watch baseball but want to see women in men's joba defend her. Therein lies my disdain for Jessica; Suzyn put in more work, put up with more shit, and still doesn't get the recognition she has earned. And Jessica screaming "OH MY GOD" every homerun in the derby really hammered it home.

And thanks for the nod duque.

I know you're talking about currently, but that's her from 30 years ago. Chances are her voice isn't quite that strong anymore, but she can probably still carry a tune. She had been singing since she was a girl so I don't think she would just stop doing something she loves.

And come on, John LOVES show tunes. I bet those two are performing duets on the plane rides as entertainment for the players.

Her pipes are a little aged, so let's not ask her to sing The Anthem. Way too hard. We need to start a petition for her to sing God Bless America. THAT she would nail.

I am so sick and tired of the dead behemoth Kate Smith. Yanks must use her voice because it's in the public domain. Every time Kate blasts that tune from beyond the grave, Hal adds a few more shiny dimes to his hoard.

This was revealing and moving. Thanks for the posting. I knew of her cancer, but not the ( predictable, I guess ) male bigotry and viciousness she endured.

She and john are, to us, the team to which IIHIIFIIC owes its roots.

That, and the insanity of our Cuban leader.

And the Dutch guy.

Agreed KD. Might not be the most popular take, but I hate "God Bless America". Part of that is because they have been playing it every single game since 9/11 and it has worn thin on me. The other part is Kate Smith sounds like crap. I thought that it was a man singing for 10 years and Kate was one of those old timey "Guy with a girl's name" situations. Every time Michael Kay says they'll keep it here, It's an automatic mute or flip to another channel.

A Suzyn rendition might change my outlook on that song. At least I'd enjoy the first season or two of it.

Oh dear, I just watched the Suzyn national anthem video... pause it at :56 and read the Jumbotron: "Suzyn Waldman, Broadway entertainer and life long Red Sox fan". I mean, well, I knew, but somehow thought she gave up on the sox before 1986. I remember 1986. I was the only Yankees fan in a third grade of Mets fans. The next year we had a mock primary election and everyone voted for Jesse Jackson, except me. I went for Dole. I miss the 80's.

No one remembers anything at 3 1/2 years old Suzyn.
