I thought Headley did a surprisingly good job for us last year, too. But he has a chronic bad back, which leads to long periods when he doesn't produce at bat or in the field—especially when he has to play third. Also, he was beginning to complain about not being used enough in the playoffs.
Even after getting rid of Cooper—thanks again, Mr. Ohtani—we still have Tyler Austin, Billy McKinney, and Mike Ford to back up Bird.
I was sad when I heard Mitchell was going. Then I realized I was sad because I read that he had one of the best spin rates on his pitches. Right. The fact is, he's a 26-year-old dropping steadily on our depth chart.
Yep, always a shame to give up pitching.
But...this opens up a spot for Andujar. This gives us money to wheel and deal next year. Isn't this a good thing?
Tyler Austin, if history holds, will last into about the 6th inning of the first game he plays. Then, he'll be on the DL for 6 weeks. Who says McKinney can play first? I never heard that one.
Mike Ford must be some old , fat guy who sells cars.
Didn't they just play McKinney at first in the vaunted Arizona Fall League? And I think Ford will be terrific, and Austin is fine as a fill-in.
Look, I just watched too many miserable Headley at-bats over the last three years to be sorry about this. I call the guy Steady State, because I've never seen anyone so able to go entire weeks with the exact same HR, RBI, and BA figures. It was almost uncanny.
And now he's taken to complaining? Oy. Hey, $40 mill or so, and he gave us a good half-season?
Why, you ask? Because at his base, he is like a crackhead and he gets a rush out of making deals for these guys. He thinks he's getting a bargain or, as Torre used to say "might get lightning in a bottle," or some such shit like that. He cannot sit still to save his life. Patience is hard to master, especially if you're a crackhead - or a shopping junkie - and Cash's true colors are coming out. Prepare to lost some more prospects in exchange for some once-good tires with most of the tread missing - who will then clog things up because they will be too big to bench. Then we get caught in the same situation we have been in for many years - too many tubs of lard trotting out to play. We have to play them because, hey, they are there, and now all the young guys have to stay in Scranton and eat corndogs and lose hope. Remember, for every retread we get, some young guy with hopes and dreams is sitting in his cell down in Scranton and crying into his hands all night, washing away the pine tar with his tears. The definition of insanity: repeating the same thing and expecting different results. 5 more years of Cashman. IT DOESN'T MATTER TO HAL, THOUGH, as he'll get his percentage in seats and swag. George was a fan and wanted to win. Hal just wants money and he'll get that. It's a good deal, being born into the Steinbrenner. Unless you're Hank, of course. Nobody wants to be Hank.
We need pitching. We actually have some pitching in the minors, but Cooperstown doesn't work that way, does he? EVERY MOVE IS BEING MADE around the luxury tax, with the next criteria being "can we sell more tickets with this move?"Is anybody thinking HOLISTICALLY about how to build a good team?
I was sad that I cut my cable TV the other day. Now, I'm content with it again. I'll listen to the master. If I really want to watch a game, I'll find a woman who has a TV, use the Yankees as an excuse, and hope to get laid in the bargain.
I hope they stay away from Machado - wait until he only costs money, not a boatload of prospects (you know the Os will attach a premium to any offer because it’s the Yankees). It would be more intriguing (maybe not good, but at least there’s more logic to it) to trade a lesser (but still depressingly good) group to Detroit fro Fullmer and Kinsler.
But maybe best of all is sign Sabathia or MAYBE Cobb, since they won’t cost anything (maybe a draft pick for the latter) and have Sheffield and/or Adams and/or some other guy in AAA come up as needed. There’s also talk they could go after Smardzia (sp?) in a salary exchange with SF, with the Giants taking Ellsbury, and other pieces possibly involved. Smardzia is sort of like Pineda: the numbers say he should be better than he is, but he does eat up innings and would be better than, say, Louie Cessa.
On a more important note, I just found out that one of our cats has inflammatory bowel disease. No redheads in leotards have been by with a supply of medications, but I haven’t given up hope one will show up soon.
But just the fact that every move IS being made around the luxury tax is what makes this highly unlikely.
I suspect all the "reports" that the Yankees are talking about Machado are being generated by the Orioles, to drive up the price.
Manny supposedly wants to play shortstop, which is a nonstarter. He also will get $20 mill, which will make it impossible to stay under the salary cap, unless we can give the Orioles Ellsbury. Which would almost be worth it, but what sense would that make for the Orioles?
No, I suspect we'll give Andujar a shot—particularly if T. Frazier wants two years. If he flops, we have the Big Toe and Wade as back-ups. Now—some pitching!
Ah, the blessed IBS Lady! I intend to leave some highly indigestible cookies by the fireplace, with the hope she will come down the chimney with her medicines...
Cashman, why even speak to Todd Frazier's agent? Frazier is a hot dog, lucky to bat .200 Why spend limited $$ on him when you need pitching? Like the man said, "TRUST ANDUJAR" . . . . And Duque, Big Toe is going to make it up to you this year, Mea Culpa for the pick-off @ 2B.

Truth is: Romine will be the back-up FB.

Time to bring up the prospects!
HOSS.....
DON'T SECOND GUESS YOUR CORRECT THOUGHT'S....
STEADY STATE SUCKS.
4 YEARS- $52 MILLION.
EVERY YEAR...
10 - 14 HOMERS...
60 RBI
CAN'T CONSISTENTLY THROW ACCURATELY TO FIRST BASE, (AND GETTING WORSE).
THAT PATENTED GROUND OUT TO 2ND BASE WITH THE GAME ON THE LINE MADE ME SICK MANY TIMES.
OH HAPPY DAY!!!
I can't tell if it's just Twitter rumors, but supposedly Cooperstown is in talks to get Machado. Why? Why Coops?

We're not finished with the moves...

In my dreams, at least...

HAHAHA!
13 BIT!....
GREAT PLAN!
I HOPE THE PLAN COMES THROUGH.
WHY PAY PROSPECTS FOR MACHADO WHEN WE CAN GET HIM FOR MONEY ONLY NEXT SEASON?
SAVE THE PROSPECTS.
TRUST ANDUJAR.
HOSS IS RIGHT.
GET MORE PITCHING WITH THE SAVINGS.
By the by: CBS reporting that Ohtani underwent platelet-enriched-plasma injections in October, for UCL damage.
I will say it again:
Dodged. A. Bullet.
WOW HOSS....
FIRST I HAVE HEARD ABOUT THAT.
THAT BORDERS ON SCANDALOUS BECAUSE NONE OF IT WAS MENTIONED BEFORE HE SIGNED.
ANGELS SHOULD BE ABLE TO RESCIND THE DEAL.
