Letters to the Editor: Growling in Greensboro

Greensboro News and Record
January 27, 2020
Dear Editors,

The Associated Press’ Tim Dahlberg must be a New York Yankees fan.
In his commentary (“Patriot fatigue: Super Bowl might actually be fun again”), he stated that the New England Patriots are “the New York Yankees of another era except, of course, the Yankees didn’t cheat.”
Seriously? What makes him make an unsubstantiated comment like that?
The famous (now infamous) “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” was a game-winning home run by New York Giants outfielder and third baseman Bobby Thomson off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca on Oct. 3, 1951, that won the National League pennant. It has now been well-documented that Bobby Thomson confessed on his deathbed that he hit that home run thanks to sign-stealing. Ironically, the Giants went on to lose the World Series to the New York Yankees. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the Yankees cheated as well.

I suspect that Mr. Dahlberg is just jealous and expressing proverbial sour grapes, realizing that, in this century, the New England Patriots have won three times as many Super Bowls as the New York Giants; the Boston Red Sox have won four times as many World Series as the New York Yankees;and even the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins have won one more NBA and NHL championship than the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, respectively.

Don't know 'bout you, Mr. Ertner, but I was around for most of the previous century - - and believe you could add up all the championships that ALL those MA. teams won in the 20th century, and still not equal the 26 the Yanks won in roughly 3/4 of that century. I've seen thousands of games, and if you want to see the game played right, you couldn't do better than to watch the '27 Yanks, the '61 Yanks, or the '98 Yanks.

If I were you, I'd be looking over my shoulder, if I had disrespected the Ghosts of Yankees Past....Boooooo to you, BooBoo.

Well, so much for gratitude.

The Yankees ran the Greensboro Bats Sally League team for 26 years, in 3 separate stints, when they won 3 of their 5 league titles and 5 of their 8 division titles. The Greensboro Nine has since been renamed the Grasshoppers (mascot: Guilford the Grasshopper, named after the county, how original)

Players the Yanks have run through The Gate City have included Luis Arroyo, Jim Bouton, Robbie Cano, Derek Jeter, Roberto Kelly, Mike Lowell, Nick Johnson, Don Mattingly, Otis Nixon, Pags, Fritz Peterson, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Mel Stottlemyre, Tom Tresh, Roy White, Domingo German, and The Great One.

But still they hate us.

Incidentally, just to set the record straight, Bobby Thomson never "confessed" on his deathbed or anywhere else to getting the sign for the pitch Branca threw him, he had hit the game-winning homer two days earlier off Branca IN EBBETS Field, the Giants' run production actually went DOWN after they started stealing signs, and there is no evidence that the Yankees cheated in any way, shape, or form in the 1951 World Series, which they won despite losing Mickey Mantle in the second game.
